Let's do this! Honor our fallen Brother, get a little time of the water crabbing and toast the evening celebrating Joel at one of his favorite spots on the coast...

I will be there with my girlfriend, her son, and my boy.
I cant kayak, but Cody wants to bring his and go out. Can someone mentor him? He has never gone out at HMB, and it can get dicey in fog. I would feel better knowing someone took responsibility for watching over him in my stead.
What fishing gear should he bring? I was thinking just sabiki rig for bait fish, and have a fun light tackle day between pulls? Any wind and his NuCanoe is very difficult to cover ground, so paddling out to the cans might not be wise.

Laura and I will try and make it. If we do, I'll drop off 5th wheel on Wed or Thurs, as the lot will be full. Even going that early will put me in the last few double spots. I will check on availability the weekend before. Either way I will report what the lot looks like. Last year, even with the closure, I didn't get a double spot on Thurs, had to get creative with a standard stall.

It might be a little late to try and get a berth for the weekend; but try, you might get lucky and get an 'End-Tie' spot.

When you pay the launch fee and/or berth, you can actually park overnight for free in the lot; including drycamping....

But it will be near impossible if you dont drop the boat in by Thursday evening and secure a spot in the lot.....

If you choose to launch on Saturday, be prepared for the LOOOOONG lines at the launch and an even harder time trying to park you car&trailer....

Glen, what about just anchoring inside the breakwall like many of those sailboats?  Can he do that and then ferry using a kayak?  I can also leave my yacht for Brian to use as a tender.

The sail boats are tied at permanent moorings, not anchored; anchors can walk along the bottom, and I don't think it's permitted....

Benzo, anyone is welcome to come as long as they know the precautions to take when going out on the ocean. It can get windy, out there, so we have to keep a lookout on the weather. Also, dress for immersion and have a radio. I've only crabbed a handful of times from a kayak and it was alone, I don't feel comfortable doing that anymore. But ya you should come out, it'll be a good time either way! And we can all learn from one another! I also have a ton of old bait I'm taking with me (freezer burned albacore tuna, and other carcasses)

Damn. Guess I would be stuck going back on the trailer after dropping the traps? I would hate to drift around oitside the harbor in the swell for 5 hours waiting for 1st light to start rock cod fishing. I am going to call tomorrow and see if I can get a slip or mooring but other harbors don't reserve them for guests.

I am no expert but I have done a lot of guided fishing trips out of HMB, with groups of all sizes - A forecasted 4-5ft. with enough spacing between the swell is practically a flat day OTW there.  The forecast for this weekend might kill my plans for the midnight run, but it's ON like Donkey Kong at first light!

A kayak is not required for the Chill N Chill!  I'll bring the leftover booze from my party, a large bottle of Jameson and a large bottle of Belvedere with mixers for both.  Will bring the small smoker and cook something to share.

Those are some nice sized long period swells. Hoping Sunday will look even better. What is the break water look like in those conditions?
Title: Re: Mooch Memorial Crab & Chill - Saturday Nov 5th, 2016
Post by: snapperhead on November 01, 2016, 04:35:44 AM
A large ground swell, even with a large period will man 2 things: the reef will be breaking and pots left for more than a few hours will either walk (if not weighted properly) or get sanded in. Crabbing will be slower in water 80 feet or less, as the current causes most crabs to dig in; burry themselves under the sand. I'm sure there will still be crabs harvested, but everyone needs to be safe. Another thing is watch out for power boaters, don't have extra rope floating on surface, and stay away from the reefs, as not every swell will break, giving you a false sense of security.

I hate to bring more attention to this, but waves are forecasted to be as large as 27 feet into late Friday night.  Check out the news from SF Gate.  Sounds like a surf launch would be mayhem.

Good point you bring up about big ground swell means slow crabbing.
I had the experience last season.
Who remember last year opener?
I guess may be not many people because I did not see anyone. Rudy and I went out to hmb, I only saw one other kayaker. Swell was huge and breaking on my lap, we could only get 2 crabs for 7 traps and spent 5-6 hours there.

Question:
From 40-80ft is still rocky and quite far from the harbor.
What is the area to get to "100ft sandy area" in HMB?

Good point you bring up about big ground swell means slow crabbing.
I had the experience last season.
Who remember last year opener?
I guess may be not many people because I did not see anyone. Rudy and I went out to hmb, I only saw one other kayaker. Swell was huge and breaking on my lap, we could only get 2 crabs for 7 traps and spent 5-6 hours there.

By the way, I'll see you guys there this Saturday.

The other yaker was me. I KILLED IT!

depth has some to do with bottom terrain, but only when you are close to shore, rockwall or a reef; with reef being the most important.

there is decent crabbing  areas in less than 50' of water, close to the harbor jaws....

good rule of thumb: if you get a rock crab, move the pot in the opposite direction of the shore, rockwall or a reef, until you no longer get Rockies... unless you like them....

Remember: Rock/Red Crabs and Dungies dont play together... so if youre getting Rockies in you pot, dungies will stay clear of them...

Stay away from the reef!  7-8 foot waves with a 15 sec period is going to break.

-Allen

8' by 15sec aint great, its doable; by exercise GOOD judgement while on the water! Don't turn your back to the swell or pull up the pot broadside to it....  When approaching your pot to retrieve it, come around it so you are facing the swell; this will reduce the risk of going for a swim....

Stay away from the reef to the right of the jaws when you exit it; that where you get the biggest rollers because of the shallow reef.

and please "DO NOT DROP ANY POTS IN THE BOATING LANE FROM THE JAWS TO THE GREEN CAN!" You just will piss of the PBers, risk getting losing your pot, get your line tangled in there props, AND have a bitch of a time trying to pull your pot with all the swells from the boaters (let alone all the obscene verbiage you will get and give kayakers a bad rap).

Let's have some fun and be safe out there!!!!

Yes, very doable well inside the reef.

WEATHER/WIND: Light to moderate offshore winds early morning, slacking off mid morning, before turning light+ out of the NW direction for the afternoon.

Below is the forecast. It has improved, but Laura and I will still be there for the chill part only, as its still not very good. Can't stress enough about checking out the map that G-Whiz posted; where not to set pots. Also about the having rope floating on the surface; this could disable a boat and it could easily end up on the rocks - with its occupants! Stay safe and happy crabbing for those that go for it.

Saturday
Variable winds 5 kt or less. Sunny. WSW swell 6 ft. Wind waves around 1 ft.

Checking swellinfo.com (surfing intel site) sez:

SURF FORECAST
AMPM
TODAY
8-10 ft   6-10 ft
SURF
Well overhead high W ground swell with occasional double overhead high sets.
CONDITIONS
Clean in the morning with ENE winds 5-10mph. Glassy conditions for the afternoon with the winds shifting SW less than 5mph.
WIND   SWELL

E 4mph   W

NW 4mph   W
8.2 ft @ 15sec

So even though it calls for "glassy" wind conditions later Saturday, the base swells are still coming in at "overhead height and occasional double-overhead."   :smt104

Anybody been out to Mavs? I'm thinking about going tomorrow, would mean making a pretty wide arc to get out there

Heads up, some quotes from Coastside today, anybody dropping traps there might consider moving away from the boat traffic

Quote
If you have decent electronics and kind of know where you're not supposed to go, today was a pretty nice day (minus the kayak s-show and the gnarly water by the jaws). If somebody didn't know HMB today, they could've gotten in some real trouble.

Quote
The boats and kayaks hanging out at the jaws and even dropping pots were irritating, a real safety issue. Would be nice if the Harbor Patrol would clear the morons out

Quote
I went out of HMB at 7 and it was ugly inside but as soon as you went maybe half mile outside the red can it was surprisingly nice. I was absolutely prepared to turn around if it wasn't safe. The kayakers and their buoys at the mouth of the harbor are quite "interesting" to say the least

Conditions at HMB (per the VHF radio - I cancelled) are dicey in the jaws, with fog, and a plethora of kayaks and their pots - not to mention the waves!

Probably interesting at the jaws, anybody got a GoPro that can post?

I'm thinking about coming over

In true "Mooch" fashion, this was a great chill! ocean conditions and crab participation was as expected.... but

we came to the conclusion that I brother Mooch was not able to help us in those areas, because he was attending his nieces wedding that same day.... which was totally understandable!

He'll be back real soon and our pots will be stuffed with the bounties from a calm ocean....

Here's a couple pics I got from our midnight launch. Came back next day and pots were empty except for a few rock crab which we are merrily. Crabs are the bonus. Hanging with the NCKA folks are what it's worth, great camrederie and food!

Thanks for putting this together , Glen. It was good seeing everyone and parking lot drinking.

I'll be there on Sat with pork belly skewers. Hoping to use someone's grill to finish them off but I'll try to bring my own smokey joe. Beers in the cooler and I'm going deep (for the ai guys that wanna go too!).

Will join you brother

Let's Roll!!!

I hope this wasn't meant as a foreshadow of what is going to happen....  :smt009      :smt005

Lots of truffle butter once you get past the mouf...  :smt005 (eww but you were surrounded by it if you were out there in that slop)
