My uncle, also on here (@wildernesshunter), said I needed a gaff. Along with other things I've been slowly stock piling and buying keeping amazon busy with work as well as the UPS and mail man  :smt003 . Searching and searching for a unique gaff online since I dont usually like having whatever everyone else has, i gave up and started to just build my own...with a reputable mentor by my side, thanks uncle brian  :smt006 . Found a pretty decent piece of madrone wood, and discovering that lingcod are sometimes blue, ( from tennessee and we dont have lingcod out in the mountains lol) I loved the colors! So, sanded down, charred, and spot sanded, then with the master paint and stain mixer uncle made a very close color I wanted. Currently all the way to the clear coating poly stage and it's coming along awesome for my liking!

Why not make a one of a kind gaff. It’s a great way to give it character & working w/ a mentor makes it a treasure indeed. ,,,,,,,

cool , always wanted to try that with a nice piece of driftwood , but wasnt sure if I`d have to soak it for a bit to get salt out of the wood or if that is a non issue, also not sure about the type of coating to use guess I could soak it in marine spar .

I used a hickory axe handle. I’m obviously pretty boring.

My first attempt at making one, just go for it! Either it turns out good or not, but you can learn both ways  :smt003 its definitely been fun for me and alot of patience.

always a worthwhile project!
I dig the color on the madrone, so cool!

I've had good luck with marine Spar Varnish on my gaffs. Seal it up well and it ought to float, a real bonus. I do multiple light coats, with sanding in between to get rid of the drips.

here's Mdoka_Matt showing off the gaff I made a few years ago. That thing has captured a lot of meat for the table!

Nice gaff.  Make sure it floats.  Hate to loose a beauty like that.
