I agree with Santa Cruz Diner, awesome food, even their pho is good.
In '01 a co-worker of mine introduced me to Pho, and being Vietnamese he took me under his wing to teach me all about good to great Pho.
So, how does one distinguish between good and great Pho?Well... Depends on the business, they all make it differently for starters. Some are also a little uncouth with their daily practices, so they do things like water down the broth to stretch it a bit further on busy days (or when they see whiteys like me). Others just don't have a great taste to start off with, usually a bit bland.

Some places have really salty broth that's usually a giveaway of the lesser quality places. Just look for lots of Vietnamese people... The good places are always packed at lunchtime.
Pho is one of my favorites, too. I eat it at least once a week, mandatory. Rare beef medallions.... mmmm!
If fishing at Coyote or Anderson Lakes the place to go for grub would be Famous Dave's in GilroyOoooooh.... Sounds like a good place! http://www.famousdaves.com/ I'll have to try that soon!
Famous Daves has a great rack of ribs and variety of BBQ sauces on each table so you can smother the H out of em. Its over by the new shopping center off 152, first right after you go over the overpass east bound 152. I like to hit Duarte's in Pescadero. I love their Alalaberry pie!
If your path takes you through San Mateo after a day of fishing,
Santa Ramen
or my all time favorite Mels Market on Noche Buena in Seaside. Mels has the bomb sandwiches, seriously, go there and try the philly cheese steak or the tri tip. I'm talking incredible!

YES! I go to Mal's for lunch on a weekly basis. The Bomber is excellent, as is the philly. They also have high grade meats, and other tasty treats.
If anybody in the Monterey area is looking for a burger, go to Phat Burger in Seaside. It's on Del Monte about a mile north of Embassy Suites. Convenient location for people heading out of town after fishing (Canyon del Rey exit then left on Del Monte and it's on the right). And if you go there for lunch on a friday, you'll probably see me...celebrating Phat Burger Phridays, a tradition I started at work!
OK I'm hungry now!
PHO HUA HIEP in pleasant hill CA on my way back from the bay or marine side ocean aways hits te spot

not tender enough for sporks huh?Good question. One of my favorite BBQ joints of all time is a hole-in-the-wall place just outside of Tulsa, OK in the bad part of town. The sign outside said "You need no teeth to eat our meat". Now, that was some tender fall-off-the bone BBQ goodness. No forks or sporks need there. That was over 15 years ago, and I'm still looking for a place like that around here.

If your path takes you through San Mateo after a day of fishing, try hitting Jack's Prime. Good hamburgers and the y serve beer. It is a new place opened a few months ago. GF and I have been there a few times, good food and sweet potatoe fries are awesome.
Sonoma Coast - Fort Ross
Whenever we come back form fishing or ab diving we love to stop at the marina in Bodega Bay and get their clam chowder at Spuds

BaitNBeer, can you give us your Grandma Betty's "secret" tartar sauce recipe? That stuff is the bomb...at least the original recipe was...haven't been there in awhile...... now I am hankering for some.
Me and my three girls about put them out of business one weekend. They had to go buy more potatoes
Chuck E turned me onto this East Bay gem:
Nayong Filipino food, 1796 Whipple, Union City.
Had sisig, kare kare, and bbq pork there yesterday, and all of them were delicious. Big portions.

One thing you can always do to spice it up a bit is ask for them to bring you some of the oil from the pot as flavoring. I cant spell it, but its pronounced something like Nuck Mao (nuch bao?)? Its usually brought over with green onions in a bowl, add a scoop of it to your soup.
The recipe is very simple, but requires a seasoning packet that my co-worker gets from his Mom :) But basics of it are ox tails, shank, roasted white or yellow onion, roasted ginger, and the seasoning packet he gives me with anise, clove, and what ever else is in there. Season it with chicken stock/broth and fish sauce. Toss in some rice noodles, thin sliced beef, green onions, sprouts, and a ton of Siracha. Yum....
If anyone is in Mountain View and wants to try my favorite place, for consistency, service and flavor, its Pho Vi Hoa on the Los Altos side of El Camino, kiddie corner to San Antonio shopping center.
Cheers :)
back to subject , since ive been doing monterey alot i stop in seaside at the valero gas station and get a sandwhich at subway ..lolDude if you want a sandwich on the way back from Monterey, hit the Buy Rite Market (on Casa Verde a block down from Del Monte) or Randys Sandwich shop (on 10th St north of el estero lake). Buy Rite is pretty damn good. For burgers, there's a place in Seaside called Phat Burger (on del monte north of Embassy suites). Or if you're coming back from Carmel, there's RG Burgers in the Crossroads mall @ Rio rd. Alright now I'm getting off track. And hungry wtf!
