Isn't that one of those very endangered, highly protected, on a brink of extinction fish?.. Hmmmm I forgot the name of it... I'll have to get back to you on that one. :smt003

Do you really not know what kind of fish that is? I know myself if I didn't know what the fish was it wouldn't end up in my sink , no fish is worth getting a ticket to me and no I don't know what kind of fish it is.

Doesn't look like a Pikeminnow to me it kind of looks more like a mackerel I caught out by the Farallon islands one time.

We need better pictures. You did a full-on AUTOPSY of your unidentified fish so it must've been easy to get better pictures. Where'd you catch it?
First fish that comes to mind is sablefish, but again, more pictures would be helpful.

But it does look like a sable fish even the meat color.

Mission impossible without better picture of some info on where it was caught. The facial markings make me think its a member mackerel family, a sablefish, or a hake.
Not to belabor the point, but the prudent and responsible plan would be to snap a few pictures for identification and then release it next time.

One thing to be cautious of & others, please correct me if I'm wrong, but transporting a fish in water like this could be construed as transport for transplant to another body of water/live sale; yes/no?
I'm all for the "in in doubt, CPR it". Way cheeper than a fine & loss of license.

Catching and retaining an unknown species, butchering it, and then asking for identification. Not the right order to do things.

Don't jump the gun now... I bought this fish from a guy who supply to restaurants. I was told this is a fish from the sea, not freshwatrer fish. I just want to verify that. That's all. Seeing that no one can ID this fish, I'm inclining to think this is not local to Northern Cal to say the least, and am in the process of asking for a more scientific name from the person. If I get that I will report back here, given the interest in this.

Sooo you bought a "mystery fish" from a guy and the guy didn't even tell you what it was? And you didn't ask him what you were buying? What did the "restaurant supplier" call it? The term "black cod" is often used in commercial fisheries for sablefish.

You bought a fish that you don't know what it is .... You take home and butcher it (without knowing what it is) ..... I can only guess it was processes/cooked/eaten? ...... And now you are asking for identification?

This community is made up of fisherman that respect our surroundings. When I see a pick of a fresh fish, still in the water, it is assumed a fresh catch (poss a bad assumption). Than an open question about identification. Than a half explanation about fish .....
Maybe I was a little quick on the draw, but you left a lot open for a very bad interpretation

come on now Bluestar, seriously? I saw this pic right after you posted and My first thought was "WTF? head and collar pic only for an ID?!!??" to not post the whole fish was rude on your part. I was very nice and didnt call you out right away, but others, having seen the lack of identifiable information and even waited a good entire before doing so, and you are bumhurt by this?? WE, as a group are respectful, myself not so much all the time, but as a group we are. you on the other hand failed to meet the minimum requirements for an identifiable picture and are now calling us childish!?!?!
Childish would be to put up a pic of half a head and 2 fins and expect a bunch of expert fishermen and fisheries biologists to play your game and then be upset we don't play by your rules.
next time you want an ID, lets have the whole fish so we can do things like count dorsal rays, position of anal or caudal fins, or even observe the general (even post-mortem) coloration, scale patterns and lateral line details. As a guy that ID's fish often, these are this things that matter to me. Mayes and Coons and Bird and 20 others here would agree that these are the details needed for positive identification.

Somehow this reminds me of the movie Gremlins, with the dad buying the Mogwai/Gizmo from the mysterious Asian merchant :smt044.
I'm still groovy with a sablefish ID, but certainly not 100%. Bluestar, I hope you come back because your story has me hooked!

Sablefish are GREAT eating. And I believe they catch them by trap, making by-catch minimal, so it's a good fish to buy in terms of sustainability. They're deep-dwellers, though, so catching with rod and reel is difficult/impossible.

Sable fish AKA black cod are commercially caught by long lining. They have a very high fat content
My father was asked by a friend to smoke some black cod that he brought back from Alaska. There is so much fat in the flesh that fish oil dripped to the bottom of the smoker, filledup the pan and spilled outside the smoker. The smoked cod finished up being about a third of its original size. The smoker clean up was long and smelly and my father promised to never smoke that stuff again

I was given some by my nephew early this year that he took part in catching long line as a deck hand.
It was so so imo...very slippery and cooked up kind of bland..
I thought by how white and soft it was that it was going to be VERY good-it was okay is all

Bluestar I hope you have thick skin haha, these guys are just giving you a hard time. But I still want to know what kind of fish it was--I love mystery fish. Next time you see the guy, ask him what it was because I need closure!
If I had to guess, I'd say it's a saltwater fish...maybe pacific whiting or sablefish...both harvested commercially in CA via a few different methods.

I contacted the expert investigators from NCIS. We reverse engineered this image and determined the type of bird it is.

If you go out of Moss Landing or Carmel, you can get to 800+ft within a few miles of shore. So I looked into it this year, and realized they are on the list of Federally-managed groundfish...which means they are bound to the same depth restrictions as RCG...which is 240ft here.

You can get the baby ones in <240 ft in the hole right out front of Moss.

Yeah, the depth restriction was kinda what I was referring to. Just like how petrale sole are lumped in with federal groundfish and you can't fish for them beyond the max depths described for rockfish.
