I bet this topic has been covered somewhere before, but I can't find the right post.

My friend is looking for an ocean-worthy tandem kayak that is shorter than most (those Hobie tandems are super long).  He wants one that is around 12 feet long to fit in garage better, and for better portability.  His kid is around 10 years.

I have a NuCanoe Frontier 12 which he and I paddle out, but it's fairly wide so our speed is sacrificed for stability.  The deck is super flat so it's great for hauling gear, and it has a transom for mounting a 2.5hp outboard if I wanted to later on.  I originally got it for duck hunting the bay, but have moved more into fishing/diving.  He wants something more streamlined, do you guys have any suggestions?  What's the latest state of the art?

Thanks in advance and looking forward to your suggestions!!!

This one is a little longer than he is looking for, but paddles really well. http://www.wildernesssystems.com/us/products?family%5B%5D=466&type%5B%5D=302  Really comfy seat.

Here are 3 more that are popular rentals and paddle well too. Still longer than 12'. http://www.perceptionkayaks.com Tribe Rambler Pescador

If he goes with a short kayak it will be slower. Most tandems will be wider , so the longer it is that faster it will be.

Great advice, thank you!!!  I will pass it along.

I love my Nucanoe Frontier 12 but yes it is short and therefore wide and therefore slooow.  But I love how I can spread out, jump in/out, stand up, and hold a ton of gear.

Short tandems are always going to paddle like barges because they have to carry so much width up front to accommodate the second paddler.  The OK Malibu Two's are plentiful and can often be found pretty cheap.

Cheers,
Brad
