Ages and sexes of other dogs in the house makes a difference here.

I'm a fan of female dogs. Close to zero chance of a stomach rub getting... awkward.

My only experience is that my female husky was a wanderer, and my basingi/ Italian greyhound male isn't, and that we had a lot of deer trespassing in the yard when our husky was with us (though she'd chase them off, even got one once) and now we rarely see deer close to the house with all the male dog pee everywhere.
Our female husky was also quite dominant which sometimes caused problems, and while our new guy is also kind of an Alpha he seems much more willing to fit in anywhere other packs will allow him.

For me it would be more about how the new dog works with whatever pack is already in place at your house. Most shelters will allow you to bring your existing dog in and see how they work out with the prospective adoptee. We tried this a couple times and it saved us a lot of hassle.

Get both male & female ones.  Keep the one that works for you and I will adopt the other  :smt003

on GSP`s dont know squat, I have had 7  mix breed dogs and 1 pure golden ret.  I prefer  females ,in fact I`m working with a  5 month old female Siberian/German Shepard/Aussie mix now and I have two other dogs as well ..so far so good

+1  I have a 13 yo Collie Aussie mix and a 3 yo Border Collie.  Both female.  No problems with either.

I have a female GSP.  Started to bird hunt when I retired and wanted a dog that was as comfortable around the house as out in the fields.  Great disposition and knows when to turn it on.  Since we have no plans to breed her, she has been spayed.  We chose a female because we wanted a smaller stature frame which she is 52 lbs full grown.  A friend of mine purchased a male sibling of her and they both have the same great disposition.  It's funny to see them together because they act so similar.  It's so important to buy from a reputable breeder and review the bloodlines of the dog and hip exams that most will have done if you are looking for a purebred.  If this is your first GSP they are high energy and be ready for some exercise because they need it.  Good luck.

Female dogs get along better with other dogs.  Don't have those male tendencies to fight. They also don't lift leg to pee on every thing

GSP are kinda notorious for showing aggression toward other dogs of the same sex but if you are bringing in a puppy that shouldn’t matter, it’s more of an issue in 5 years when you want another dog. You’re going to have your hands full with getting it to play nice in the petting zoo, gonna be a lot of work at first.

They are great dogs, but don’t ever expect to take a leak alone ever again. Dang things follow you everywhere. Snake training will be critical.

Female is going to be easier to carry out of the brush when she gets bit by a snake. Males like to mark everywhere if you don’t nip that shot early and often.

My vizsla will be 10 this summer and I’d been looking at GSP or another vizsla. Probably a female, just cuz they are lighter and I’m not getting any younger.

Had a female German shorthair for 15 years.  Even writing about her after she’s been gone for 20 years makes me cry. She was a wondered for sure, a ball chaser, a mad swimmer, and a fantastically fun dog. She was a little hard to train and keeping her out of the garbage when we weren’t home could be problematic.

The biggest ‘con’ I can think of was keeping her out of the water!!!   If she was on a boat she’d jump in. And if went out in the canoe we had in those days - and my wife on shore got distracted for a moment - the dog jumped in and headed out to catch me.  If she could see me she could get there.

These dogs are work but OMG they are fantastic companions and really fun to watch them do their thing.
