My 50th is coming up and my wife is asking what I want.  Other kayak...noooo storage, to pricey, resigned to paddle...but...debating entering the gopro scene.  Not too tech savvy but can learn.  Need new computer to handle to editing, expensive hobby?  I love the vids fellow fisherman post here and learn so much.  How's the learning curve and what is the basic investment for storage and unit, time commitement? :smt006

Depends on what you want. You can use your iPhone and a low end computer with a stock editing program like iMovie. Or you can get a new $2-3k MacBook Pro with FCPX for like $800.

It’s whatever you want to do. I know that’s probably not very helpful, sorry. The time investment can be pretty large. Getting the shot on your camera that you want with little excess video cuts it down immensely. Editing 10-30 minute clips is annoying and time consuming. If you just want to splice video together you don’t need much as far as programs. If you want to adjust colors with Fancy animations you’ll need more.

Gopros shoot in higher quality than the majority of computers can even handle FYI.

You can even get the prior Gopro versions if you wanted to just give it a try to see if it's something that you might enjoy. I use to have 3 gopros and now have only 1 working one -- time to get more.

Sometimes, I think I go out just to get some fishporn footage (gives you an idea of how fun I think it is -- great way to capture fishing moments and relive them whenever you want).   :smt001

I use camtasia to edit, but any other video editor will do and your current computer, if it's fairly new, will be able to handle the editing.

Ok, thanks...I think I need to learn how to convert some Imovie stuff for this format.  I just want to post a few clips of good stuff, at least some moments of live fishing fun.  I'll keep studying what I want from a go pro system or editing live clips at all...stay tuned...

A lot of the land videos I do are recorded with a simple Nikon Cool Pics point and shoot camera.
I download the SD card onto the computer and use MAGIX movie editor that cost around $60.
Fun to play with if you have the time. Take a ton of pics and vids and put them together how you want. That's it.
Then start to play with special effects.
No need to go high end to make really cool videos.

I do have cameras that make movies so I may just have to get a better laptop and mess around.  My macbook is ancient.  I may be looking for your simple solution.

This.

Being committed to capturing scenes, posting them up, taking criticism along with the strokes and using the process to improve the next attempt not only helps you hone your video game - it potentially changes your entire life.

The quality and style of your videos isn’t anything compared to your content.  I aspire to be more high tech and polished at some point, but the experiences I’m having are more important than glitz.

I consider a commitment to sharing your outdoors pursuits on video to be integral to developing your best game.

Yes, you are reminding me why video has an effect for a visual type like me to learn and refine skills.  Similar to reviewing anything of interest until you recognize that nugget that you didn't know you were looking for. :smt006

If I have to do it all over, I would use my phone as my primary video recorder.  Aside from that, I have the Yi 4K (https://www.amazon.com/YI-Action-Sports-Camera-Control/dp/B01FU9ZIMU).

2019 Hobie Outback
2017 Hobie Adventure Island
2016 Santa Cruz Raptor G2 - Surf/stability champ!
2015 Hobie Revolution 16 - Speedster
2016 NuCanoe Frontier 12 - Extra stable with crazy load capability

Just be aware that using your phone is dependent on how much storage you have there.  But then again, you dont need to record in 4k and most phones allow additional storage.
