This is what I'm talking about, small stream coastals, learn to read the gauges, by the time you hear a report the fish are gone...

Yeah buddy! Small Winter coastals is all about being ready at a moments notice. Definitely want to get up into Oregon some this year.
Here's the fall and spring shorts that go with the winter I posted.

I plan on spending a week up on the So. Ore coast around Feb if it's not blown out the whole winter because of El Nino. Last year was tough for me up there but the year before was epic. Hopefully there will be enough water to fish the real small stuff which I haven't been able to do in a few years.
-
Nice. Keep in touch, I plan on spending as many fishable days as I can on the river this year. I made the switch from gear a few years ago and these winter fish are a tough nut to crack compared to the fall fish in the rogue, trinity and Klamath. Need lots of river time.
-
I'll let you know when I go, usually short notice, probably drop the raft in the SF Eel a few times.
I try to nymph a few up before I switch over to swinging. Smaller streams usually more nymphing. Nothing harder than to swing up a winter steelhead and for me nothing more rewarding.

Those are some incredible videos! Thanks for sharing guys.
Might as well bookmark it now...will be checking it on a weekly basis: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ca/nwis/current/?type=flow

Hey! Rockroach, it's your buddy from the Trin, LOL. Fished with Jason about 5 years ago, he's good a good dude. A couple of my inner circle of steelheaders who chase steel with spey rods fish with him every winter. I usually drive by him at least once in the fall on the klam or trin.
-
I went with him a few times, on the advice of rockroac on this very forum, and I went from total noob hack to semi competent gumby on the Spey. I'm hoping this year I get enough river time to reach full gumby.

I'm getting Steelhead fever. Hope the Chetco and Smith get rain this year!
-
Smith and Chetco are getting right now, I might head up there tomorrow afternoon or thurs morning see if I can get a late season salmon.
-
I really hope I can swing a winter steelhead trip or two this season. It's damn hard to time it correctly when one lives 5 hours from the coast! The Trinity was mostly a bust for me this year. Just small ones. It's been a long time since I hooked into a DD steel, and that needs to be remedied. I'm thinking SF Eel or the Duzen. Bring on the rains!

Add me to the speed dial list! Haven't been to the coast for several winters.

It would be a pleasure to fish with you both! Winter steel are amazing. I love that immediate switch when you're out there freezing your ass off for hours, then you get a bite, hook up, and immediately you're all warm as the adrenaline rushes and you watch 30+ inches of chrome erupt out of the water. Steelhead have handed my ass to me on more than one occasion :smt044.

Nice! Don't see alot of pinners down here in Cal. Were you down here or further north?
I'd say this fall was just OK for me, labor day weekend on the Trinity was awesome with 11 fresh adults landed but other trips to upper klam and rogue were only average.

The windows can be tight depending on how wet the winter is, but you should definitely head over with the yak. There's almost always one two week window during the season window everything aligns.
