Registration is now CLOSED!
We WILL have a new kayak as part of the raffle. Our own RacinRob has confirmed a Wilderness Systems boat again - thank you, Rob!! Each participant gets an entry toward the Grand Prize kayak.
The gear will have purple ink, and this year we'll have zip hoodies instead of pullovers. The raffle will benefit PIF and HOW, and most of the other Gimme Shelter traditions are part of this year's plan as usual. We'll have Gyotaku fish printing where kids 15 and under will print for free and possibly win a cash prize. We'll have a potluck and raffle awards ceremony at the campground pavilion as it's been the last few years, and KayakJack and his volunteer army will bring back the awesome Taco Shack. We'll have a safety meeting down at the ramp where my laptop might fly or my vehicle may instantly become disabled! We'll have a fishing tournament where I've added a species - starry flounder, just to keep it interesting. We'll hopefully have great diving and pre-fishing water and beautiful sunny days to enjoy the Lost Coast and each other in the world class setting of Shelter Cove.
I've added to the application and qualification sheet, and I appreciate everyone being patient about complying with what still amount to very basic paperwork requirements.
Registration fees have remained unchanged since GS4. Shirt prices are the same as last year, but I'm only offering a zip hoodie this year - they're more pricey at $50. They'll be cool. Also, I learned from the hat production last year. The hats will be high quality and are $25.
The bottom line for this event is celebrating the NCKA community. Prizes and commercialism have been identified as secondary priorities. I plan to make the event everything that it's been leading up to this point, and my goal is always to enjoy it immensely at the same time. I look forward to spending time with my NCKA family. :smt001
Discussion can continue at whatever pace is desired. I'll likely get revved up now and then over the coming months and do some pic dumps and video archive revivals of past GS's and Shelter Cove stuff from over the years. Please feel free to do the same.
Part of what has become my GS Scheme is to tone down the buildup, and that way hopefully only those who really want some GS will be the ones to attend.
Thanks - please post questions on this thread, and I'll keep it checked and updated.
Probably won't maintain an updated roster this year, so be sure to get in touch with me if you don't get a welcome email. Anyone ever not gotten a welcome email? Check your junk mail folder, Disney! :smt005
I will post the roster soon.

Thanks Eric,
I can hardly wait for May
Verna will block out the date and start contacting those who have already reserved rooms in the next few weeks. We will also post up if any rooms are still available.
Also,
Verna would like to remind everyone that she manages a vacation home just up the road that is also available during the event.
Thanks again for all the work and dedication put into making this the premier event of the year.
Let me know if you need any help with anything

Advisory: it could change if DFW changes things up regarding rockfish/lingcod opener. This is 99% solid though...
This is likely. Mendocino management area proposal to move the opener to May 1 is one of the topics for discussion at the fish and game commission meeting this week in Eureka.

Good info, Doug - thx.
I think I'd leave the event at 5/20/17 even if the opener moves up.
BTW, Mother's Day will be 5/14/17. :smt001

You're saying keep it on the 20th, is that because of the Mother's Day conflict or is it because that early in May the weather and swell to unpredictable?
-
3. Allow for the take of all species with no depth restrictions
November 1 through December 31 in the Northern and
Mendocino Management Areas;
Can't wait , gonna make sure to make it back this year!
Also like this one area of change, this could open up some crazy big fish in the later part of the year!

Would somebody take over my "count down" job? :smt003

It's because I'd like to keep it simple and consistent with past events, and the rockfish/lingcod opener isn't even as big of a deal as maybe it used to be.
It did occur to me though that I like the weather patterns of mid May - even compared to early May.

Any update on the Hoodie color? Great to see a zip one offered.
Thanks Eric, For all you do to make GS great!
Martin
-
Any update on the Hoodie color? Great to see a zip one offered.
Martin - I've always liked light gray zip ups... I'm open to suggestions, and I may be able to offer color choices for the zip up hoodies - like black, gray or tan...
With the zipper I'll be changing the art for the front - my thought is to have the NCKA "linghead vector" in a smaller size at the chest pocket location.
I was considering dropping the NCKA linghead vector because I've printed at least a couple thousand pieces with it over the past 6 years, but I will be keeping it.
The back of the shirts and hoods may just have the "yakker image" with a small GS11 reverse printed on the hull of the yak.
Simplicity - I'm feelin' it. :smt001
-
Gray or Tan would be cool Eric !!
-
I like grey too and the location and choice for the graphics sounds great to me.

SPONSOR NEEDED!
Hi All, I'm fairly new to kayak fishing: Went on a guided trip with LoletaEric last June out of Trinidad, fished a couple of times out of Caspar Beach, Brookings, Bolinas, Timber Cove, and have made a few trips to Tomales Bay crabbing. Looking forward to participating in GS11; however, I'm in need of a sponsor.
As to my level of rowdiness, let me just say that I'm a retired CPA.
If you are interested in sponsoring me, send me an email and I will be happy to provide more information.
Best,
Ben

So far so good. Looks like besides attending GS11 I might be coming up early to experience different parts of that area. Hope to hook up with 4est for some enlightenment of different parts of that area. Hope to take my time and really soak it up. :smt007. Maybe spend about 4 extra days before the Great Event !!!

Last year mybuddy and I decided to bring our waders and perch gear to kill time. Took us a couple of moves south of the launch area till we found them. It was a blast to catch and eat them later for dinner. :smt003
-
It might be already too late but I have be considering attending for a while. I attended Albion a couple of times, MBK, SC but not yet GS. I guess I will also need a sponsor, anyone?
-
Scratching 'em in. The Forties are coming along...
Those of you looking for sponsors - take your time. You'll get hooked up. :smt001
Chinclan - I recommend you reconsider staying in Benbow. Staying at Shelter Cove allows for getting much more out of the event.
Roster is coming together. Be sure to setup your accommodations.

Salmon trips again this year on Thursday and Friday mornings - 630AM to 11AM.
I'll review the layout of the reef and where salmon are caught at the Cove, trolling methods, mooching, and specific bait techniques - then we'll go fishing! Last year was a tough one for salmon - I was stoked when one of my Friday guests got a legal king.
I have four spots on Thursday, and Friday is full. $50 per participant.

Nice ! Sure these spots will fill quickly. Hope you have some Great Luck before the event !!

Our campsite confirmation arrived in the mail today. My lovely wife took care of the reservations, so I guess we'll be there this year!
We arrive on the 17th. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the Cove.

I had a good run attending GS-6 through GSX, but looks like I'll be missing out on GS-11. I have a mandatory work training the week of May 22 in Springfield OR. Dang! Hope you guys have calm seas and sunny skies this year!

It's 272nm from Newport to Shelter Cove. You have enough time to get an airplane and a license to fly it. I'm sure we can come up with a loaner kayak for you. No excuses.

I'll have someone change their last name and be my teammate I guess....

Maybe you'll reconsider doing a marathon run just for tourney day... :smt001

We are going to all miss you this year. With the addition of the Starry Flounder and your flat fish fishing skills this could of been your year.

So, my strategy of not really promoting GS11 is working... Maybe it's working too well. I intend to keep the event from getting out of control, but I didn't mean to scare anyone off.
However it turns out is fine. Just wanted to reassure that I am setting things up as usual - just not promoting much. I will turn up the volume soon though.
Thx,
Eric
:smt001
-
I really don't think you need to promote it at all. All it takes is for a person to experience a GS event and they're hooked for life. I haven't missed one since GS 7 and it's always on my vacation list request from work.

Thanks, Herb. I do realize that with quite a few more annual events on the calendar these days people aren't as apt to sign up early for any given tourney.
6.5 weeks until end of signups...

I know plenty of people who are planning to attend. They are all just procrastinating on registering until the last minute like I am because we're all morons

Ah yes, the quiz... Don't worry too much about it. Quite a few people are getting a detail or two wrong, but my main intent is just to get people thinking.

Hey all! :smt006
I humbly request a sponsor. I have never been to a GS event. I have been to several Simply Fishing events but still do not know a lot of you. So real quick here is a little about me to help you decide if you will sponsor me: 3 years ocean kayak fishing experience, Army Gulf war veteran, Humboldt State University grad, mild mannered family man, and I fish out of an Ocean Kayak Trident 13. If any of you wish to get to know me and sponsor me I would greatly appreciate. Oh, and I'm not entering the contest to win prizes, but instead I just love to fish and wish to get to know more people like me. Thanks

GEAR UPDATE:
I sat with my new gear people today. My old suppliers who produced all gear from GS4 through GSX are moving to Portland soon, so I had to go shopping. I feel lucky to have landed with a local outfit that is really on the ball: Lotus Mountain Screen Printing out of Fortuna.
I have finalized my design - in keeping with my recent tradition, it's full on SIMPLE! Purple is the color, so the standard issue short sleeve t-shirt will have the NCKA "Linghead Vector" on the front in purple, and the back will just have the "yakker image" in purple - no words. I've chosen a softer, upgraded t-shirt. The hat will be black (Flex Fit) with just the yakker in purple. The zip hoodie will be heavy duty and charcoal in color with the Linghead Vector on the left chest and the yakker on the back - both in purple. The long sleeve options: black will have purple just like the short sleeve shirts, and white will have black Linghead Vector and purple with black outline yakker on back. The Gyotaku shirts will have a small purple yakker on the front left chest and a small "Gimme Shelter Gyotaku" and Asian characters on the back, with plenty of room for printing - should have kids' sizes this year too.
I'll post up the mockups when I get them from my people.
The gear's going to be awesome. :smt001
-
Simplicity. :smt001

Long sleeves too...

Hi everyone,
I'm pretty new to the Ocean Kayak scene and this tournament sounds like a good (and fun) way to gain some more experience. I purchased a Hobie Outback this winter and I've had it out in the ocean 3 times since. Once was for the NCKA Crabfest at Doran which was a blast! Although I'm fairly green in the water and have little rockfishing experience, I'm very aware of safety issues. My rig is properly equipped and I'm very comfortable in it. With that being said, what are the chances of gaining a sponsor for this event? I've reserved a campsite and I'm looking forward to just hanging out and sponging knowledge off those who are willing to share, (and those who like 18 year old rum).
I'm housebroken too.

I have never fished GSX, this will hopefully be my first time but i am no novice to the cove. Trying to tap the collective here and see if anyone will sponsor me and my buddy Stacy, as rules state we need to be sponsored.
I promise not to tarnish your name and will catch the littlest fish in the pond.
Help me out, please... ( I am not above whiskey bribes for your service :) )
Thanks all,

I am requesting a sponsor as well to attend this years event. I will being camping with Schills206 (Mr Rum). I myself prefer a smooth tequila from Mexico. I have never attended an actual NorCal Kayak event yet but I have enjoyed Crabbing and fishing with my Hobie Outback mainly in the Bodega bay area. I have about 2 years experience so far and I'm adequately equipped for this trip regarding safety.
This event looks like a lot of fun...
I am 50, Navy Veteran and I enjoy Fishing. Looking forward to some good rum and Tequila after a fun day of fishing and meeting new friends!

I welcome and appreciate the banter - you may want to actually register for the event! :smt005
Just a note for the newcomers - this isn't a "dry event", but please keep the drinking and other partying on a level that is respectful of families and those who are not partaking in your chosen inebriant. Do whatever you like in your own camp or accommodations.
Also, smoking isn't welcome at the safety meeting, the scoring table or the potluck.
Thanks. :smt001

Thanks for the reminder Eric. This is in line with keeping your goal of making GS a family event.

Thank you, Raydon - I appreciated you reminding me of the smoking issue. :smt001 I should have added - no smoking at the Gyotaku printing event.
Camping: I've discussed it with the owner, Jack, and he is setting up the usual group area where registered tournament participants can camp anywhere they'd like for a per person, per night charge. I didn't ask him what the charge will be this year - I think it was $22 per night last year. Don't be surprised if it's gone up. Jack has been trying to sell the campground, and economic times aren't easy at the Cove. He always gives us ample space and treats our group very well.
So the options at the campground are: 1) pay the group area charge per night; or 2) rent your own spot - either individual or RV with hookups.
Everyone pays their share - freeloaders will not be tolerated.
Many people stay at inns, hotels or vacation rentals. It can be tough to camp out and do early mornings/long days of fishing and sunshine.
Last note: if you have a question about camping or anything else about the event weekend be sure to post it in this thread so everyone can benefit from that discussion (and I can avoid potentially answering the same question for a bunch of people on PM's :smt001 ).
It's a community gig - be part of the community.

Alex,
Thanks for the sponsorship!
We have a long history us squids hanging with marines... you guys do a fine job of kicking ass ashore but most can't stomach the waves getting to there destination. We have been known to carry a few marines home from the bars trying to keep up with us!
Looking forward to fishing with a brother in arms 👊🏻
:smt003
Look forward to it. Was an experience floating across the equator on a ship on the way to the island of Diego Garcia from Korea with my Navy Brother's. They kept us in a hell hole at the bottom of the ship. :smt005 . Pull the chain and get wet, lather, pull the chain and get out. The fastest showers I have ever taken and the worst ever boat ( ship ) ride :smt044 .
You guys got showers? That's cute

Hey potential sponsors -
My brother (delo50) and I are looking for a sponsor in order to attend GS11 this year. We started kayak fishing a couple years ago, and attended TRW last year (you know, the one with house-sized rollers all day long). We have all safety and immersion gear, lots of fishing experience and have boat-fished Shelter Cover 40+ times over the past decade. I'm 33 and he's 29, from Chico, and are both easy going - just looking to have a good time at the Cove with like-minded friends. Thanks for your consideration and please let me know if you have any questions that may help us get a sponsorship.
Greg (G-Force)

Great intro Greg. I'm positive somebody will sponsor you.

On Gimme Shelter... Here's a post I put up in the GS5 thread.
December 28, 2010:
"...early this century, a group of hearty, fun-loving, tough, individualistic yet uniquely fraternal kayakfisherman created what would become a tradition along Northern California's Lost Coast. They called it Gimme Shelter, a name with many meanings including, of course, the obvious - 'get me to Shelter Cove for some of the west coast's best fishing!' - but also it came to mean 'I want in on a gathering that, through camaraderie, competition, sportsmanship, adventure, and, just pure passion for life and the outdoors, can provide shelter to any of us in our hectic lives.' The spirit of this gathering was created by the founders. It was Abking, Swellrider, MBYakker, Sailfish, Sin Coast and sackyak. It was an NCKA hookup with a focus on salmon in early March of 2007. No fish were caught that weekend, but the group bonded on the water in tough conditions, and the adventures continued along shore and in the camp. The next year around the same time a thread popped up for Gimme Shelter II - it was planned as a great hookup like so many other NCKA events and chills, but, even after much hype and a mini-epic lead-up thread of its own, it was cancelled due to hurricane-like weather. A few dozen people were disappointed, but enthusiasm for the event's future was not altered. The next year, 2009, the GS3 thread came alive - a few years of shortened rockfish seasons had led to a new phenomenon - people were so anxious to start the new rockfish and lingcod season with a bang after a long winter of deprivation that the idea of meeting along one of California's most remote and productive coastlines became an obsession! The thread took on a life of its own and it was apparent that the Gimme Shelter series had formed. That year we were lucky enough to have great conditions and we had an informal tournament, but, honestly, it was much more than just a fishing competition. There was talk of putting 10 or 20 bucks into an MBF - that's 'Money Between Friends' - type of competition, and, tournee or not, people were glad to be there. Having received some generous prize donations, the call was made to make it a free tournee. Anyone who competed could bring either their fish or a good photo of it to the potluck at The Tides Inn - because we'd filled that fine, ocean-front establishment - and enter it for a chance at a prize. Overall length of longest fish was the determining factor for the prizes that year, and we had some wonderful surprises. With no salmon season, the anticipated winning fish would be a lingcod, but some special things happened that year. First, on pre-fish day, Friday, Domenic caught a beautiful Pacific Halibut!!! 39" and 25 pounds, and a PACIFIC HALIBUT!!! Everyone was stoked, and it made anticipation of the next day's tournee that much better. Tournee time came - we had around 55 competitors I think. There were so many nice fish caught, and the numbers were ridiculous! I'd say the 50-something of us caught and/or released a thousand or more fish that weekend!!! The tournee title went to Jedmo with a 56" Wolf Eel - that was a shock and so cool. 34 and 32 inch lings made up the balance of the top three, and I think all the other fish that placed were lingcod, with quite a few over 30" caught for the weekend. The tournament and potluck that followed were everything that we know that great NCKA events are, and the rest of the weekend, with ab diving, spearfishing, beach discovery, checking out the Lost Coast and surrounding 4000' ridge, was awesome - so many happy people having such a great time! It had to be followed up, there was no option! Early in 2010 the GS4 thread started up. This year would be different - there was pre-registration, t-shirts, a $1000 yak for a grand prize, other prizes! This had become a bonafide tournament! Another bonus of GS4 was that we had a salmon season!! We had high hopes of many salmon being caught, but only a couple shakers were caught during tournee time, and a beautiful 14 pounder was caught by Bird during Friday's pre-fish. We had 85 paid competitors and went with AOTD format - that's Angler Of The Day, and it uses AOTY rules for the most part. Big Jim won the new OK Trident Fishing yak, and so many people were in awe of how that all went down - Jim's demeanor was nothing short of ideal in terms of humility and grace, and the prevailing feeling was that he deserved it more than anyone! The tournee, potluck, prizes, winner(!), diving, gatherings, uni, family time, and all the rest of what was GS4 were totally awesome. When the dust settled and all the "Sledgers" had cleared out, NCKA had put its mark on not just Shelter Cove, but really we had created a dream.
Now it's time for GS5. It's time to live the dream again."
****************************************************************************
GS11 is coming together - the tradition continues. :smt001
Since GS4 I've handed out between 30 and 40 ten inch abs as trophies. I'd come to realize that many of these beautiful shells were rotting on my fence, so over the years I've been cleaning up the ones that are still solid and giving them away. I'm glad to have others take possession of what are icons from my past, and new tens that I find usually go in the GS mix as well.
(http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx65/Eric_Stockwell/DSCF5133_zpsmjgphfex.jpg) (http://s742.photobucket.com/user/Eric_Stockwell/media/DSCF5133_zpsmjgphfex.jpg.html)
Along with the ceramic ab tags I have built funky little mini-troughs as trophies too. They're fun to make and fun to hand out. Fun is a central theme of GS.
(http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx65/Eric_Stockwell/DSCF5132_zpsbkttvtn5.jpg) (http://s742.photobucket.com/user/Eric_Stockwell/media/DSCF5132_zpsbkttvtn5.jpg.html)
I think it was GS5 that brought about the oldgrowth redwood Trophy Troughs. Jim Meier/Rockfish brought in a beautiful lingcod that he was calling 38" (maybe it was 37.5", but you know how fish stories go... :smt005 ). I put it on a Hawg Trough with the Hawg Trough Extension, and I thought I was so right in correcting him - this ling's not as long as you're claiming! He was firm. I was incredulous... Then I realized my HT Extension was reamed out and stretched, effectively stealing a half inch from every large fish measured!! Oh damn! I knew right then and there that I needed to build some big troughs... The Trophy Trough was born as a concept, and now I've built maybe 15 or so of them. Several of those have been handed out as prizes for the AOTD, a few have been raffled off, and I retain a few for measuring GS fish and other catches during the year.
Here are this year's twin forties - one for AOTD, one for the raffle:
(http://i742.photobucket.com/albums/xx65/Eric_Stockwell/DSCF5136_zpsdfd0zxfe.jpg) (http://s742.photobucket.com/user/Eric_Stockwell/media/DSCF5136_zpsdfd0zxfe.jpg.html)
So, this is how GS works. It's not about winning a kayak or prize money - BTDT. It's about a community gathering where families are encouraged to participate, kids are given opportunities to discover the sport, friends are able to get together and strengthen their bonds, new relationships are forged, the beauty of nature and the fish is celebrated, and the true meaning of camaraderie plays out all around us.
If this looks and sounds good to you, I look forward to seeing you at the Cove. :smt001

Ha ha ha ha yeah man cant wait Jim!!!
Ana and the girls will be with me. I'm sure the girls are gonna dig hanging out with Zack, and Ana will dig seeing Tiff again...been a long time!!

Jim

Ill sponsor you guys if you help us out by washing dishes for the fishtacoshack on Saturday night. It only takes like half hour and I will throw in a cool tacoshack hat and all the fish tacos you can eat

The way I understand it is if you don't have a NCKA sponsor, you can't participate in the fishing competition. Correct me if I'm wrong, Eric.

Correct Howard,
No sponsorship means you are not in the official event.
BUT,
Everyone is welcome to hang out or fish during the same time, just bring some good juju and be in control of yourself and your group.

Aaron - You're all set - I received a message from your sponsor this evening. You would have gotten a bunch of other offers along with that one. The sponsorship system has worked out so well because just knowing that there is some expectation of accountability for behavior, there have not been any problems for years. I shouldn't give up the goods like that, but I'm proud that our group has been really mellow and respectful as a priority.
Thank you, bro, for wanting to come to the event. Even if someone can't get a sponsor and they want to come to the event, they are totally welcome. That would be strange though, because all you need in order to get a sponsor is some openness, willingness to express your need, and some experience on the salt on a kayak. It flows from there.
Welcome to Gimme Shelter. :smt001

Thx, X. Lack of a steelhead season and the ocean being muddy and rough for the better part of the last 3 months had me not putting up a video since early January. Gotta keep the feed alive! :smt001
Hopefully I'll get something a little more exciting to post up soon.

New to the group and wondering if I have to have a dry suit or will a wetsuit like 5 mil thick and booties qualify as cold water ready. I prefer that over a dry suit
-
Wetsuit is fine, Cory. "Dress for immersion" means be ready to go in and stay in for a while. Drysuit without good thermal under it is a liability in terms of hypothermia.
See you at the Cove. :smt001
-
Awesome thanks Eric.
Really appreciate all this group had to offer and look forward to meeting you

The hoods should be darker than this - "charcoal" - hopefully I'll get another mockup.

Registration sent, always a good time at GS! This will be my 5th time, time sure does fly.

It's all but certain that salmon WILL be open for GS11!
I have spots open for my Thursday half day salmon trip...
Also, I heard the other night at my Humboldt Area Saltwater Anglers meeting that Pacific halibut may be open May 1st through June 15th to start the season before going to only the first parts of the months of July, August...etc. until the quota is met.
If this is true it'll be really cool. For about 4 years running (GS3 though GS6?) there was at least one Pac hali caught during the GS weekend. Hopefully we can bring in some salmon and the big halibut - it's nice to have them in play.
-
I'm all about some "Charcoal".

@meettheKaji's - So glad you guys are coming. :smt001
Here's the dealio: the roster is shaping up nicely, as is the raffle item list. All of the trophies and other goodies are falling in to place. GS11 is poised to be one of the best yet. I'm stoked to see so many good friends sign up, and I'm really impressed and excited to see newb's navigate what can be a vague path to the event. If you want in this gig, you can do it! It's not that hard.
I will post an official roster once registration is closed (April 20th), and I'll list what gear people ordered, so it can be checked for accuracy and you can let me know if there is a discrepancy.
I'm really amped for this year's event! :smt001
I'll give some confirmation of the salmon season and the Pacific halibut season in the coming week or so - salmon is almost a sure thing, and Pac hali is looking very good for us. More to come...

Salmon is confirmed open during GS11, but pacific halibut will be closed since the season dates remain the same as last year's which 1st-15th of each month through August then September 1st til October 31st or whenever CA DFW decides we met our quota which went up a few thousand lbs.

I'm so stoked that salmon will be open, and if someone hooks a Pac hali I hope they treat it well and they or someone around them gets a pic or video of the release.

That's getting decided this morning and the Recommendation to the commission is that it would be open during GS.
https://nrm.dfg.ca.gov/FileHandler.ashx?DocumentID=141766
The season would open May 1 and close June 15, open July 1-15, August 1-15, then September 1-October 31 or when the quota is met.
Meeting starts at 10am. We should know by noon but unless Rob knows something I don't and barring unforeseen circumstance it should be open for GS.

Fish and Game Commission unanimously approved and adopted the recommendation with the dates I listed above.
Pacific Halibut is open for GS 11.

We really need this term to enter the NCKA vernacular. Anyone who shows up first needs to get camp meat. The second person to show up brings the beer.

I can't speak for Kiel, but I'm bringing the family to come and chill. I'll probably bring my kayak and fish at some point, but I surely won't be in tournament mode. :)
I would like a sweatshirt, though! Can I fill out a reg and send money for just a sweatshirt?

Ok boys and girls,
Looks like they have fixed the majority of the pot holes on the road in to the cove. Also, if you are not aware, hwy 101 is currently closed due to a major slide near Legget. It will be closed for about another week, but should be clear in plenty of time for GS.
Now the good news.
We just had a cancellation here at the Tides Inn for this event. We have one room available with two full size beds. This room rents for $170 per night and we also have a event special (5 nights for the price of 4). This room will book fast so don't hesitate.
If you would like to book this room, call Verna here at the Tides Inn

Been considering it!
I do want salmon - really bad. But it'll be that much sweeter when I finally bag one at the Cove this season.
Yesterday had good conditions, but it just wasn't happening.

Saturday's story:
Cove, day 2.
I was a little bummed to miss the March for Science, but I did have work to do! Helped some friends with drywall repairs at my favorite Inn and got a second round of trolling in from 830 to just after noon. A few rockfish and a lingcod were the only biters on my circuit from the Bell to the Whistle, north through B&B and then across the front. The water was nice, but there was a decent swell from the south combining with a west...
I knew the forecast had the swell building, and the Cove can get a little sketchy with south and west influences. As I got back to the launch area I neglected to wait out the set that was pounding the breakwater. I got just inside the end of the jetty and a pretty big swell was coming on my tail. I calmly turned my yak around to face this breaker with my bow, thinking I had this in the bag. Bad idea! Instead of punching through this with any momentum I was a sitting duck as this swell surfed me backwards! Before I knew it I was moving right along and knew it wouldn't end well. The slightest turn of my keel had me instantly flipped in about four to five feet of water. That happened extremely fast. I scrambled to get my boat turned over, grabbing whatever I could reach of the yardsale items around me. I'd had no time to grab anything before being under my yak, so I was really relieved when my net and the rod in the other holder were still there - benefit of flipping in shallow enough water to not allow those two to fall out of the holders. Then I thought of my second rod that had been in my lap. I was again stoked to find that it was right there still, attached to some rigging by the hook on the end of my line. A tackle box here, a cooler there, all my water bottles... I actually thought I had everything recovered, but a bit later I realized that my knife was missing. Lucky - very lucky.
That was a first for me in all my years of yakking on the ocean. Never take launching and landing for granted.
-
I think most of my salmon this year will come from Oregon. I'm setting my goal for 4 salmon from the Cove.
-
Glad you only "sacrificed" a knife to the sea Goddess. Thanks for the report and pictures from the Cove. You persistence will pay off soon.
-
I was in the cove to day, just got done hiking from Mattole mouth to the cove on the lost coast with my kids. Had a blast. Lots of dead intertidal litter on the beaches, including a metric shitton of rock crabs. It was weird, not sure why that was. The reefs south of Millers were holding tons of life, seals, otters, birds working, rocks covered in mussels and gooseneck barnacles, it was inviting. I didn't really have time to stop and cast a line because of dad duty and not wanting to get stuck north of gitchell on an incoming tide but it looked really good.
Jack said there might be an RV spot left, not sure about hookup situation, but if you need a space fr a trailer or RV at the campground I would call asap.

Eric- How many new participants? How does that number compare to years past? If it isn't easy to answer don't go out of your way or anything, just curious.

Butts and Chrome.....Thats All Im seeking this year at GS11!! 🤣😅😂

Got 2 more entries today - that should be it for 4/20 postmarks...
44 rookies. Not sure how that compares to years past, but here's a breakdown of stats on them:
- 8 of the rookies were guiding clients of mine;
- 2 of the rookies are NCKA OG's - Sean White and Cameron Cardoza;
- 9 are LCKA and/or attended Rockfish Wars;
- most of the rest are friends who didn't need to ask for a sponsor - they're coming based on the direct recommendation and/or plans of friends who are attending. For instance, the Saufferer bros have three friends coming; Darius has a few friends coming; Jason Tanagon has a couple friends coming...etc.
I'm happy with how the tournament roster shaped up. It's hard to downsize!
-
Jason's friends can't come. Please don't let them come to GS. PLEASE. That is if it is the same friends that were at Berryessa.

Interesting, thanks. With right around 200 and noticeably less promotion this year I wondered what affect that would have. Seems like not very much, at least yet. I'm looking forward to a great event. Thanks again and good work Eric!

Thanks, Doug.
Numbers were down significantly about 3 to 4 weeks ago, and I started freaking a little about ordering several different shirt/hoodie/hat configurations without the volume to support it. I was going to avoid putting it on Facebook at all, but I felt like I needed to bolster the roster.
I think that the phenomenon that's occurring is that there are lots more events now, so people are less likely to commit early. To get over 100 in the final two weeks was unique.
It will be a great event - let's hope the spring winds don't hammer us too hard since they've been delayed by all the rain...
-
My two friends who registered and came to the event last year (Anthony&the spaniard) are coming back again this year but didn't have their shit together to get registered in time. So thats probably why we have 2 less registered. Of course I will have to give them shit about it all weekend.

I'm in site 6, not 7 this year and willing to host the oyster feed again. Very close to the outdoor picnic patio. Any others who want to peddle their wares, lures, lead heads and such are also welcome to set up a table as well

Right on thanks Eric and Jerry.

Speaking of oysters? Rob . Will you be placing orders for those fine specimens from trinidad area again? Inquiring minds from the south looking to partake. Thx

Looking for a paddling teammate for GS11. I started this great kayak fishing adventure last Father's Day at Trinidad, and have since been out fishing twice a month on average. Experience includes Caspar, Bolinas, Tomales, Timber Cove. If you are looking for a safety-conscious teammate who is looking forward to his first NCKA tournament, I would be happy team up with you.

Monday's Adventure: opening the abalone season with Gus. I donated a trip to the Fortuna High School Safe and Sober Auction a couple months ago, and Gus won it with a generous donation to the kids.
Today was our chance to meet and do a trip of Gus' choice. He wanted to go abalone diving, so that's what we did. The ocean was good to us, and Gus picked a limit. I'd told him that I could carry his weightbelt and dive right with him, but I was clear that I could not pick his abalone for him. Turned out that wasn't a problem, as Gus was all over it and found 3 nice ones even in the surge and low viz. At 67, my guest kicked ass at a sport that is extremely demanding, and I was so stoked to be there as his partner.
We're going again on Wednesday. :smt001
Don't forget to bring all the toys...

That's awesome Eric! :smt006

Right on Gus!

FYI, Inn of the Lost Coast has a few rooms still available for GS weekend.

Anybody in the Sacramento area going to GS11 that would be willing to bring some things there for me? Please send me a PM.
Thanks!

It was nice seeing you and Gus, Eric. We went out again yesterday. So much fun. Those rocks are absolutely teeming with life.

Day 2 with Gus.
Having seen a favorable forecast I arrived at the Cove yesterday looking for slick-calm water, but heavy wind chop coming in from the outside had nearshore waters looking pretty raspy. Gus was up for trying out the kayaks, so we geared up and got on the water for a tour. It wasn't an ocean I would've taken a total noob on - Gus has a powerboat and has done canoeing and other water sports, so we went for it. He handled the steep and mixed swell really well and enjoyed the experience, but the fish weren't biting well as the tide was dropping to a midday minus.
By late morning we wrapped up the boating and headed for our dive location. Met up with a friend of Gus', Steve, and he joined us for the session. Water was clearer than Monday, but the chop and an occasional beefy set from the west added to the challenge. Success was achieved and fun was had as we found plenty of abs and other critters along the reef.
We parted ways early afternoon and I headed back to the ramp to organize my gear and decide on my afternoon itinerary - nice to have some options since I didn't need to get the kids from school this day. As I hung out enjoying the sun and gentle water in the Cove I saw that the outside waters had mellowed a lot since the morning. Twenty minutes later I was dropping herring on the reef, and now the lings and rockies were biting much better. Saw several whales including moms with calves, chased some birds around hoping for a salmon to bite my barbless hooks, and ended up grabbing some fresh white meat for dinner. Wrapped it up and basked in 80 degree temps on the drive home late afternoon.
Enjoyed getting out with you, Gus, and nice to meet you, Steve. Shelter Cove is where it's at! :smt001
-
More Cove pics from 5/3

Eric, Glad You and Gus made the weather window to fish and dive the cove, and nice work with the abs and getting out Gus. I considered a cove or Tdad dive trip Tuesday but couldn't make it happen.

Gear's in.
My printer ended up getting wires crossed on the color for the hoodies, so "Solid Charcoal" got ordered, instead of "Charcoal Heather" that I'd chosen. I'm letting them off the hook. Solid Charcoal it is! They look good.
Everything else looks good and will be fun to hand out and get everybody all decked out in.
I got a few extra hats and shirts - hit me up at the event if you're wanting anything.

There will be lots of hoodies.
Since my printer made the mistake of wrong color we decided together that she's making the right ones, and I'll take the gray ones and try to recover their costs by selling them at the event. I'm trying to figure out how to work it. Stay tuned...

just curious on the camping situation? find a empty spot? pay for person?
The campground (it's right in the middle of everything and close to the ramp) sets aside a nice group area for us. $26 per night per person - it's worth it because the sites are small if you rent them individually.

Do the kids need to pay for the shirts?
Kids print for free - shirt included (15 and under, must be accompanied by an adult). :smt001
And we have kids' sizes this year! Small, medium and large youth. We have plenty of adult sizes available too - like 50 mostly larges and XL's.
Anyone other than kids can purchase a Gimme Shelter Gyotaku shirt for $20. You get instruction on the printing process, do a couple test prints on newsprint and then go for it on a shirt. If you don't want to throw the bones down for a GS11 Gyo shirt you can print your own shirt - donations toward ink and such are appreciated.
This year we'll have cash prizes for the kids as usual, and there are some special prizes too...

Just a reminder
The Lighthouse preservation society will be having a fundraiser again this year at the park on may 19. This year they will be serving BBQ Pulled Pork sandwiches with sides and also some baked goods available.
This is a great way to help support the local community and also get a hot meal before (or after) the safety meeting.

Heads Up
If you see a fat, old, grey haired guy riding a old Honda big red 3 wheeler with an eternal grin on his face .........
Stop him and say hi, and maybe reintroduce yourself.
His memory is slipping, his eyes are blurry, but he's always glad to see you.

Got the replacement hoods!
It's not that the "Solid Charcoal" ones don't look good - just not what I ordered.
I'll have the gray ones available, and the darker ones go to those who pre-ordered.

No, there are no electric hookups in the group sites but there is nearby and you can find a place to plug in/charge electronics.

Just a few reminders for the area and time surrounding GS ....
1. The tractor service is operated by the Harbor District and has right of way on the beach ... Leave them a clear and wide path to do their buisness (all days, not just during the event)
2. There will be a be a fundraising BBQ at the park on Friday the 19th before and after the safety meeting (hosted by the Lighthouse Preservation Society)
3. There will be a memorial service for a community member lost recently to tragic events on Sunday the 21st. Most local buisness owners will be in attendance, so services will be scarce on Sunday.
4. Fish and Wildlife will be in town during this event. KNOW THE REGULATIONS. Don't be that guy that make us look bad.
(if you have questions, take it off channel ... everyone is listening).
I look forward to seeing everyone and having a great time. Please be sure to introduce yourself if you see me (I'm not good with names so please excuse me).
Good luck this week and please stay safe.

If there is anyone who didn't find a campsite for Friday night, I have one available if needed. I originally claimed a site for both Fri & Sat but I was able to get a room for Friday night. I'm still hoping to get in on a room cancellation for Saturday night but if not I will be using the campsite that evening. No biggie if someone wants to share it. My buddy and I are only tossing up a tent and using it to crash so we wont take up much room. Shoot me a text if you need it. (707) 239-8568

There's nothing in the rules about it, but I'd discourage anyone from launching and landing anywhere but the launch in the Cove.

Well, the drive to Shelter Cove almost went without a hitch...almost. The drive was quicker than expected. Left home at 5:45 and could have arrived by 10 am, except for one slight hiccup. On the drive down the hill, I missed the sign to turn left at the fork (Yes, Yakhopper reminded me later to simply follow the center stripes.
So I ended up heading farther up the mountain to Petrolia, eventually leaving pavement to drive on unfamiliar dirt road. GPS told me to keep going. Ended up about 5 miles off course. At one curve in the road, I encountered a car coming downhill and moved to the right to give him room. Bad move! Very bad moon!! Ended up in the ditch next to the road. Honked several times at the car that passed me which initially backed up to see me...and then...he left. without offering to help.
So there I was, stuck in the ditch. Moving forward or backward just got me more entrenched in the clay soil. After about 5 minutes, another car came downhill, this time a lady who said she would try to call her husband to bring his chains to pull me out. An hour passed. No cell service. Eventually another driver stopped and, if my memory is still clear, she is a resident named Peggy who tried to help by gathering tree branches to maybe help me get enough traction to back out of the ditch. Before she got much done, the first lady's husband showed up to pull me out of the ditch successfully.
The good samaritans were surprised the first driver did not help. They said they were probably not locals. They said local residents help people out because it could very well be one of them in the ditch with no cell service.
So I eventually arrived at Shelter Cove a couple of hours later than expected. No truck damage; just a bit of mud that was washed off mostly by the drizzling rain.
I am SO happy not to be stuck on the mountain for the evening. And kudos to the very nice residents who helped me out of my predicament. I think I will get some chains to help out any people in similar circumstances. And maybe consider making my next truck a 4x4 if that makes a difference.
-
That's crazy howard!! Karma will get that person who caused it in the first place and didn't help. What a jack-ass!! I always carry recovery equipment in my suv just in case I need to help someone out or need help myself. I would opt to carry recovery rope ie kinectic or bubba rope instead of chain. I know chain can come in handy in some situation but recovery rope is the way to go.
glad you made it there safety!

Shelter Cove
“I ran north Friday and Saturday to Rodgers Break for rockfish and the fishing was fantastic,” said Jake Mitchell of Sea Hawk Sport Fishing. “We limited out in 3 drifts the first day. We had what looks to be a big algae bloom in the Cove and near shore, which I believe it's a result of all the strong winds we've had creating upwelling. I am also starting to see a little more bait around and they were catching salmon in decent numbers on Tuesday, so I think things are looking up.” Saturday is the 11th Annual Gimme Shelter Kayakfishing Tournament at the Cove, so the launch area could be a little congested.

See y'all in the morning. I had so much to get done at home and as I was almost ready to go to the Cove I realized I forgot to make the salsa for the taco shark so I went out and got the goods and made the salsa. I'll be there early to launch and ready to slay some fish. The best weather will be Monday thru Thursday if folks want to get on some epic fishing.
Future reports this week will contain salmon, tons of big rockfish and lings over 38" as well as some big Pacific halibut cuz that's how me and my friends roll. Go big or go home.
-
We're all friends, bro! See you soon. :smt001
-
Today: salmon bites - very scarce. A couple of Cali halibut caught but didn't get more detail...
The past two days for some - big cabs. At least 2 over 26" and they are on the chew!
Tomorrow... Holy shit - I just looked at the forecast! Wind looks to be up.
I predict a few Cali's will come into play.

Tourney day came up with a pretty nasty forecast. Right from sunrise the ocean was in a bad way - there were huge and unorganized wind waves coming inshore from strong winds out at sea. Albion from a couple years back came to mind, but some of these steep waves with rolling tops were getting volatile. At around 7 or 730 someone got tossed. People responded well and no one was hurt, but conditions looked like they were just going to degrade. After a while and another capsizing I made the call on the radio for everyone to come toward port and fish inside of a line between the launch and the green can. I revised that to a line between the lighthouse and green can after a bit, and then after a while I opened things up again with a warning not to get too far out. Conditions actually mellowed a little during the day, but it wasn't good out there.
Lingcod were on the chew for some, but no second tourney species came in. At least one salmon was lost - no salmon landed for the event weekend and maybe one or two others lost on pre-fishing days. 3 Californias were landed Friday, so that was cool. No Pacifics, but the charter boat got a 50 pounder just outside of our position Saturday - that was our fish!!
All in all the group was safe, respectful and supportive of each other. People had fun and the Cove residents were good to us.
We have a dynasty on our hands, as big Terry Saufferer / Jacks took 1st place by several inches with two lings over 30" - with an unprecedented 3rd GS victory we're talking legend status right there! Ron and Terry also took the team title. Amos bagged the "Killer Catch" trophy with a fat 33" lingcod. Forrest Johnson got the Sportsman of the Day trophy for assisting with a rescue and communicating it nicely on the VHF. Brandi got the GS11 Vibe trophy for her tireless efforts in Gyotaku, and she also handed out 6 custom Gyotaku awards to child volunteers and a couple of key adults who support the effort. Roger and Dennis Shu took home the GS11 Communitas trophy for the phenomenon that is known as "Shuland" - we are so lucky to have their energy and generosity and to be able to share such quality time.
Killer raffle prizes were awarded, about $6K in charity proceeds went 50-50 to PIF and HOW, the potluck was a smash, the Taco Shack was a total Pro Show, and true Love was flowing - this is what we do.
The highlight of the weekend revolved around Steph, as we focused our energy on acknowledging and communicating our feelings and sending strong support to our beloved community member.
The photo roll is long, and there's much more storytelling to do. I'll put up a report post if there isn't already one.
Thank you, everybody, for helping me make the event what it was. :smt001
-
Congrats to Terry and Ron for the individual+team domination! Sounds like those were some uber-tough fishing conditions--the type of day where you need to make every bite count. Looking forward to fishing with you guys this year, and at GS-12!
I admit, the ominous weather forecast for this weekend lessened the sting of missing GS this year...but only a little bit. Looking forward to seeing more pics of the event!

Beautiful! Looks like a success and lots of fun 👍

Got in Friday afternoon instead of noon. My suspension somehow leaked and my car went really low, hitting the pave every time I break or turn. As soon as we pull up to shuland, its a feast as usual. Warmed the adobo and it was nonstop feast from there. I didnt get to fish on the tourney, went out for an hour, it was nasty. Went back in, took me longer to prepare than being on the water. My apology to my team. Next time fellas. Though, I didnt get fish, I still had an awesome time. Seeing everyone and meeting new people! It is an honor to be at shuland! My family is asking and want to come again!
Couple of shout outs! Eric for continued success of GS and for all his hard work! Looking forward for the next year already. Taco shack and crew as always its superb team work everyone! all that hard work made the tacos extra special! Dennis and Roger thanks for allowing us to stay at Shuland, the superb cooking was non-stop, the crab feast was amazing! To Salty thanks for the gifted fillets and carcass I didnt went home empty handed. Lastly Bradley thank you bro for taking my kayak with you. It help lessen the worries of overloading my car! Thank you everyone and as always its great to see you all!

Finally arrived at a space where I am looking at melting in to a couch and not moving much until tomorrow's dive with Ron. Need to download some photos and will give briefs in the mini captions.
KayakJack's got ribs and chicken rubbed and ready for the BBQ here at The Tides. The ocean mellowed today and I can hear some of our best out there doing some catching - KayakGreg put a nice California on the boat this morning.
Thanks for being a part of it. :smt001

Best part was perch fishing very late in the afternoon till evening and landing slabs after slabs. :smt003
See you next year bro :smt006
Thanks again!

We arrived on Thursday about 3:30pm and set up camp and within minutes, so many folks had already come up to say hi to me. I feel bad I have trouble remembering names, but no one seemed to mind having to remind me. THANKS!
My teammate, John, AKA OldFart, came by with his lovely bride and we made plans for an early prefish on Friday of 5am at my camp to head down to the launch. On the water about 6am and by 9am I was ready to go back in! Not because the water was rough and I was feeling a bit seasick, well, partly, but mostly because I was getting worn out from cranking up so many fish! I lost count of hauling up lings at 9. I don't recall how many blacks. But speaking of Blacks, they were HUGE! I love how they shake their heads, compared to the strong pull of a ling. John and I found schools of Blacks that made our fish finders go solid from surface to the bottom, the fish so thick and stacked up, I couldn't drop my double shrimp flies more than 10' down before both would be holding fish. When we finally drifted off that mass of fish and I did manage to get my shrimp fly to the bottom, it got slammed by my biggest ling of the weekend; 30 1/2". I was so surprised to catch a ling on a puny shrimp fly. Up till then, I was catching the lings while trolling for salmon using a herring and a 4oz banana weight.
The conditions on Friday were a bit rough. The roughest water I've ever been on and I wouldn't have been out there except there was almost no drift and very little wind. A mere breeze. With only wave action to contend with, the seas were manageable They did lay down as the day wore on but from what reports I heard, the bite was in the morning, so I was glad John convinced me to get up at 4:30 and hit it.
Saturday had a little more breeze and the promise of flatter seas, but not the case. There were white caps on the horizon between the green and red cans, so we stayed just North of the green can in a rough a sea as we could safely manage, every once in a while retreating back to 35' waters when we got spooked by a breaking wave that would surprise us. But by 11am, it was out to the North of the green can and a pinnacle that held enough action, albeit not as much as Friday's action, to land our limit of lings and blacks. A slow troll back to launch gave John his 3rd and final Black for the day and we were done!
Out on the water, we could hear all the reports on how the water was tossing folks about so we knew we made the right call to stay in closer than we did the day before.
Along with the fishing, I want to say thank you to everyone that made me feel like I belonged. For the first time, I went to Shuland. Always walked by watching them having a great time and felt a little intimidated, I decided this time I'd check it out and drop off a little something for Dennis I had no use for; a bottle of Jack Daniel's White Rabbit I won at a previous Albion raffle. I figured he'd know what to do with it. Ha! No sooner had I walked within shouting distance than I was invited to grab a plate and dig in. Oh MAN! I have almost no idea what any of the stuff was, but it was off the charts gooooooood! Thanks Shuland, for the hospitality. I love the way you guys roll!
To Ken, AKA, traildad, so sorry you didn't make it. When I heard you were calling it because of illness, I was really bummed. It wasn't the same out there on the water without ya, but John and I could feel your good vibes coming our way.
I just want to add; I met a whole lot of new friends and I'll forget your names by next year as well as all the old friends. Thanks for coming up to say hi and introducing yourselves. I enjoyed everyone's company tremendously.
Eric, you are one class act. Thank you for all your hard work. Recently my 85 year-old dad came to live with me. He has Alzheimer's and it's been a labor of love to take care of him. I didn't think I'd be able to make GS this year because I won't leave him with anyone who doesn't care for him like family. At the last minute, my sister-in-law, who is recovering from hip replacement surgery, convinced me she could cover for me at my house and I could make it. I didn't realize how much I needed the respite until I walked over to the Tides Inn and you came out with a BIG grin, greeted me and handed me my t-shirt. Most folks never know it's the little things like a simple recognition of another that can make their whole weekend, and that's what your hello did for me. Cheers!

Got diverted from being able to melt into this couch...

Cheers!
Thank you, Jerry. Brought a tear to my eye. That's what GS is all about, buddy. See you next year. :smt001

Oh man what a blast thanks everyone for getting me there. Eric you are the man. I got my bag by the way lol. Special thanks to big Jim and Jason str8fishing for motivating and sponsoring me to go. I can't wait for the next event. I got sick tournament morning had to go back. Little to much booze at shuland night before but Sunday managed a healthy stringer of lings blacks and reds thanks to Wil, john, tyfish, Dylan, brooks, and Lauren, you're hospitality was amazing five star. Everyone at the cove was amazing. I loved every minute of it. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170522/66ecf7c0ae77f5fce87dc8be376593b4.jpg)

NCKA,
Huge thanks. Eric and Eric, Jacks Taco Shack, the folks at Shuland, anyone who donated, the sponsors and everyone that helped make this years event happen.
To all my friends, old and new-I can't wait to see you all next year. Oh yeah- and you all Rock! The generosity of this group makes me proud to be a member.
Thanks,
Aaron

Thanks for the nice writeup, Jerry.
I had a great time visiting, fishing, and just enjoying the vibe. This was my first time at the Tides Inn. Eric, Verna, and the gang were welcoming and gracious and made us feel right at home among new acquaintances.
GS is such an amazing event, everyone is family. Several times there were tears in my eyes as Eric expressed the love and community that is GS and NCKA during the pot luck.
In order to take in the experience more I chose not to carry my camera around but I did take a few pics while relaxing at the Tides.

Awesome, what a great event GS is!
Great photos everyone! :smt001

GS11 Reflections:
That is such great news to hear that Steph is on her way back to recovering and getting better. The NCKA community sent Steph a lot of good energy at the GS11. One of our NCKA Bruddahs took a video of GS11 crowd at the Potluck doing the wave and hooting it up for Steph on Saturday evening. What is your name and can you post the video? Mahalo!
Saturday one of the most brutal kayak fishing adventures that I've through. The huge swells coming in from the North were constant once we paddled out beyond the Cove. Fishing there for only the first time, I made a not wise decision to go father out, thinking that the swells would be less father out to sea. Wrong, I had my older brother out with me in the Oasis Tandem and the front Mirage Drive broke as we were heading out. When that happened, I should have turned around and headed back to the Cove. I felt that my chances were pretty good with the AMA outriggers mounted and thinking that somehow I was in the wrong area, as I was not seeing fish on my FF and not getting even a nibble, I kept paddling out. The ocean conditions turned brutal in the later morning and by the time, I decided to head in, they were huge swells coming in from the North, one after another. As we were coming in the same direction as the waves, you could see how big the swells were when they passed through, it was scary!!!
With only one Mirage drive, I was doing all the paddling and when we landed, I could hardly stand up as my legs were cramping up and locking. As we were hauling the kayaks up the hill, my thighs totally locked up with cramps and I couldn’t stand up and nor push the big heavy kayak up the hill.
After taking a shower, I stopped by to talk to 2 NCKA Bruddahs who were camped out in the same row as us. I mentioned that I had broken a part of my Mirage Drive and Otobepelagic-Alan? told me to stop by later and he might be able to repair my drive. I tracked down Alan, later and he reached in a box and matched the broken mirage drive part and repaired it in minutes. I told Alan (Otobepelagic) that I wanted to make a donation, but he told me that he has been doing this at NCKA Tournaments because if you break a drive or need parts, you are not going to be able to get one out in the wilderness. He was going this out the goodness of his heart to help NCKA'ers. Mahalo Alan, you made my day!!! After that it was all up hill. Ran into the DR. Dr. Habanero, who was camped out almost directly across us and he gave me a grilled skewer that was delicious. Tasty and the right amount of heat. I told the Doctor that never meeting him before and I imagined him as a Latino guy who like hot sauce. Mahalo Doc, now I know where the Habanero comes from!!
Oh, Shout to Oyster Boy for taking orders and bringing all the Kumos and Pacifics. On our first night, Friday, we slurped down 3 dozen super delicious Humbolt Bay Kumos. Those were the tastiest Kumos I've ever eaten. Mahalo Oyster boy!!!
After grilling my lemon grass, ginger, kefir lime leaves, curry/turmeric chicken; we headed down to the potluck and I was just blown away off the bat, by all the great food and happy people!!!
Shout out to the NCKA Bruddah with the straw hat with the Jack Daniels hanging around your neck. What is your name? Anyway, he was going around with a tray of small shot glasses all night long. When I sat down for dinner, I talked with 2 NCKAer's from Ventura County who drove all the way up here to come to the GS11. I was amazed to learn how far some of our NCKA Bruddahs traveled to come to Eric's GS Tournaments!!
After Eric led us with the GS11 WAVE for Steph's recovery and healing, the energy at the pavilion was just amazing and rocking. Then I hear my fishing partner's name Lingading/Herb Ng's being called up as the raffle prize winner for the Wilderness Systems Radar kayak!!! At that point it was all unreal/surreal!!!Hey Herb, you owe me bigtime for a dinner at your favorite Chinese restaurant in south city for dragging your ass up to and for doing all the provisioning for food at our campsite!!! Mahalo to Eric/his entire family and the NCKA crew who helped to make the GS11 possible. I don't know all of you but Mahalo to Big Jim, RacinBob, Kayakjack and his Fish Taco stand, Gotaku Girl?, and many more I know who helped out!!
We were camped next to HighTide/Allan and his 2 fishing buddies (Fred and ?)from North Bay/Vallejo/Fairfield area. Hey Allan, thanks for the great stories about how you got your Toyota pickup and the AI trailer and for "talking story” with a complete fisherman. I couldn't believe it when you showed me your ice chest; abalone uni. crab, the biggest red tailed Perch that I had ever seen. I'm going up to Timber Cove with Allan and his gang, next time they head to Timber Cove and the Salmon run at HMB!!!Great to meet some new NCKA friends from the North Bay!!
I got to spend some time talking with Dry Bones (Steve Takagi)later Saturday night with the Shuland gang at the motel and he showed and shared with me his fishing tackle and the things he had fabricated on his PA. He showed me this homemade live well that I first thought he had bought and he told me how he made it, I was blown away. Arigato Steve for the great conversations and I really appreciated you sharing your kayak fishing knowledge with me.
Shout out to our NCKA Bruddahs who helped rescue fellow Bruddahs who flipped their kayaks on Saturday and especially to the tall Bruddah with the beard, who was part of helping Lingading after he flipped my REVO on a big swell. What is your name? Hey Herb, you went from hell to heaven in one day. Congats for being the Grand Prize winner. You owe me a great dinner at the restaurant that serves 3 Ways Ling Cod, for hauling your ass up to SC and provisioning for camping out at the GS11!!!!
Shout and thank you for the great memories at GS11!! I came for the fish, but in the end was hooked on the NCKA Community. Kindness, having fun, helping each other when in need, sharing, are is in short supply these days when our world and country is reeling and divided. Back in Oakland and reflecting on the weekend, I realize that I had been part of something special, I will carry this warm feeling for a long time, my body is still aching a little, but my heart is full!!
Mahalo nui loa,
Da Bruddah

Thank you so much Eric and everyone who made GS11 happen ! Had a great time and got to meet new people. After everyone left on Sunday I went out in 50 ft lined up with red can and lighthouse and hooked a 30 inch cal Hali plus a 29 3/4 ling a rock and a 2 # barred perch . Then with wetsuit still wet went down and got a limit of abs ! What a day in the cove . I had to leave at 4 am but My dad Lawrence and Doug are there now tearing it up on flat seas. Thx everyone for the great time.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170522/12705ece58b5cb16c45fc40793f5bbf4.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20170522/296406a75e235d71e5320bea438b5565.jpg)

Just an FYI - your perch is a redtail, not a bsp.
Excellent stringer. Congrats on the halibut!
-
This was my 3rd and favorite GS yet. The vibes, the food, the conditions, the fish. Just a straight up good time. Thanks to everyone for making it a killer weekend.
-
Thank you Eric and Claire for another epic and memorable event. Your hard work in making this event a continued success is much appreciated! Kim, KK, and Kai Kai had a blast as well.
Shout out to Brandi for another amazing experience of fish printing for the little buddies, they love their t-shirts!
Great hanging out and meeting new faces that showed up to Shuland. Thank you to those that came by and contributed to the good times, whether it was food, beverages, or fun, it made this GS the most memorable of all for me and my family. Big thank you to everyone that makes it possible, Steve Takagi, Marco, Tim, Dave, Glenn, Kevin, Tiffany, Martianfish, Old #7 and Dylanator, Big Jim, SC Trace, Aaron, Darius, Zisco, Josie and Mario, Mason, IRoeLikeThat. Thanks to you guys I gained 10 lbs over three days... :smt005 We are humbled and honored to receive the Communitas Award from Eric, we look forward to continuing to promote what Gimme Shelter is all about. Remember, everyone is always welcome at Shuland, we try our best to throw down to the fullest!
Most importantly, I'm still amazed by the love and support shown for Steph. Thank you to those that came by to sign the banner. Some came up to us and straight up donated cash to the cause, including a couple of the sheriff's deputies that was checking out the scene and learned about Steph's condition. Much love and Mahalos to the entire NCKA family.
Oh was there fishing at this event? haha Congrats Terry for slaying them again, you are the man!
See you guys at the next one!
Sincerely,
Roger

pps...somebody posted on my facebook that I could drive the same distance from Watsonville and spear big WSB instead of getting three snails...didn't bother to respond because they obviously don't get it...if all you care about is the fishing/diving at GS, then you are missing out on the whole point. :smt001 :smt006

This! Some people won't go if weather forecast doesn't look favorable for fishing. It ain't about driving bunch of hours to go fish or filling up the cooler!
It was good seeing you this weekend Jim. :smt006

Eric Thanks for all the hard work you put in so everybody can have a ridiculous amount of fun!!!!
-
GS11 was my first and won't be my last...I had a great time enjoying the experience and meeting new and old friends. Two days of back to back fishing with rough swell was tough. Bummer I didn't get to dive for some abalone since I was tired after being on the water for 7 hrs each day then coming back to drinking and eating :smt010 Not enough time. Next year I'm pacing myself lol
Thanks everyone who made this event what it is. Its definitely an awesome tournament in a majestic location with amazing people. I should have stayed a few extra days since its 104 in Fresno...yikes!!
A big shout out to Eric for an awesome job and the gears rock!! Can't wait for next year!!
-
Oh man.. what an incredible weekend! Thanks to Eric & family as well as all those who pitched in to help out. I was a doe-eyed noob this year but I plan on paying it forward next year and helping out wherever I can! Saturday's conditions weren't ideal, but on a positive note... weather made luck more of a factor than skill & experience so this noob and his rookie buddy made the podium in the team event! Ya baby!
Thanks everyone and see you at the next NCKA event!
-
I in no way can build on what has been said about GS11.
Eric you have did such a great thing for the community of Shelter Cove and the community of the NCKA.
This was the first event that my wife Judy had went too.
She had so fun at this event.
I made connection with Kevin and he brought Darius over to my camp with an introduction. Darius extended an invite over to Shuland , and Saturday nite Dennis called Judy" Momason"and made here eat the most delicious food And made us feel totally welcome.
Thanks to Doug for bringing the oyster, and Jack for the knockout tacos.
I met so many new people and was looking forward to meeting others
But seem to not make the connection, there's always the next event.
Even with the ocean upside down starting on Mothersday weekend my ten days off flew by like they always do.
I have been in touch with Bulldog since last November when he contacted me about fishing pyramid lake. Not only did I get to meet Alex, but got to spend some time on the water with him.
This event is the gathering of likeminded people enjoying life. Last year it rained and this year the sun shined on us.
This year I went on a trophy hunt for big abs to find zero viz, it happens. I caught few fish, but got many crabs to share.
But I had the best time with my family and friends.
Looking forward to next year.
Thank You again Eric and I'll be in touch soon.

Thanks everyone for the hospitality and good cheer you showed dead prez aka Mike and I this past weekend. It's funny, its only our 2nd year, but it feels like we have been part of this community a lot longer. The fact is we don't get to experience anything like this down south, but every year we will make this 10hr trek to be part of something really special .. thank you Eric! U r right..As it is not about winning a tournament, its about the people and the experiences this weekend provides for all of us.. we r all connected in more ways than can imagine.. few shout outs. Eric, thanks for taking Mike and I out abalone hunting on Friday pm considering all that goes on with planning this weekend. U absolutely rock! Doug aka oyster boy.. u r da man. Thanks for being you! Oh.. and the oysters😎... brudah . You are so full of life.. never change. To the father / son ensemble that we seem to always meet at the fillet station... thanks for always taking the time to be so cordial and informative.
To close, as Mike and I were leaving and filled up in garberville, a redway gentlemen walked up to us and said " I need to pic your brains about what u have on your truck " , and after 5 mins of filling, we were able to excite him about the joys of what we do with our kayaks..we exchanged phone #s and made a friend!
Hope to see you all next year!
God bless,
Joe

Are you the 2 guys that I talked with at the Potluck from Ventura County. I was blown away how far you came to be part of the GS event?

Thanks for another wonderful GS event at The Cove Eric. Looking forward to GSXII. Only 51 weeks to go :smt003

Thanks again for organizing the best tournament and fun time of the year. Your family focus is what makes this tourney special. My brother and I were fortunate to get into some quality lings. I think what helps us is that are legs are so long we could wrap them around our kayaks to keep from falling off! I did show my age when I mentioned to one of the younger participants that it was an E-ticket ride out there and he had no idea what I was talking about.
I also want to thank you for the dive trip on Monday. As usual you put an epic adventure together. I highly reccomend Eric's guide services. There is no one better!

Thanks , everyone for everything. The Cove is a special place and my soul is drawn to it. It was my first NCKA/GS event and I was stoked to hang out with such a grounded group of folks. See everyone next year.

Here's my report and pics and vid.
Thursday AM I took my daughter Jayme on a field trip to Pacific Grove, raced home, zisco picked me up and we hit the road.
Thursday night was up until well past midnight getting caught up and chilling with friends old and new.
Friday AM I paddled out with my good buddy Adam415, but the forecast was rougher than predicted and we had to "settle" for 9+ inch abalone instead of the coveted 10s. All good, cuz I didn't get ANY abalone last year so I was stoked to just see the cool snails again!
Also got my first Shelter Cove Scallop, and Adam put his excellent diving skills to work and pulled us a quick limit of fat urchins to bring back in the MoochYak for ShuLand.
Friday night we did abalone and scallops and uni bombs, and I ended the night partying at the bar which is always fun. :smt003
Saturday I was feeling a little "tired" but Adam dragged me out of bed and we paddled out into even sloppier seas...
Found a safe spot to anchor the yaks offshore and swam in to hunt for some meat.
I found a nice little cave down at 27 feet stuffed full of nice abalone.
With my heavy ab iron on the marker float line I was confident I would not lose the spot, so took one ab at a time leaving them on the floor of the cave until I had popped three then grabbed them all, swam to the surface, made an ab sandwich of all three, and swam back to the yak and we got the heck back to shore. :smt005 :smt044
Went back to the Motel, showered and changed, had some of Josie's world class Lumpia, rolled through camp to say hi to Jack and folks, got two twelve packs and some ice and headed back to beach to hand out cold beers to landing kayakers and see the fishies being brought in.
Saturday night was raffle and potluck and partying, and more bar time, and more food, and more fun. :smt003
Sunday Am packed up, had some breakfast burritos, a little hair of the dog and poured myself into Zisco's truck and woke up once he got me home. Gifted him two abalone for being a great buddy and for getting me up and back safe and sound. :smt002
Here's a little vid of some underwater fun, and a bunch of pics.

So much fun! Let's do it again!!!

Thank you Eric for organizing and everyone that made it a fun weekend. I had a blast once again. Fishing was tough and challenging specially on tourney day. A wave surged while I was on top of it and threw me overboard. Got back on it and fished for a few more hours, but nothing else would bite. Food and people were great and I can't wait for GS12
-
It was my 5th year at GS and it only gets better and better!! I would like to thank Eric Stockwell & Family and everyone else that helped make this another GS that I will never forget! I almost didn't get out and fish for the 2nd year in a row but I made it out tourney day to chill with the dudes and try to catch a flatty. But GS is never about the fishing anyways so I still had a great time chilling with everyone and stuffing myself like there's no tomorrow. :smt044
It was great to see everyone having a good time, can't wait til the next one!

Congratulations to my brother for vaulting our team to the championship. He caught his second ling at 1:10 so we could turn in two lings apiece.
I ended up catching 6 species: gopher, china, black, cab, and ling.

GS11 was my first organized fishing event and will definitely NOT be my last. Many thanks to Eric for organizing the overall event, Adam for handling the team event and sponsoring me, Ryan for pulling me onto his team, and all of the other fantastic organizers and participants! NCKA definitely ROCKS!
Looking forward to GS12 and volunteering my efforts where needed in this most deserving organization!
Ben
BTW, the pics and videos are great!

Congrats to Terry and Ron for the individual+team domination! Sounds like those were some uber-tough fishing conditions--the type of day where you need to make every bite count. Looking forward to fishing with you guys this year, and at GS-12!
Thanks Chris. Everybody missed you and hopefully in August when salmon opens again at the cove we can fish together.

Thank You Again Eric for all the HardWork you put into All the GS Events. What a Treat of An Event GS has become. Love it. My cuzin Joe had a blast and loved it as well. Was proud of his sea worthyness after those conditions. He's coming around. We had Fun. See ya next year... :smt006

Echoing what every one else said, thanks Eric and family for the time and effort you put in each year to make GS so special. My only regret is I can't clone myself a few times to be able to take in all the awesomeness in such a short amount of time!
My GS Report:
Arrived Friday at 10a. After dropping off gear at our rental house, took the boys tidepooling in front of the lighthouse, collecting crabs, hermit crabs, sculpins, and monkeyface eels to look at. Did a quick semi-dive with Hightide, watched him get a limit of abs, and I grabbed a dozen uni to share later on. Even in less than 5 ft of water with no weight belt, legal abs are easy pickings here! I even saw a nice sized greenling and a school of striped surf perch cruising around the shallows. After diving, had a quick lunch then headed down to the launch to join Daviator, his brother, and his friend on the water. Dropped a few crab pots then headed out for a few hours of fishing for a couple blacks and a couple lings. Headed back in, had a pulled pork dinner at the lighthouse, then went to the campground to chill with my LS family for a few hours. Our eldest son even had the courage to go up and do karaoke in front of the group!
Sat: Headed out to less than favorable conditions. Only managed 2 reds, 2 blacks, a cab, and a ling. Afterwards the potluck and relaxing!
Sun: Woke up late, tired, and sore from the previous days festivities. Finally decided to do a couple hours on the water, glad I did. The drift was fast and furious, but so was the bite. For 3 hours straight, the process was drop line, hookup, land fish, unhook, repeat, and then peddle a half a mile back to start the drift again. If you could get past the thick school of blacks (they often wouldn't let the rig get to the bottom) the reds and lings were on the chew. Over the course of the 3 hours fishing (had to be off the water by 1:30 because I promised my boy I would take him pole poling) I landed over 15 rockfish and 10 lings. Final tally: 5 Verms to 19", 1 Copper, 3 blacks, and 2 lings. Got in and poke-poled with my son for 1 (very) small cab. Ended the evening in the excellent company of my Loose Screw family.
Monday: Packed it up and headed home. Already looking forward to next year.

Thank you to Eric and all of the people that continue to make this event so special. I always look forward to getting back to the cove, excited to discover more of the magical and mystical experiences that I have experienced so many times before. Jack, your taco shack was off the hook! Shulanders-you guys rock! Tried out Andy1976's new Octopus jig, I was not disappointed. Went out solo on Monday (last 4 pics), conditions were very mixed, ran into to two cool cats with a Hali. Here are some pics-enjoy!

Our neighbor Brett aka Disney did alright with a trifecta of butt, abs, and fish, and all on his last day!
