I was just diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma, aka "cantonese cancer". Tumor in the nasal passage above the throat. I will receive chemo and radiation for treatment.
Prognosis is good.. looking forward to kicking it and getting back to normal.

tell us more marv...what made you feel that something was wrong? at what point did you decide to go to the doctor? was there any type of symptom that made you think...i need to go to the doctor now!
and of course i'm happy to hear that it is a cancer with a well known treatment plan rather than something more serious (you had me REALLY worried there last week), and i'll help out with whatever you need buddy..
i just can't quit you
I had been feeling crappy for a while - fatigued, nasal/sinus congestion. . then I noticed my lymph nodes on my neck were enlarging, and i was getting random nose bleeds = time to see the doc. The docs ordered a biopsy on the lymph nodes on my neck, a chest x-ray, and bloodwork, and ultrasound to check thyroid. They didn't mess around.
The lymph node biopsy results came back positive for nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells. I was then referred to the ear/nose/throat specialist. The bloodwork was good, normal blood cell counts, normal renal function. Chest x-ray was good - no lung cancer, thyroid was OK. The ENT Dr. explained what was happening and they were going to get me back on my feet and be with me all the way. The Dr. stuck a camera in my nose to see the tumor, and then performed a biopsy on it. She estimated 7 weeks for treatment - chemo and radiation.
I just had a MRI on my head/neck today, and will have a followup appointment with the ENT on thursday.
Thanks everyone for your support.
I was taken care of at the urgent care clinic, and ENT clinic at SF general hospital. Cancer treatment will be at UCSF med center.

I will be undergoing a 7 week course of chemo and radiation, starting on Oct. 25.
Chemo once a week on Mondays, radiation monday to friday 15 minutes each day.
It will be a grueling and painful process, but I will try not to let it get to me.
Theres a 50% chance I will lose the use of my right arm when this is over, due to the proximity of the cancer to the nerve that goes to my right arm. Bummer, I may have to get a hobie.
:smt001

Marv,
Thanks for sharing your update and treatment information. Chemo and rad combos can really kick the stuffing out of you, sap your energy big-time. We will pray for super accurate radiation delivery with no peripheral impact. Hang tough and try to keep nourished and hydrated to do your battle.

Just an update on my treatment.
I'm beginning the 3rd week of treatment tomorrow. The doctors have said things are going very well so far.
I am limited to eating mostly soft and liquid food due to the sores that develop in the mouth and throat from the radiotherapy. I am also losing sense of taste and saliva production. It is a chore to eat and sustain myself enough to keep my weight from dropping too much.
Chemo is a pain in the ass, I feel crappy for 2 days afterwards. The 2nd day being almost flu-like.
This week I hope to get well enough by Saturday or Sunday to do some crabbing if the weather permits.
Looking forward to recovery.

I haven't updated in a while, so here it is. The 7 week course of treatment ended 2 weeks ago. I've been recuperating since then. The treatment was very difficult to endure. I dropped 40lbs because it was difficult to eat and drink. A week ago I began to eat semi solid food again, so I put some weight back on and I am feeling a lot better. In 2 or 3 weeks I will start the next round of treatment - chemo once a month for 3 months. That should be a lot easier to endure than the 7 weeks of almost daily radiation and weekly chemo. :)
I probably shouldn't go kayaking yet. I'm still recovering, regaining some strength and energy.

Marv if there is anything I can do for you PLEASE let me know. Like picking something up or helping in any way. I live in Petaluma but can come down on the weekends if you need something. Craig

No Doubt! One or two concerted efforts at any of the gatherings should do it :smt044

Another update.
Its been 2 months since the 7 week treatment of chemo and radiation. My throat is pretty much all healed up from the sores resulting from the radiation. The only side effects that remain are lack of saliva production and my taste buds have returned to about 35%. Food still doesnt taste the way should, but I can taste more flavors, usually just lightly. My energy level been improving and I feel good overall.
I just completed the 2nd of 3 monthly chemos. Hopefully March will be the last month I will need chemo. I visited the ENT doctors last week where they used a scope to look at my nasal passage and throat. They said it looks really good in there.
There is still some residual affected lymph nodes in my neck that may need to be surgically removed. Doc says that will be determined at a later date - about 2 months.
Thanks again for all your support.
-
Good news Marv!
-
Hoping for the best my friend. Your a brave man, keep it up and best wishes.

There is still some residual affected lymph nodes in my neck that may need to be surgically removed. Doc says that will be determined at a later date - about 2 months.
A month ago, I had a PET/CT scan to check for any residual cancer. The good news is that the chunky lymph nodes on the right side of my neck didn't come up positive on the PET scan. The somewhat bad news is that a small spot on the left side of my neck lit up on the scan. The Dr then scheduled me for surgery, and it was pending on review from the tumor board.
The tumor board reviewed all the data and decided it wasn't conclusive that the spot that lit up on the PET was residual cancer. To spare me a possibly unnecessary surgery, they decided it was best to wait and monitor the spot that light up on the scan. It didn't really add up that I would get a residual positive spot on the left side of my neck when 90% of the cancer was on the right side which was now clear. So there is a good chance it was a false positive. We're all hoping thats the case.
A MRI is scheduled for June 16th, and I will see the Dr. on the 22nd. I will have another update then.

Good news.
I met with the Dr on June 22nd, he gave me the report from the MRI that was performed on the 16th. It basically stated there was no evidence of residual disease. There was also some soft tissue around the right skull base that may need attention, however it was improved from a comparison image taken in Feb.
I have another PET/CT scan in August and we will move forward from there.
I've been feeling really good the past month or so, but I still have a lingering sinus issue which is affecting my taste. Saliva still really low.
Thanks again for everyone's support. :)

That's GREAT news!!!

Way to go, Marv. Stick with the follow-ups to keep that b*tch from poppin' back up.
-
Marv congrats on the MRI! See you tomorrow buddy. Bring that pink scupper
-
Another update - good news.
I had another PET/CT scan in August. A small spot lit up, same as the last one 2 months ago, but with slightly reduced intensity. The Dr. then informed me again that surgery may be the next step, but they will discuss my case at the tumor board and get back to me.
I anxiously waited a week to see the doc, after they discussed my case at the tumor board. He gave me good news, no evidence of recurrent cancer, and the spot that lit up is probably residual inflammation caused by the radiation treatments. I don't feel completely out of the woods yet, but we are optimistic. :smt001
I got my life back, minus the saliva.
Big thanks to NCKA for helping me get back on my feet.. I will be paying it forwards and backwards as long as i am able. I just learned how to brew beer, so I will be passing some of that around at future events.
-
Excellent report that it's residual inflammation and not a recurrence. Congratulations, I am sure that is a huge relief, awesome news.

I had a MRI on Dec. 15th, I saw the ENT on Monday 1-30-12, Oncologist on Tuesday 1-31-12. They say everything looks good, see you in 4 months.
My sense of taste is inconsistent, due to lingering sinusitis. This should resolve itself eventually.
I have a new medication for producing saliva. It works well and has freed me from my hydration pack/water bottle.

Great news Marv! What a marvelous start to the new year. Continued sucess to you!
-
I got an MRI done on June 4th, 2012.
Report says, "No evidence of recurrent or residual disease".
The spot they were keeping an eye on has been stable - no change, which is a good thing.
My only issues are a sinus infection, less saliva, and back pain.
My sinus has improved, the right side is clear, some lingering junk in the left side. We're working on that - they prescribed antibiotics and took a sample to culture. The drainage system for the sinus is damaged due to the radiation treatment so I am predisposed to sinus infections.
Saliva issue is not that big of a deal, its tolerable. My taste is finally pretty much normal. I appreciate food texture and flavor more after living for quite a while without taste.
My biggest discomfort is my back - its taking forever to get better - no kayaking until it heals. :(
-
What exactly is wrong with yor back Marv??
I just did a series of spinal injections, 3 in about 7 weeks.
It helped a lot.
-
I think the muscles are strained, and my pelvis / lumbar curve is off kilter.
I am doing specific stretches and exercises to improve it, and avoiding activities that strain it - such as sitting for prolonged periods, motorcycling, bicycling, kayaking. All the fun stuff.
Driving for hours the past few weekends didn't help. :-)
-
that's awesome Marv!
I've been having upper back issues as well - lucky for me, Stanford gives 15 to 20 minute free massages to breast cancer patients.
I also do this

After experiencing cycles of pain and relief, I've come to the conclusion the most likely cause of the pain is sciatica. The pain can be really bad, I'm effectively disabled when it is present.
Now we have to find out what is causing it - herniated disc, degenerative disc, or spinal tumor. Hopefully its not the spinal tumor.
Ugh.
Working on getting a MRI for the back.
-
Hey Marv.
Chiropractic as been the savior for my back since I fell off a roof and broke my back in two places.
Still lovin your custom spiral rod, although maybe there's something wrong with it, since it didn't catch me any Halibut Sunday at ARW :smt002
-
Best wishes, Shicken! Back problems suck.
-
I hope it is just a plain old back pain than anything bro. Thanks for the update and stay positive Marv. See you soon brother.
Jedmo
-
GD it Marv! I was so sympathetic to you, I went and wrenched my GD back.
I really mean it now when I say I feel your pain :smt009 :smt044
-
Keep at it, Marv - sciatica sucks, BTDT. Hopefully, it's nothing serious.
-
Marv, I'm glad to hear you're beating the disease!
If your back is too sore to paddle but can still peddle, I've got a Hobie you can use.
-
Marv,
I too can feel for you with Sciatica. Chiropractic works, but it is a weekly thing. I've been doing it for ten years now. My lower back is shot with herniated, hardened discs as wll as degenerative disc diease; aka totally messed up. I've had to keep up my core strength by making weight training my lifestyle; four-five days a week. It helps a lot till my back flares up and I can't move at all which comes on at any time with no warning.
Hope all stays well with you and you can work through this too. Take care
-
I have bad news... it turns out my back pain is probably cancer in a few of the vertebrae.
I'll update again with more news after further testing.
-
Thinking about you, buddy. Keep us updated.
-
Sorry to hear that Marv. Positive vibes and thoughts coming your way.
-

Dang it.
Back pain can be hard to deal with and become depressing. Complicate it with Cancer and I'm sure it has you feeling blue. Just set small goals and savor them, as well as enjoying time with your family (NCKA family too). That's the best medicine.
Best wishes !!!!

I will have a PET CT scan pretty soon to check for tumors elsewhere in my body.
-
Prayers and good vibes your way brother!

I'm hoping its that little isolated spot Marv. I've been thinking of you. I know you know how to stay positive.

Heres the latest news:
The MRI reveals a 5cm mass next to the spine.
I had a visit with the radiation oncologist, she reviewed teh MRI and said its fleshy and funny looking, possibly something new, not related to my nasopharyngeal cancer. Could even be a benign tumor or infection.
A PET scan is scheduled for Friday, and a biopsy will be done soon to find out exactly what it is.
-
fingers are crossed, and prayers said.........
-
thanks for keeping us updated Marv :smt045 Wish you the best buddy! Call me if you ever need a ride or just company
-
I like the sound of "benign" :smt001
-
Marv,
Hang in there and you are in my thoughts and prayers even so far away as I am.
-
Biopsy confirmed the tumor is metastasis of the nasopharyngeal cancer.
The plan is to have 6 to 8 cycles of chemo (1 every 3 weeks) and some radiation.
First cycle scheduled for next Thursday.

Cancer update:
Completed 6 cycles of chemo and 5 weeks of radiation.
Chemo was given every 21 days, my last one was 8 days prior to Albion.
I had a pet scan on Aug 9th. The report says no new tumors. The single mass is still present but much reduced in size and possibly inactive. No further chemo needed for now. Will get another scan in a few months and take it from there.
Thanks for everyone's well wishes and support.

Great seeing you at Albion Marv - good news! Best to you.

I had a whole body PET/CT scan on Dec. 12th. I met with the oncologist today, she told me the scan looks good.
The existing mass by the spine has shrunk further from the previous scan on Aug 8th. There are no new tumors. In summary, as in the previous scan, there is no evidence of active cancer at this time.
The doc is anticipating something new - she says I have a 60 to 90% chance of a new tumor popping up, so we are keeping an eye on things. Next scan scheduled for April 2014.
Thanks again for everyone's support and Happy Holidays!
-
Thanks for sharing the great news Marv. Have a great holiday to you as well bro. Take care.

I just had another scan on April 29th, saw the doc on May 6th. Good news, no sign of cancer. Next scan in 6 months.
This is a huge relief. A year ago, before I started treatment, I asked the doctor if it was possible to get rid of this tumor. Her response was, "it's extremely unlikely." The tumor was quite large, about 6-7cm across. Fortunately it was the only tumor. Treatment began in April 2013, and completed August 2013. The first scan in Aug 2013 showed no indications of active cancer, although some of the tumor remained. Doc said I'd have a 90-60% chance of having another tumor, and it usually shows up in the first year or two. I'm in the middle of that time frame now.
My chances are improving, and the outcome is hopeful, but I'm not out of the woods yet. I'm grateful to be somewhat back to normal, and for everyone's support.

Ya Marv!!!!
-
Good news! Glad to hear it.
-
Some new developments - last month I felt a bump on the side of my neck.
MRI of the neck confirms that a single lymph node is enlarged. Fortunately the chest/abdomen/pelvis CT scan is good, and the single tumor in the neck is not that big.
I'll be getting treatment again probably in Sept. - radiation with either chemo or a new immune stimulator drug.
-
Glad to hear that the CT scan for the chest/abdomen/pelvis scan came back clean!!
Like I said via PM...if you need any help from PIF or anything else besides prayers and good vibes just let me know!!

Its been a while since I've updated!
I've been receiving the immunotherapy drug Keytruda at UCSF since Sept 2015 - every 3 weeks, and a PET/CT every 3 months or so.
The cancer is stable, its still there in a lymph node on the side of my neck, hasn't changed much in size and hasn't spread anywhere else. Just cruising along with occasional minor side effects. Last resort I can go under the knife and get the lymph nodes taken out.
-ML
-
Still looking good Marv.
Hang in there bro.

Recent scans show a small tumor in my sinus, seems like this has been there a little while.
Docs want to do a surgical procedure to biopsy it.
Been on the Keytruda drug since 9/2015. Its been working to a degree where the cancer has been mostly kept in check. My oncologist is working on putting a clinical trial together for a combination immunotherapy treatment where they will add two other drugs.
Not sure where this is headed, just wanted to update! Cancer sucks! :)

This is getting interesting. Saw my oncologist today. It turns out the pathology report from the neck biopsy is negative for viable tumor. I got a copy of it.
When i saw,the surgeon on 9/14 he said it was positive for tumor. I suspect he might have seen an old report from two years ago. The latest one is dated 9/14. I will check in with him.
