Title: PIF 2013 Report
Post by: BigJim on July 15, 2013, 06:44:24 AM
WOW!!

What a great time!!

I left Santa Cruz at 530 am with Joe bloodbath and headed up to HMB.  Found dpshim and FishMaster1 spooning in Dan's van, then spent some quality time hanging out with mooch.

Was SOOO happy to see him looking so well and happy. Tremendous improvement since the last time I saw him...the power of love and brotherhood is all I can think of....  :smt008

Not much else I needed to do cuz G-Whiz had the prizes covered, Al and Sara were all over ticket sales and FM1 was directing and coordinating the potluck set up so headed out onto the water.  :smt004

Got to the green buoy and dropped a swim bait....hooked up shortly and was fighting pretty good...comes up...WTF?? Shark!?!  :smt005 Spiny dogfish to be exact!! Cool fish and ton of fun to fight on light tackle!!

Caught several more then we all rafted up for the traditional on the water happy hour.   :smt003

We spent some time talking about the reasons we were out there...about mooch...about shicken...about BigFoot's son Ty...

Then the LIVE ACTION commenced!  Bloodbath showed us all how to do a boat walk, Racinrob hooked up and we all assumed another dogfish...I was floating in the water at the time...dove down to get some footage of the shark...turned out to be a nice Butt!!!!!   :smt007 :smt007

Heartbreaking that it got away, but that's why they call it fishing not catching.  :smt002

Back at the beach started getting nervous about the raffle and speaking in front of so many people...but I could feel the love from the whole crowd and everything worked out great.  :smt004

At the end of the day my voice was gone, my arm was sore from pulling on fish, and we had at last count ~$10,500 raised for Joel!!!!

 :smt007 :smt007 :smt007 :smt007 :smt007

Our most profitable PIF so far!!!!!!  :smt003 :smt004 :smt003

THANK YOU once again to all who came out, donated prizes, bought tickets, or just shared words of encouragement and support.

Special thanks to all the A-Hulls...proud to call you my brothers and sisters.

Love you all!!!!!

 :smt001

Here's my little vid of the paddling shenanigans.  :smt002

ps...my truck is full of prizes won by people who were not there to collect. I will post up a list later today or tomorrow.  :smt004

Jim,, You  and the A-Hulls did an awesome job of bringing this whole thing together to make it such a success.

Also, a sincere thanks to everyone that donated all the wonderful prizes.    It's an honor just knowing you all. :smt006

That big Butt in the middle of the raft has got to be  the funniest and one of the most memorable NCKA moments ever!!
I already knew that RacinRob can catch fish anywhere, anytime but dang man, my rig had to be only a few feet from his and he comes up with a big Butt. the situation was absolutely crazy and it's extremely difficult to try and land a fish like that in those conditions. Only a fisherman of Rob's caliber would have a chance. Next time buddy!  :smt005

Mooch - Awesome to see you out and about!

Awesome time on and off the water. Being a little more sober may have helped in landing that fish. When the fish came off we all just laughed and joked about it. It was worth it. Even the loss of my first butt. We were the to celebrate life, and that's what we did.

At the end of the day my voice was gone, my arm was sore from pulling on fish....

by the time I left my sobriety was diminished and my hand was sore from a couple of BigJim's handshakes :smt003
glad I had a ride :smt002
but I was all smiles. What a wonderful way to wrap up a day of fishing.

Thank you to BigJim, Al & Sara, Glen , and Andy for putting together an awesome shindig. And thanks to all of you (you know who you are) who made me feel like I was at a family reunion. I had some of the best tri tip ever from Fishadow's smoker, and a super yummy grunion from the FM1 fryer (that was hand delivered before I could even open a beer) :smt044.
And even after I had put my plate away, here's comes Fishaow with yet more smoked yumminess from his unending foil pan of goodness. I ate with my hands after that :smt044

All my old peeps were there, the sun was out, Mooch was out, what a fantastic time.

I had a great time, getting to catch with some folks I only see at events.  Watching Fish "fry" Master Andy at work is always inspiring!  Seeing Mooch up and about is always a good thing!  Short Haired Joe was a sight to see, I have to say it gave a good clean look my friend!    The Vwool family was out in force.  Some awesome catches of fish came in, Big Jim retelling the story at least 25 times of that big butt, each telling getting better with time.  Ben cleaning up with the prizes!   Good food, good friends it is what it is all about!

Looks and feels like Good Times.  I wish I could've joined in.  WTG, A-Hulls and all else who contributed.  Great to see Joel enjoying his family.   :smt001

You gotta be kidding that Rob almost lost a 28 pound salmon to that little net and then showed up to fish with it again!   :smt005

I had an AWESOME time hanging with my NCKA Brothers and Sisters and making new friends!  Didn't make it out to the paddle, just hung out with the crew on land, and helped FM1 with some of the cooking.  We smoked the octopus FM1 caught at GS7 and tried to make Tako Poke but it disappeared before we could make poke - it's ok, the tako sashimi was excellent!  Great food, great company and GOOD TIMES!  Love you brother Mooch!  Mad props to the A-Hulls!  MOOCH STRONG!

Once again I'm reminded of the extraordinary generosity and all around good nature of this group. So glad to be a part of it.
As he did with many others, Mooch was the first to welcome me to NCKA and offered to take me out on the water before I got a kayak.
It was great to see you out & about, Joel.

Thanks again to everyone who donated time, prizes, money & effort to make this such a successful event.
Had a great time on the water and off. Thought I'd be lucky to scratch up a rockfish or two out of HMB but ended up with a 33" ling -- who'da thunk it?

Good times rafting up with Big Jim, Bloodbath & the crew. Halibut, Rob, halibut!  :smt004

Such a good time.  Paddled out both days, but didn't catch anything.  Rosylen was a little nervous so we headed back soon after paddling out, but it was her longest two paddles yet, and furthest from shore.

So much good fun and food!!!  Whoever brought the pies, (apple and boysenberry?)- those were super tasty!

The pig!  And Glens leftover concoction was even yummier.

So amazing, the camaraderie.

Special props to Bunny for constantly cleaning up.

We were among the last to leave, and I could only rustle up one handful of trash, (just a couple bottle caps and butts).  Amazing.

Mooch!!!NCKA!!!!!
Mooch was walking around in his element and this was awesome to see.
The love for life and helping others makes this group very special. I am honored to
be a part of this! Thank you everyone.

The boat walk is actually a procedure called "Rafting". Everyone coming together in time of distress
to keep all boats stable and everyone together. The walking part just shows that we are doing it right. They recommend the lightest person doing the walking part, so I volunteered. :smt003
Didn't make it too far because of the Hobie AI without a tramp?! Haha! Let's do it again, volunteers?

Great times at the first PIF for me!
Joel, you are a strong brother, and you looked GOOD bro!
Had the fam with me but still had to sit down at the waterfront to get over the buzz hump that hit fast and hard!
Olivia had a great time at the water, and it was great to introduce the fam to so many of my favorite peeps.
Totally cool to meet a bunch of members that I've only seen online.
The event was flawless with lots of fun all around.
Can't believe that BigJim didn't just spear racinrob's hali while he was gettin go-pro footage, would've done everyone a favor, and wodda got him his devil fish! :smt044
Thanks for a great time!

A huge "Thank You" to all NCKA'ers for allowing me to be the lucky winner of the Grand Prize kayak donated by DpShim.  I am super stoked to have the honor of taking this super kayak home.  I'm also happy that the PIF fundraiser was a success for Mooch.  It sure looked like a fun event.
I'm new to the NCKA community, so I can imagine the sounds of crickets when my name was called at the raffle.  I was on duty that day, so I didn't have a chance to introduce myself to this wonderful group.  The NCKA community has been helpful in my quest for a new kayak after a long hiatus without one.  The OC Trident is exactly what I was looking for and I still can't believe its sitting in my garage.  I popped the hatch and it smelled of many fishing adventures.
I live near China Beach in SF and with this kayak, my days of crabbing off my longboard are over.  I hope to get my first halibut off of Crissy Field or Candlestick this year.  Now that I finally have a kayak, I hope to meet you guys OTW and learn the from the best.

Thank you Big Jim for all the great PIF info and Sara for an awesome message that I won ( the guys at the firehouse were wondering what all the screaming was for at Midnight...), Buzz (Harold) for transporting the yak to a closer pickup spot and helping me load it in my truck.  DpShim(Dan) for his generous donation.  I probably won't catch as much fish, but this is a great start to a new fishing obsession.  And to Mooch, I haven't met you before, but these folks love for you speaks mountains of what kind of person you are.  Hope you enjoy the SFFD swag Buzz is dropping off.
Thanks again!!

A big thanks to Jim and the rest of the A-hulls for cementing Pay It Forward as one of the MUST GO TO EVENTS.  I made the long trek down from Chico to last years event and for sure wasn't going to miss this years.  Sorry I missed the brotherhood time doing the paddle.  I won't let that happen again!

Another fine pot luck with Andy's fried grunion, Kevin's salmon burgers, the smoked octopus, and of course that pig.  I'm sure there was other great food out there but I was too full to make it to everything.

It was good to see everybody and meet some new people.  Mooch thanks for the words of encouragement and convincing me to get back out to Bodega for the Salmon hunt after getting skunked on Friday.  We not only made it out, Non-yak, but I managed to bag my largest ocean salmon to date and we got Vwool on his first PB salmon.

I'm still feeling the after effects of the long weekend but can't wait to do it again next year.

Cheers to all of you and to see everyone at the next event.

Sketchywind aka Frank

Frank rolled up yesterday to pick up his kayak with a huge smile.  Before the raffle, dpshim mentioned to me that he really hoped the kayak would go to someone who needed the kayak and could make use of it... I believe it's found a good home.    :smt003

Here's a pic of the mysterious Sketchywind... as we try to figure out how to fit the kayak into his short-bed pickup.  (We eventually put it in back first, upside down, & strapped heck out of it.)   :smt005

I had an excellent time after a long hiatus off the water.  Thanks Jim and the rest of the crew for the planning and execution.

1 spiny dogfish, 1 black rockfish, 3 kingfish (used as bait).  Also managed to come home with a nasty sunburn acquired while watching the pig dismemberment.

Glad to have a new bunch of friends in the Santa Cruz area to invite out, too!

Thank you so so much for putting this event together, Big Jim, Sara & Al, Dpshim, Glen, & everyone else that helped out & donated!!!
Im ashamed to say this was our very 1st PIF event, but we had a great time.
So awesome to see all the NCKA people gathering & having a good time for a great cause!  Everyone was a little touchy feely, but I loved it! And so great to see Mooch & his family & Marv hanging out having a good time!
Thanks again for making this happen!

I was super bummed having to miss this years PIF, but from the reports, pics and vids,  PIF '13 ROCKED.
Stoked for all that made it, A-Hulls WTG again.  Great seeing a pic of Joel up and about for this.  Yak walking, makin' out with lil' Miss Saharky, Food and more food, big smiles, and one of the funniest sad fish escapes I seen, Bummed for Rob butt  the laughter was infectious.....  and the brotherhood of NCKA shining brightly. Missed ya all, hope see some ya all later this summer.
