I’ve got several farmer John styles from over the years LOVE EM’. 3mil for summer to 7mil for winter. Often worn bellow a dry suit. Most important is Dress for the water temp and dress for immersion

I agree.  If I wore all that, there would be a pool of sweat inside the dry suit.   :smt005

I used to wear a 3mm FJ before moving onto dry suit.

Can those who posted clarify what conditions there are paddling in?  Ocean?  SF Bay?  Time of year?

I was about to post the same question and saw this.  For years I surfed Ocean Beach fall/winter in a 4/3.  Unfortunately, I'm too fat to comfortably wear my old full suits for a day of paddling and want a farmer john.

My thought is that something in the 4/3 range ought to be okay for fishing in the Ocean around SF.  I'm interested in knowing the conditions people use their wetsuits in before I purchase one.

You can have a relief zipper installed in nay farmer john or even do it yourself.

I wore it in the ocean, mostly spring - fall, very occasionally during the winter for crabbing.

As for peeing inside wetsuit, horrible idea unless you're diving and already wet.  Relief zipper is highly recommended unless you like that piss smell all day.   :smt044

I wear a 3/2 farmer john year round in the bay/ocean with booties.  If it's cold I just add some extra layers like a sweatshirt.

I also wear a paddle jacket over everything.

I still get hot with constant pedaling with the 3/2 even in winter.

3/4 mil Oregon ocean no wintertime, bay only wear it  late September through October.

Had a surfer tell me one time to just pee in my wetsuit that’s what he does.... I said go sit on a park bench for 5-6 hours and pee in it!!! He got my point.

Well, by the time I dug down through a dry suit to the wet suit, then fished the cold little feller out, (It's COLD and called SHRINKAGE!)  I'd probably be either pissing all over my hands or flopped out of the kayak anyways.
I'm thinking it's time to diaper up.  A box of Depend undergarments.  I just hope I don't enjoy it and make 'em a habit off the water....

I'm a diver and there is a big difference in peeing in your wetsuit while paddling a yak than diving.
Trust me it's a bad idea if you are going to be out there for a while.

I wear a 6 mil farmer john and carry the top with me just in case it gets bad. If its cold I'll paddle out with the farmer johns all the way up to my shoulders. If its not I only wear them to my waist. It's actually pretty easy to fold the suit down, pull it out and pee.

I can also pull the farmer john over my shoulders and don the top in the water if I ever had to. Just takes some practice.
