Allen (polepole), John (jdyak),  Mike (Sturgy), Joel (Hana), InsaneDuane, Freddie, and I fished off our kayaks while Chris (cpkayak) was on his big boat.

I'll let these guys tell their own stories, but here's the score:

Allen: 27# halibut on live jacksmelt
Chris: 25#+ halibut on jacksmelt
Freddie: 8# striper on a live shiner
Joel: 6.5# striper on jacksmelt
Me: 5# striper on a shiner
John: 5# striper (released) on trolled lure

Most were caught about a 1/4 mile straight out between 9:00 and 9:30am.

The water was flat calm till about 11:30, then the wind kicked up hard from the west.  That's when we decided to call it quits.  Joel had BBQ hotdogs and sodas waiting for us at his tailgate.  Thanks Joel!

So I got to the launch around 8.  Saw InsaneDuane gearing up and leaving the harbor.  Joel showed up shortly after and here comes Chuck with a load of nice bait he made the night before.  I paddle out to InsaneDuane while the other guys are gearing up.  I rig up and troll for the butts with flasher and chovie.  After a while I pull up on Chuck and he offers up some bait.  Sure thing!  He tosses a few in my new tank courtesy of scwafish.  Thanks Chuck.  And thanks Sean for the bait tank, it worked just nicely on her maiden voyage.  I drop in a smelt and here comes Freddie.  As Chuck is giving Freddie some bait his rod goes bendo.  Woohoo!  Hey Fred, come here and rub some of that luck off on me.  My rod goes twitch.  Maybe there is something to "Freddie luck".  I feed some line ... twitch, twitch ... engage the reel ... nothing ... reel reel reel ... my line comes tight and goes down hard.  I'm ON!  In the meantime Chuck reels in a striper and I'm thinking we got hit by a school.  But my line takes off and now I'm thinking this is no striper.  After about 15 minutes of tug-o-war, up comes this  PIG.  I slide her in my brand new net that I bought last night.

For scale reference, the "Cobra Triple" caption on my boat is 48" across.  She went almost 27# ... good enough for me to call her 27.  Chef would have called her 26# 12.288 ounces.  :smt003

And here's me holding her.

After I got her in the net I pulled her up sideways on my legs.  She sat nice and calm.  But Chuck was concerned about my well being and yells "HIT HER" ... whap! ... "AGAIN" ... whap whap .. "ANOTHER TIME" ... whap ... "AGAIN" ... whap.  She settled down nicely after that barrage and I slid her in my hold.  She came to life 20 minutes later so obviously Chuck should have yelled "AGAIN" again.

During the fight everyone else comes up on us.

And later Joel hooks into a striper.

Good time had by all and finished up with some hot dogs that went down well after the paddle back with a headwind ... courtesey of Joel.  Thanks Joel.

Nice report guys.

Joel,
Thanks for the striper bro.  We are steaming it tomorrow.  Call me up if you want to have dinner in SJ at my mom's house. :smt016

PS,
My buddy who called you (chuck) from the rockwall ran over to Hunters Pt/Candlestick and landed about 15 stripers from 5-10lbs and 1 8lb butt.  Said the bite went off in the afternoon.  They used $25 live chovies!!!!!!

Thanks for the report! I'm very happy for all of you.The bite has been slow at Santa Cruz.  Does Oyster Point charge a launching fee for Kayaks and, how much is a all day Parking fee?

Barney = Oyster Point directions:
http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=670

Ernie = *park and launch is free* When you drive towards the ramp you will see a flag pole on the right hand side - park across it and you will see a paved walk way that leads you to a small launch ramp - used by wind surfers & yaks.

Chuck = thanks for the pics and especially for providing us all with quality live bait  :smt023

Congrats to Allen for being the "lunker plunker" of the day  :smt002

Good times fellas!!  :smt002

How did you guys make bait by the harbor.  Or did you pay for the shiners.  1.50 each seems steep at the bait shop.

Jason - lucky for us - on Saturday, Chuck made bait (with his cast net) for the crew the night before somewhere in San Leandro.

But on Sunday, we had to buy live bait from the baitshop (we cleaned them out) . Jeff however, was able to make bait on the "shit hole" location using a sabiki set up. I believe Dave has the GPS coordinates. I later saw what Jeff had on his tank well and these bait were HE-UGE!!!   :smt118 (shiners & smelt)

I believe Dave has the GPS coordinates.

Thanks to JeffW for sharing his bait spot - hopefully he won't mind me posting the coordinates.

37° 39.917N
122° 21.746W

You'll know you're close by the smell.  You can also see an upwelling, and want to start a drift up current from that.
