SteveS and I slayed quite a few surf perch at Stinson today.  I estimate about 30 fish each.  It started out slow, but we soon got dialed in to the right spots and the right grubs to use.  At one point, we got so spoiled, we were expecting a fish with every cast... and if we didn't get bit by the 3rd cast, we moved to another spot.

I kept my limit of five including a few smaller one that were hooked deep. The bigger ones were about 11 to 12 inches.  Steve and I  both released a few slabs that were a lot bigger.

At first, we were just looking for rips, then we noticed the the best fishing was where the bottom was gravel with small rocks.  There was less sand in the surf thus the water clarity was better... which help the fish find our grubs.

The best grub was a 1-1/2" Kalin Motor Oil w/ Red Flake on a #8 hook.  I also slid a small orange bead on my leader as an attractor.

The next most popular grub (not pictured here) was a 1" PowerBait nymph in "toad" color.  It simulated a small gray sand crab or shrimp.

One important tip -- fish the grub very slow, draggin it across the bottom only about a foot at time.  The slower - the better.

We saw a few other guys fishing for perch with live shrimp and worms.  They were completely surprised that we out-fished them using artificial grubs.

Steve... thanks for showing me your favorite spots at Stinson.  I had a blast!

Great Job Chuck/Steve, I've been monitoring all night waiting for your hot setup.  Wasn't sure if it was artificials or livebait?  I'll probably head out there tomorrow early if you want to hit it again?  I might also try Rodeo beach (Fort Cronkite-through tunnel) , I found this spot that might have some rockfish?

Nice fish man!  What species are those?  One kinda looks like a redtail and the others barred.  Did you guys catch any other species out there?

Thanks... I think they're barred surfperch and walleye surfperch.  Steve caught a small redtail.

was a really fun day-- thanks for the company Chuck.   I stopped down at the tackle shop on the way home to pick up some of those little nymphs...very nice.  There's also a power crab that looks promising.

Looks like a blast.  I have never really tried that, but I might have to now.  Looks like something that would be great to do with the kids.  I remember my dad fishing for redtails and we would be amazed when the females would dump a load of live young.

Did you eat any?  I made tacos out of the striped perch I shot and they were actually pretty good.

Perch is excellent for fish tacos, fried, or any way you wanna cook'em.  It was one of my favorites as a kid.

Joel, I think this is your kind of fishing since it's a lot of casting, plenty of action, and the fish are not too big for you to handle :smt003
