What an awesome ocean it was today!  So smooth and no wind.  Too bad the salmon weren't biting.  We got to the Cove at around 2PM and talked to a few power-boaters who had not done well--a couple of fish between them.  We trolled anchovies for an hour and a half or so with one fish on then off again.  It was so nice out though--great 4-5 mile paddle out to the bell then the whistle and back around.  It was tough not being able to drop a lead-head for a rockfish...  hope the lingcod are having a good spawning season!

Abking- how long of a drive is it from the main Hwy out to Shelter Cove?  I'm definetly going to do some serious rockfishing out of there this year.  I'm just curious so I can plan my attack- camp there, head back? you know the usual BS.  Can't wait.

Ditto on the Salmon updates too! :fishing2

Also if you ever get a chance to bring a camera I'm sure I'm not the only one that would love to see some pic's of the place and the bouys you paddle out to.

catch one for us all!

Ken

The drive from 101 at Garberville is about 45 minutes, but it's narrow, winding, and goes over a couple of passes...  There is a campground that is basically a grass parking lot full of fishermen--not the most natural and pretty campground ever, but the ocean there makes up for it.  Abs are easy picking, salmon, rockfish, halibut...  the place is awesome when the ocean is flat.  The scenery from the water is tops--Lost Coast stretches to the north and the New Lost Coast (Sinkyone Wilderness area) stretches to the south.  I will try to post a couple of pics.
