Im thinking of booking my first tuna trip to Mexico or Central America this summer/ fall. I've never done it before and would appreciate any input from those who have. I'm not really interested in Marlin or billfish/sailfish, just tuna and Dorado. Any input on good locations, operators, or hotels would be super appreciated!

Have you thought about the San Diego long range fleet?

Was just throwing that out there. I think I'd much rather go to Panama since you mentioned South America.

Also check out the SD long range boats that run out of PV, Mexico during certain times of the year.

Check out the royal Polaris I hear it's a great boat and great crew to roll with.

If you go the Long Range route out of S. D. then I would highly suggest the Intrepid. Also, are you specifically wanting to catch 200lb tuna or would you be happy catching any tuna? If you just want to pull on any size tuna and possibly some dorado you could jump on one of the 2.5 or 3.5 day trips during the fall for a pretty good shot at smaller YFT, dorado, YT, and even BFT. If you want to catch giants I would recommend either fishing out of PV on a 3 day trip or taking a 10 - 16 day trip out of SD (or going to Panama).

A few of us are taking an 8 day trip in October that should be a blast (http://www.norcalkayakanglers.com/index.php?topic=83153.0). I'm hoping for variety over size, though, as pulling on giant tuna isn't really fun for me. I'd rather catch dorado, wahoo, and sub 100lb tuna on surface irons or poppers.

The 3 SD long range boats that run out of Puerto Vallarta during certain months are the Success, Apollo, and the Constitution. You can actually do a search for those boat names on NCKA and get some info. Alan Tani and a few others have posted reports here.
