I’m new to the board and am seeking advice on buying my first kayak, mostly for ab diving and spearing on the north coast and also for fishing in both salt and freshwater.  I’m leaning toward the Ocean Kayak Trident 13 or the T15 based on the recommendations of other divers who like the hatch arrangement and storage capacity for weight belt, spearguns, fins, abs, fish, etc.
Does anyone have experience diving and fishing out of both yaks and have opinions to offer?   Ryan at Clavey Paddlesports in Petaluma explained that the extra length of the T15 helps in speed and tracking in the ocean.  Are there any significant downsides to the slightly bigger T15? I’m 5’ 10” and about 210 if that matters.
Thanks,
Dave

I got the T13 mostly for off the water issues, mostly length/storage, then there's transport vehicle rack arrangement, maybe a few pounds here and there, and just moving something 15 ft long is a little more difficult than something 13 ft long.

I dive and fish a T15. Plenty of room, paddles great and has room for all my crap. I like to take ab gear, speargun, freedive fins, fishing poles, net, etc and there is plenty of room and it still rides well. I'm 6'2" and 225. Plenty of room for me. Only thing I think it does need is a rudder. I do not have one and I have had a trailing wind push me around. I have also paddled a 13, just a bit of storage difference in the rear tankwell, otherwise almost identical paddler area.

The only downside is that it weighs around 10 pounds more on the average. What you gain in storage capacity in the rear well coupled with being a tad faster makes the weight disparity negligible. I have had 3 T13's and 5 T15's. They have come and gone as the years went by but I still have one of each. I have paddled all over without a rudder and its always been manageable. I think Clavey has a couple left in stock. Other than that Adventure Sports in Sac has bought all remaining 15's from the factory. The 15 is looking to be reintroduced with serious upgrades in 2016 or 2017. Hopefully. I love these kayaks. I have one of each that you can borrow for the day to check it out. Im in Petaluma. T15 is an awesome dive yak for sure.

I've had fun diving/paddling the t13 but at 250 pounds the paddling performance on the 15 was noticeabley better for me than the 13....

Can't really go wrong though...both solid yaks with great features...try and paddle both before hand so you can decide for yourself which one you prefer?

Good luck!

I'm 240+ and paddle a T13, If I expect to catch 40 lbs of fish I minimize gear. For me the shorter size is a plus for storage and transportation. The kayak is fast and low to the water both pluses, in freshwater I feel like the biggest boat OTW, in a 15 it would be more so. If I were 210 I'd be crapping in tall cotton. You wouldn't be unhappy with either.  Go on and get one, Amos
Ps. I'm in Rosa and have an extra, message me I will get you in one.

Gentlemen, thanks for the insights and the generous offers to try out your yaks. I plan to paddle both before making a decision.
cheers,
Dave

Hey Dave, nice to meet you the other day...I was the guy with the T13 launching at China Camp. Either way you go, I'm sure you'll be happy!

Do you have any other info regarding the coming T15 ?
I like the new rod pod on the thresher, but won't trade my T140 due to its weight. I hope the new coming T15 is not as heavy as WS kayaks.

I'd thought the Trident Ultra 4.7 was the new version of the Trident 15, but I guess it's not. According to the OK website the 4.7 weighs 87 pounds, but at 400-450 lbs its max capacity is less than the T15.

87lb is ridiculous. My T140 is 68lb and I wish I buy a EC 14 when I see a guy lift it with 1 hand after the trip while I was carrying it with skunkasaurus up the stair.

The 4.7 was designed in NZ. They brought the molds out here to save shipping costs. All sit on tops that are poly and close to 16' are in the high 80's. Except. The  Trident 15.

Any idea why the T15 was discontinued?

Regarding weight: Several sites show the weight of the T13 as 56 lbs, but the OK site lists the T13 at 67 lbs. Yet the T15 is listed at 60 lbs? Are these numbers to be believed?
