Title: Best knot I have seen for Braid to Mono
Post by: The X Inn Keeper on March 25, 2010, 11:42:58 AM
This is the knot we use in the store.
If tied correctly it has proven to be very strong and trustworthy
We have had customers catch fish over 300lbs with this knot.

1-Take mono and fold in half
2-Put braid through fold and give yourself plenty of line for knot
3-Wrap braid evenly around Mono 8 times
4-Wrap Braid back down evenly 8 times
(Make sure to cross each wrap evenly)
5-Pull both ends of Braid evenly so as not to ball up Braid on Mono
6-Tie a couple half hitches in Braid
7-Trim loose ends
(Pictures to follow)

Eric, I've started using the albright almost exclusively, do you have an opinion on that one?  I like how easily it goes through my rod guides.

Thanks for the info, i'll give it a shot!  Looks easy, like a one side UNI knot?

Starting with the second picture, it's hard for me to tell what is on top and what is on bottom.

I'd love to learn it though because I don't know knots to save my life.

Sorry about the pics.
I tried to post from my camera (on the lowest res) but the site said the file was to large, even for 1 pic.
The main thing is to wrap evenly 8 up than cross each wrap on the way down so they make perfect X's - if they aren't even than the knot will fail. Also be sure to keep the mono from twisting or you may have the same result.

looks similar to the albright except you are wrapping up instead of just starting on top.  and the half hitches.  i can't see those, how do they affect the knot?

The half hitches help taper the end but aren't really necessary

Thanks.  It's hard for me to get the Albright right at home, impossible to do so on the water, I hope this one's easier.

That's the knot I use except without the half hitches.  I will have to try it with the half hitches to see how much of a difference they make.  I have heard the knot called the Alberto Knot or modified Albright.  I find it is reasonably easy to tie on the water.

This knot was featured on "knot wars" today. They called it the improved albright. I won today against the J knot, and goes on to take on the  double uni next week that was toted to be the strongest for braid to mono last year. I'll give this one a try. They did mention it's important to put the tag back in the same way the first one came out. Last year before I went on the Islander trip I messed around with several knots and the one that seemed to be the most consistant winner for me was when I tied a double uni but I doubled the braid to reduce the line cutting factor. Only problen is it can be a pain to tie.

Here's the same knot from a site I copied in 2005 with this modified Albright "Alberto" knot, easy to see the wraps:

http://www.stripersonline.com/Pages/Articles/article_arby_albertos_knot.shtml

However, am I just clumsy or is there some trick to: a. making sure the mono loop doesn't flip over in your fingers as you do the braid wraps, and b. to keep the braid wraps from bunching up on each other so you can't tell where each one is on the way back down the loop?   Do I just need to practice more?

I just use larger braid to avoid cutting. 65 pound PowerPro braid to 30 pound mono/flouro and 50 lb. braid to 17-20 lb. mono/flouro. I have to think of braid in terms of diameter, not pound test. When I match line diameters I eliminate cutting. 50 pound PowerPro will slice through 30 pound mono "Like Butta". I love the Uni to Uni. I even use the Uni on hooks and swivels now.
