Was bottom trolling at Capitola last weekend with a rod in the forward rod holder and hooked a shark. The gear track popped off on the takedown and I almost lost a $400 rod/reel combo. As it turns out, the tracks are only glued in. Any thoughts about bolting them on?

I have a 2014 14' and my tracks have screws in them. Maybe they have already made adjustments.

Thanks for the feedback Scott. I have contacted Eddyline regarding the issue. I will let you know what I hear.

Talked to eddyline. Older versions were glued newer ones are glued and screwed in with nylon bolts to back.

That's what I was thinking. Scott has one of the first Eddyline Caribbean's when it was still called t he Calypso. I know they have made changes since then and I believe that was one of them. I haven't gotten a response from Eddyline yet, but it sounds like you did.

Scott can you get to the tracks from the front hatch?

Scott,

I know your handy, but if you need any help bolting them on we would be happy to do the install for you at no charge. You got one of the very first boats we brought in, and since then they have addressed this issue.

Thanks Dan. I should have it done by the weekend.

In case you were wondering, here is how the factory version looks like on my Caribbean 14 kayak.  Looks like 5 bolts,  5 black plastic washers, 5 aluminum washers and 5 nuts.

But wait!   Don't you have the Caribbean 12 Scott?

Hell yeah I got the the shark and it was a big one. Released it unharmed of course and got my Tady Jig back too.  :smt003 :smt003.

Thanks for the info guys. I used per track:
Four #6/32 SS Flat Head Bolts
One #6/32 Pan Head Bolts
Five #6 Nylock Nuts
Five Oversize SS Wahers
One #6 SS Washer
U-40 Rod Bond Paste Epoxy

I mount my rod holders at the forward end of the track so put 2 bolts about 1" apart at both ends to provide maximal support. I used a pan head bolt at the forward end to prevent sliding the track mount too far forward onto the hull at the front of the track which is higher than the track. This means if you slide the attachment too far forward, it is pushing down on the hull and up on the track. This was the reason for the initial track separation. The glue failed adhesion on the track side not the hull so I sanded the track lightly to improve adhesion. The forward bolts can be reached from the front hatch and the rear bolts from the center hatch. It is a fairly easy retrofit. You do need a #6 countersink. I am confident the track will not fail again.

Eddyline should be proactive and recall the early models with glued in tracks only. I was lucky I didn't lose a rod an reel. If it was the other track I would have lost my sonar, GPS rod and reel. Over $1,000 worth of equipment. Just my 2 cents.

A few months ago I have test paddled, Elusive's (Don) Caribbean 14.  I noticed the gear tracks flexes when I applied pressure on it.

Can these now handle heavy trolling like using a deep six or 8 oz weight?

For that application we suggest using a Yak attack Scotty mount track adapter. This spreads the load and also allows the base to stabilize on the boat instead of just the track. I can post a photo later when I get to work. But the answer is yes, several customers have used this setup with success. Want more security? Install a GT90 medal track with backer plates. Probably over kill, but it would be super solid.
