Jed,
Can you pick up some shiners for me?  I can pay you for them when we launch.  I'll bring my live well.

Looks like a great solution.  I think I'll forget about trying to stow the drive in the hatch.  Thanks for the pics!

I have a Revo with turbo fins but have never been in the kelp.  The drive can be stowed in the front hatch and the plug can be put in the slot.  It wouldn't be too difficult to take out the plug and put the drive back in at any time as long as you're not in really rough water.  Stability would be the only limiting factor.  Paddling with the fins in the up position seems to work fairly well.  I have paddled in the shallow water and grass at the Delta but that is probably different from kelp in the Ocean.  It has worked fine for me but I have only done it for short distances to get free from the grass and into deeper water.

Could it be Cow Cod?

Newb,
Another good approach is to arrange to meet on a specified VHF channel like #69.  If I'm ready to launch, I usually put in when ready and meet the crew on the water.  Nobody likes to hang around at the ramp.  Could the guys you were going to meet already be out on the water fishing?

General Talk / Re: Online data storage/backup recommendations?

I use external harddrives and Windows Live One Solution to manage automatic backups.  I recently lost a computer to a power spike and was able to recover and install all of my backed up files and data to a new machine quickly and easily.  My external drives are attached to my network and back up all of our machines.  I use Cisco's Network Magic to manage the network and all of the attached devices.  It's a great piece of software and not very expensive.

General Talk / Re: Sail Away

I have one too and it works great.  I used to use it on an Outfitter tandem and it didn't work nearly as well as it does with the Revo.  I'm upgrading my drive fins later this week which is supposed to make the sail work even better.  The sail is a great way to get back to the launch area after a long day of peddling.  The wind at Del Valle always blows back toward the docks in the afternoon if you fish the dam area.

Guys,
I'm not going to get bait at Mike's this time.  They don't open until 7:00.  Last week when I fished the rock wall, the guys who were getting the butts were all using frozen bait.  I had live shiners but no luck with the fish.  I'm going to try the frozen Herring this time.  I have a live well for my yak and can bring it if it would help those with the live bait.  It works really well and the bait will last all day.  I'll throw it in the car just in case anybody wants me to transport the live ones.

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Cuda 300 FF Pros/Cons?
« on: May 21, 2009, 09:54:59 AM »
I have the same unit on my Revo.  It seems to work fine.  The only concern I have is the potential for corrosion on the connection when used in salt.  I make it a habit to spray some WD-40 on the cable end and the back of the unit each time it gets used.  I'm hoping this will prolong the life.  The Magellan unit I had before, had a much tighter waterproof, locking connection.  However, it died when short circuited with salt water.  ????????

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Transducer issues
« on: May 21, 2009, 09:50:29 AM »
I did the same install on my Hobie Revo directly behind the mast mount.  It's a little difficult to pour water in the opening because the mast mount kind of blocks the access but it has worked well.  I can still throw stuff in the front hatch without being concerned that I'll hit the transponder since the mast mount blocks the mounting block.  I cut up an old Morey Boogie board instead of the pool noodle so that I could get get a big enough piece to hold the transponder.  It holds water all day and the screen provides a nice clean image.  The only down side is the temperature readings are way off.  I think the only way to get correct water temperature reading is to externally mount the transponder.

General Talk / Re: Hook-ups for the retired...

Mooch,
As one of the retired guys, I don't see any real need for a separate hook-ups area.  I admit that I like to fish during the week when it's less crowded but there are lots of guys who take days off during the week to fish.  The current hook-ups post works great as is.

Island Yak,
What time do you plan on launching?  I'll meet you at the launch.

Darius,
We may not make it Friday afterall.  Dave is unable to make it and I won't fish the Bay solo.
We have Hobie kayaks which are much more costly than the budget you mentioned.

Hookups and Fishing Reports (Viewable by Public) / Friday 5/22 ARW
« on: May 18, 2009, 06:46:43 PM »
After a disappointing attempt last Friday, Hobie Dave and I are going to hunt the Butts at ARW again this week.  We will launch at around 7:30.  I'm going to skip the expensive live bait this time and try the frozen bait that seemed to work so well for the guys on the party boats last week and the yakers on Sunday. We will monitor channel 69.  Company welcome!  I won't be bringing the usual "home brew" since the refrigerator has hit empty.  I bottled a new batch today but it won't be ready to drink for two weeks.  I guess the celebratory toast will have to be store bought.  As long as we catch the dinner, it's ok to buy the beer.
