Ah man, in a OK Drifter? I hope he didn't wreck.   Just to note, one of the coolest places to kayak i have seen is Black Point Beach, 20 minutes north of Salt Point State Park.  You need a more agreesive surfing kayak, but the ride is killer.  It is not for beginers, that is for sure.  You do not get the nice little breakers that you might somewhere else.  I'll post a few photos.

I took that photo on the morning of Superbowl Sunday. Jim did not dump it. He was teaching a surf skills class, not coming back from fishing. The only time he was off his yak was when he was showing his students how to self-rescue. One time he even went over the falls backwards, on purpose, and braced his way out of it.

Jim knows what he is doing in the surf.

You guys launch in double overhead? This was a big day for our home waters at La Jolla Shores. Lots of guys saw the conditions, went home, and turned on the pregame show instead. Not all though.

Maybe I should upgrade to a prowler then when I've got space for it.  I learned how to brace with my festiva but bracing in the Drifter invites doom.

Or maybe I can fill most of the cockpit with foam inserts.  That might make the thing float when water washes over it...

wow!! impressive that he made it in unscathed.

98% (including me for sure) would be washing up on shore looking for the pieces!!

I'm not very good with sizing waves but that wave is typical in Linda Mar (which can get even bigger when there is a minus tide) and I believe Bean Hollow gets even bigger.  :surf

There are many other beach launches that I'd like to try this year (in and around the Half Moon Bay area)...the problem is that the surf is big most of the time...if I can just find a window of opportunity, I would definitely like to explore the fishing.......places like Pacifica and Montara Beach.

I agree with you Hana... that last trip to Linda Mar was pretty huge... I'd say probably twice as big as that picture with Jim...

If I remember correctly, on the way out you earned the nickname "dead man paddling" for almost getting eaten by a rogue breaker that came up when you were way out there.   Cowboy up baby!!!

Coming in, I earned the nickname "wet man floundering" for obvious reasons.

The old Malibu II just doesn't like being pushed by a wave... I should practice my bracing though to see how much I could handle if I had good technique.

The day I went to linda mar it was relatively laid back.  Maybe 24" surf.  I think joel is sizing up the wave in the photo as if Jim were a diminutive filipino.

...the shame of dumping was temporary but it's definitely not the way to impress the chicks  :smt011 I should have worn my speedos to make up for the disaster  :smt082
