Title: AOTY at Fred Hall
Post by: mickfish on February 18, 2007, 09:28:31 PM
Got to the show at about 10:45 after talking to Joel on the phone. Joel said to call him when I got there and he would get me a pass. When I got there I kept getting his V/Mail. So I figured he left my pass a Will call I showed them my ID and the lady gave me an envelope with a VIP Pass, when I got inside and Joel said he didn't leave one I looked at the envelope and it said Mike Mark not Mike Moltchanoff (Moltch) oops sorry Mike. When i got to the booth it looked great but Joel couldn't stop talking about this Girl i thought cool maybe I do have a shot at AOTY 2007. Then when I saw I didn't blame mooch at all.

It was cool hanging with and good to see everybody not to mention the very nice VS spinning reel I won thanks Bill and Rik. bill you where sorely missed it wasn't the same without you. But when Sean arrived with the Trophy's WOW there were beautiful and I kicked myself in the A$$ for not trying harder. Nice work Sean.

And Mark Ty is so cool

I wish that I had more time at the show to talk to some of the guys and check out the exhibits. I took the family up to the City in the morning. We went to Pier 39 and did the tourista thing. The boys had a ball. Little did I know... the Tour de California was going on. The Embarcadero was jacked. It took forever to get from there to the Cow Palace. Got there in time though. Unfortunately, Bill was laid out with the flu. I picked up the reels from him in the morning and had them in Chuck's hand in time for the awards presentation. It was really nice running into a bunch of you guys that I haven't seen since the last Elk tourney. It was great catching up and all. The plagues that Sean made are really AWESOME!!! My son Evan doesn't want to give it back to daddy though. Thanks for putting in the time to make those. Also, thanks to Rik and Okuma for putting up some great reels. All in all... I had a great time and I look forward to fishing with a bunch of you guys in the coming year.

Sean- Bill gave me a computer to give to you... I still have it though. Hopefully, I can get up there and hit the Russian sometime soon and get it up to you.

Congratulations to all the winners and participants.  The award ceremony was very cool and those trophies are awesome....great work.

I'd never been to a Fred Hall show but I'm really glad I went to this one...the show in general was pretty cool but the kayaking part of it was awesome.
The couple of seminars I was able to attend were awesome, great job Sean and Allen.  Mooch is of course a natural people person who seemed to really feel at home talking to the people who came by asking questions.  That crab trap setup that Insane Duane has on his yak is awesome.

It was really great meeting a few of the board members and getting to ask questions of the experts.  Can't wait to meet up with more of the board members soon, on the water.

Me and the boys got up at 0-dark-30 (OK, so it was only 7:00) and wolfed down some grub before headin' to The Show. Pulled into the parking lot about 9:30 and after listening to that very annoying promo loop over the loudspeaker, my youngest was ready to climb the building and rip the wires from the speakers. We were the second group thru the door and things started great when my now gumpy young one got a free Okuma hat right away.

We wandered around the main floor for a few minutes and then made a beeline to the booth. Got there and recognized Mooch from all the world famous pix of him here. He hadn't even had a chance to put on his very official looking shirt. (btw, very nice talking with you this morning Joel) After spendin about 15 minutes talking with him, my boys were asking me when we were going to fish the ocean. Yikes, I told them I didn't think inexperienced yakkers in a tandem would be a pretty site launching in surf.

OK dad, then can we go to the next Bendo at Mendo? (Dang, Mooch, you are a smooth talker.) That idea, I said sounded more reasonable. And hey, since it also involves camping, it's right up our alley.

We also sat in on a few presentations. Learned a ton in a very short time. Didn't get to stay as long as we wanted. Here's the kicker....as we're going by the NCKA booth for the last time, my youngest says, "So dad, when are you gonna win one of those cool trophies?"

Thanks to all those who helped make the event possible. It was a great way to spend time with my boys talking fishing AND kayaking, although I could've done with out the trophy smack. :smt003

Not sure whch impresses me more; how much contortion the human body can withstand or how AWESOME those trophies look?!?!
I am not a big fan of trophies but that would be something I would proudly display. Truly a work of art.
Very nice job. Congratulations to all the participants and hats off to the winners.
Now I am off to try to score some points...umm.....I mean.....Catch some fish!!!!

Thanks Mick for posting  " The Mascot ", I was there for 4 days and never got to see her show  :smt010 :smt013

I truly feel that the Kayak Center was the best/ most interesting part of the show, and thanks to all who made that possible.

May NCKA always be the helpful and generous group that we are today.... :smt004.....Danglin

I agree with Danglin - the kayak fishing center was the highlight of the show (ok, the indoor wakeboard competition and the dock dogs were a close 2nd/3rd!).  The amount of camaraderie could really be sensed by those just checking out the sport for the first time!  Chuck, Joel, Allen and Sean acted as great embassadors for the sport.  I wished I could have spent more time at the booth (next year, I go one day by myself and one day with the family).  I am now inspired to get out on the water more in 2007!  Here's to another great year for NCKA!

Thanks for taking those great pics Mickfish! I agree that Chuck, Joel, and Sean were the best represetatives NCKA could have asked for. For me, the highlights of Sunday's show were the presentations by Sean White and Allen Bushnell, checking out Duane's "insane" crabbing setup, and just endless chatting about kayaks and fishing with everyone. It was all topped off be a beautiful winter evening drive home on the 1.
It was really great to meet so many of you and put faces to the screen names.
Thanks for the compliments on the awards!

I personally want to thank Joel for being there all 5 days of the show plus helping me the two extra two nights days before the show to help set up our booth and the kayak fishing center.  He was at the show early every day to make sure our booth was manned and looking good.  He did an excellent job greeting show goers and answering their questions.

I want to thank Sean White (and his supportive family) for making the long drive from Ukiah do his "rockfish" and "rigging" seminars all 4 days.  I'm sure that wasn't easy.

Similarly, I want to thank Erik Kunz for being there the same 4 days for his awesome sturgeon seminar.

Erik and Sean had some the most imformative and professional Powerpoint presentations I have ever seen in a fishing show.  You guys are true pros!

Thanks to Allen Bushnell for his seminars as well.  Allen's seminar on Sunday was practically standing room only.  I think it was the most attended seminar of the entire show.

On Sunday... I was a little stressed out about the AOTY presentations which I had to wing since Bill had the flu and couldn't make it to the show.   But when Freddie volunteered to pick up the Okuma reel prizes from Bill and Sean "piscean" showed up with his absolutely beautiful handmade awards, I knew everything was going to be more than cool.  And just like Mickfish, if I only knew in advance that those plaques were the part of the prizes for the top 3 places, I would have competed harder.

And finally, I want to thank all of the NCKA'ers who attended the show and dropped by the kayak fishing center to say hello and show their support by soaking in our seminars.  I know there were a few members there who I still didn't get a chance to meet.  I look forward to meeting you all OTW.

At the end of the show, Duane (who also brought in his pimped out yak) and JTF helped us breakdown and haul everything away.  A big thanks to both of them!!!

-Chuck

I wish I could of spent more time @ the NCKA booth, hopefully the time I spent @ CC&K @ the Cow Palace and ISE Sacramento will show in tourney prizes and raffle stuff....I talked to a ton of people about NCKA from the CC&K booth and was able to work on other things that should benefit NCKA for the future...Not sure I would do this again this way, I did not really get to enjoy the show or the NCKA seminars, I was pretty busy....Waaa......Danglin

Thanks ChuckE :smt002

Don't usually beg for a pat on the back, but tring to " Tight Rope Walk " and feel out what these people/sponsors can or will do for us, has been exhausting..

I also got a taste of what has changed So Cal into what it is today. Different KayakFishing web sites and "Real Trash" talk between different factions. It all comes down to " $ ". Different kayakfishermen/women being sponsored by different manufacturers. Competition for sponsors and the list and circumstances goes on and on. As we become bigger and manufacturers become more interested in us ( NCKA ), it is going to be up to us to keep our integrity and comraderie.

Not to say we tell sponsors to go away, just realized that there really is not any big money or glory in any of it, and the best thing we can do is to be as Spock in Star Trek 2 states:

" The Good of the Many, Outweighs the Good of the Few... "

Star Trek 2, Wrath of Khan

Don't mean to be so dramatic, but I love this sport, and I'm probably the worst one as to finding out about sponsors and such (With the intent of boosting our prize offerings). But after talking to Spike, Jim Sammons, Mike Lowery and others who have been doing this for a long time, it's clear to me that we do have something special here right now.

It's up to all of us to keep it that way,

See Ya on the Water......... :smt006.......Danglin

Indeed...big money and kayak fishing are simply not happening anytime soon.  Not only for sponsorship etc., but in all aspects of the sport.  Most of the So Cal squabbling is over what really amounts to peanuts.  The group mojo that we currently have is worth way more.  If you remember that you got into it because its fun, and keep doing it because its fun, you're on the right track.

If you want to fish and make money, buy a bass boat and win some tourneys. If you wanna have fun, you're in the right spot.

Absolutely!  (what Sean said)

First of all... This was a great show and I really enjoyed being there, meeting many of you for the first time, and just being immersed in fishing for a few days.  Likewise, I really appreciate all of the folks who spent their time at the show and created such a buzz over in our little corner of the facility.  Piscean... you have outdone yourself with the plaques this year.  I can't wait to pick mine up from Sean.  Very generous of you.

Now... back to what Sean said... which begs a larger question and some thought on the part of some of the leaders of our NCKA community.

It is apparent to myself and others, that what we have here is unique, and it is unique because it is not hindered or tainted by competing commecial interests.  The success of this board is due purely to the enthusiasm of it's members for this sport that we enjoy so much.  We speak freely to promote or criticize any product that we may encounter.  We use our ingenuity to develop creative solutions to problems that are not met by any commercial product.  We spend time promoting the sport simply because we enjoy seeing others pursue some of the incredible experiences we have all had.

From a marketing standpoint, I think we have a lot to offer to the manufacturers and the businesses that provide products and services to this sport.  If we like something, we talk about it and share it with others.  We share our ideas, innovations, and feedback openly.  At a show like this, we create a focal point of enthusiasm for the sport of kayak fishing that all of these manufacturers and retailers can equally tap into.

The question is, what should be in it for us... and not for us individually, but for our community as a whole?  I'll gladly put on seminars and hang out at the booth again at future shows, but I'd like to ensure that NCKA is getting something out of it.

In the future, I'd like to see some inflow of resources from the manufacturers and retailers that benefit from our presence in the form of (1) financial support to NCKA.org to keep this website operating and pay for little things like banners, promotional items, etc., (2) commitments to donate prizes in sponsorship of tournaments and/or raffles, and (3) possibly even some reimbursement for expenses (not income per se) for some of those who are putting on seminars and working the show so that they can do so without spending so much WAF in the process  :smt002.

I'd be interested in hearing other thoughts on this.

This is part of why I burnt a lot of gas and WAF over the weekend.  So far, for the events that we host, I have felt some love from the Mfgs. we sell have been pretty supportive of our tourneys.  We usually get at least one boat, we had three at Elk, and the raffles are generally pretty good too....Surf to summit and other always step up.  Okuma also really stepped up so I was there returning some love.  That said it could always be better, and I think having some of the So Cal interests see our scene this weekend won't hurt.

Quote

While this would be great, for the most part the precedent has been set by folks anxious to do it for free...or less!!  So when Chuck asked, I knew there would be no cash involved.  But again, NCKA has been always great to GWKC, so none expected either, more karma to repay.

For the rest of folks who don't have a business it would be nice, but for the most part I don't see it happening, at least not yet.  It will probably happen eventually, but it will be Jelly's generation, not mine.

Beyond that it was really nice seeing everybody we fish with, customers from the past, guys form Coastside etc.  It was really interesting seeing some folks I have never seen without waders or a wetsuit on.  I barely recognized a well groomed and dapper looking Bob Neal...without the Scamp, the Scupper,  and the smaell of neoprene...I was like..."you look familiar  :smt017 :smt017..have we met??

Although I was tired as heck by the end, I had a great time.  I'm sure next year will be even better.

BTW-HUGE props to Chuck for pulling it all together!!!

Just wanna say my "Thanks!"  (too tired for emoticons right now)...............

To Chuck: for getting the ball rolling for the NCKA booth, the prep work all the way to the brake down. Many of you do not know this, but Chuck actually works the graveyard shift for UPS at the airport. My point here is that for the ENTIRE WEEK, he only had a few hours of sleep and was still able to manage to help out with the NCKA booth.....that there my friends, is a fine example of commitment. I also want to thank John / JTF and Duane / Insaneduane for helping Chuck and I clean up and load our trucks at the end of the show. I've got some T-Shirts and a hug coming your way...

To all the Local Veterans who took the time to come out and do the seminars: Allen Bushnell (who drove from Santa Cruz), EriK Kunz (from Santa Rosa), Sean White (from Ukiah) Chuck (San Leandro)....

To our bros from So Cal: Dennis Spike , Jim Sammons = The "Godfathers" of kayak fishing. Mike Knott, Brian Long, Sean Caples from Malibu Kayaks and Brent from OEX....

To our very own: The NCKA members who came by just to say "Hello". I had a great time meeting the new members and seeing the familiar faces again.....and to my surprise, I've met MANY lurkers (besides Dan the Lurker) who have been keeping up with our online "chats". Many of 'em had mentioned about how awesome "the vibe" is between the members......

To Papa Bill.....unfortunately, Bill was sick and was not able to attend. Heal fast buddy!! We all appreciate the fact that YOU have brought us all together. Your dad (Bill Sr.) made you a special trophy for the "Hook-Up of the Year" and shipped it to me - to award to you - We will just have to wait till our next NCKA get together.

To Sean / Piscean...for creating those beautiful wood carvings for the awards ceremony!

To Rick from Okuma reels.....thanks for sponsoring our very own Angler of the Year contest! We miss your company - Hope you can join us at Bendo at Mendo this year!

To my sponsors: Karen and Mark at Hook1 Kayakfishinggear.com and Vince Pao of Aquan Sports. Not only have they been supplying me with quality gear essentials, but they have also been supporting many of our tournaments by giving away gift certificates. Special thanks to Mike Mowrey of Ocean Kayaks as well - for the awesome Extra Sport PFD and a cool paddle to go with it!

To our buddy Steve Blackwell aka "chef" ....who is battling cancer and is such a great inspiration to us all! Steve, keep the fight going...we are all behind you!!!

WOW!  I had a great time sunday checkin out everything.  Honorable mention (NCKA booth excluded)goes to the guys at the Daiwa and Jim Sammons.   The Daiwa guys were nothing less than amazing with their help and positive attitude while going over new products.

Jim Sammons, it was nice chatting with you on sunday and I look forward to someday getting down to la joya  to take a break from big fish.  :smt005  Really now, I expect you to use your 6lb line if I see you down there.

Chuck, you da man!!!! :smt023  You never have to thank me for anything, I'm always indebted to you for the things in the past you've helped me with.

Joel, I've started construction of a caged octagon :smt064 but, also congrats to all the AOTY guys, I've fished with all of you and must say your some of the coolest cats around and damn good anglers.

Sean, your rockfish seminar was great. :smt038

And also, thanks guys for my pic being used over the ncka booth, i was very honored to have it up there and thanks Ben(guitarzan) for taking that pic during the elk tourney.  I owe you an action shot at the next one.

InsaneDuane's malibu eXtreme, the bridge on this vessel is very similar to that of a battleship.  Nicely done.

Duane and his crab bouys, these things are super cool.  If your a tackle ho or the kind of guy who only purchases the best, these are essential "must haves"!!!  Duane, awesome, these buoys will save so much space inside or outside the kayak.

Words can not express how bummed I was to miss this event. It is 11:30 am Tuesday and I am just now getting out of bed. Whatever I have it is not fun. I would suggest never getting a real job, not working seems to help a lot!

Joel and Chuck, I owe you big time. Whatever you want you got.

The trophies are amazing! Great work! I might have to enter this year!  :smt007

As far as finances go I am open to any ideas and suggestions. NCKA operates fairly firmly in the red once you account for all the fees and prizes to put on events. Okuma is the only sponsor that has contributed money this year. Generally we do not go out asking for money but for prize support for events. That might have to change but I don't think it will be this year. As soon as someone try's to make a living off of this site, things will get goofy.  My goal all along has just been for the site to pay for itself. It gets fairly close to doing that now, although I just placed an order for a new server that will throw us further back into the red again! Isn't technology great!

We do not want to make this site exclusive to any manufacturer or brand. We have been pretty firm with that, we support the products and companies that support the site.

Enjoyed meeting and hearing Jim Samons lecture. I was surprised he dissed our cooking skills, maybe he was joking.

Thanks mickfish, JTF, ChuckE, Fishunter and Mooch for documenting the event.  Not the same as being there, but I'll take what I can get.  No illness kept me away (hope you're feeling better, Bill), just work.

Congratulations to the aoty winners and to the crew that helped make the booth a success!

Thankfully Erik didn't have to use "the Punisher" on any of us this year. :smt003

Thanks again for the NCKA gaff Erik.I'm sure I'll put it to good use this year.

Chuck,Your seminar got me thinking seriously about doing some crabbing. One of the reasons I decided to buy a new yak now is for more room in the tankwell to stow nets.I like your setup as it's simple and relatively inexpensive to set up once you make an investment in traps. Those new Promar hoop-traps look like they'll work.

Thanks for your hard work at the show guys. You were all outstanding ambassadors to our sport! :smt006

Yeah, you did something few have ever done, got Spike and I within five feet of each other. :smt008
Joel you are a class guy.

Danglin, I forgot to mention, you are the stud of a gear junkies. That is one dialed in kayak.
Put that on an OK and you would have a great kayak :smt003

Keep it real guys, sponsor this and team that can just cause problems. You guys have a great community up there, I hope it stays that way.

By the way I just signed the contortionist to team LJKF

Great to meet you guys at the show. Hope to get up there next year sometime for some fishing. Mooch, Duane, Chuck or if any of you guys ever come down to San Diego, just drop me a PM on BWE and I would be happy to throw on the shorts and flip flops & meet down at La Jolla. Mike Knott

Jim... you're not too far off by calling Danglin a gear junkie too. :smt002
I'm seeing more stuff added to his Outback everytime I see it.

Danglin, Duane... I hope you bros never ever dump in the surf. That could be one expensive yard sale. :smt040

As well you should be,just looking at that picture just makes me happy maybe a little of our love is spreading. It was good seeing you again Spike and Jim was a pleasure meeting and talking with you.
To Joel and the other winners congradulations, Chuck awesome job your the man, now get out and fish. If the river is fishable I don't go to a show  to talk about fishing but this was special and I am so glad I went. I am all ready looking foward to next year, I'll be there every day I can. Duane what can I say you are truly insane awesome job. Could you imagine if Duane had a PB.

Hay guys sorry for the late reply but I have been working like crazy

As for the show I sure am glad I went missed 2 days of work but it was worth it..
Was great meeting everyone like spike & Jim + getting to hear all the seminars’
And I can’t believe that my crab buoys’ went over so well I thought it was a good
Idea but I had no way of knowing people would like it as much as they did
I could not be happier.

But one of the best things was to meet the Malibu guys looking forward to
Working with them in the future must get down south this summer and see
What the warm water is like & check out what the Malibu shops are like

Well I hope to see some of you guys on the water as soon as I can
But I have a whole lot of trees to kill right now so I will get out when
I can.

OH and chuck there will be no yard sale for me because all my gear
Fits under the hatches even the crab buoys & rack because I am on
A big ass Malibu extreme man I love this yak.

Hope to see you all soon

DUANE  :smt006
