Never having been to Mendo I was wondering what is the preferred method for making bait there? I hope is isn't by credit card!

The elusive blue dip net works best. But in a pinch, a credit card will work too.

There was a big shad die off a couple of weeks ago, which is a usual occurrence this time of year. It makes it a little harder to make bait, but the shad are still around. I don't know if a throw net would work, I've never gave it much thought. I bet someone will make bait real good and share their secret.

CHEERS!

Can you use a minnow trap there?

Throw nets are illegal in freshwater in california.

You have to use a dip net to get them.

Or you could be a man and fish artificials....  :smt002

No,

MolBasser, I don't mean a throw net but a minnow trap:

I had asked you about this when we were going to go to Lexington for the Crappie Fest and you said it could be used but wasn't worth the trouble:

"Minnow traps are legal, but for this trip way more trouble than they're worth with the bite the way it is.  I would stick to curly tail grubs.  Worms are not the best for crappie as they are mainly piscavours.  It is best to imitate small fish."

Yeah, I was responding to the post before yours.

I don't have experience with minnow traps, or their usefulness in trapping threadfin shad.  Most people at mendo do two things that I am aware of.

1.  Buy bait.
2.  Dip net shad.

If you read the rules, they are pretty lame in that you cannot share bait.  If I net a bunch of shad, legaly I can't share.  Last year we bought shiners at the bait shop (pooled money and split bait).

I would defer to Scwafish about the bait situation.

You can try mnnow traps but I have had zero luck with thenm.  In the fall, buying minnows is the easiest, most reliable way to go.  Dipnetting shad is thebest bait, but no usually happening in the fall.

Fairly nearby.  Last year I think we pre-ordered a bunch of shiners.

Once again, I defer to Scwafish for details.

And if anyone forgets anything for the BBQ check out The Forks Mkt down the street. They have really good steaks at a good price...Its at the end of Lake Mendocino Drive on State Street.

And the best place to buy fishing gear  is DIAMOND JIMS!!!!!!!
Its on State Street across from Raleys shopping center. They even sell guns, ammo, alcohol, ETC....
