Title: Moss Landing 4.22
Post by: & on April 22, 2005, 05:27:00 PM
Finally got to get out with the boys.  Gabe, Chuck and Jonathan showed up at 6 or so with Kevin right behind.  I was fishing with a newbie, Greg, out of my mirage tandem.

The optimism was ferocious!  Looked like a saturday with so many trailers and boats waiting for the launch.

Bottom line, Greg and I trolled for two miles or so out to the fleet using a 2.5 lb ball for nada.  And that's how it went all day.  Not a whole lot of anything going on.  No salmon, no hali's.  Mooching, trolling - I didn't see any nets flying on the PB'ers.

The ride in was interesting.  Swell and wind picked up big time.  We were taking big water over the starboard gunwale.  By the time we had gotten back to the first yellow can, there was some serious slop that we had to power through.  But everyone made it back and accounted for.

Good fishing with you all and can't wait to do it again (successfully).

Boat Review: That mirage tandem rides extremely low!  It's fast when we're really churning but for regular cruising in swell like today, I miss my old Synchro double - wider beam just kept me so much drier!  Not a whole lot of useable deck space on the mirage either.

Chuck was cool enough to let his sanddab join the one I caught to give to Greg so he wouldn't go home empty handed.  Thx Chuck!

Moss sucked today.  We monitored local vhf chnl 11 and not much was happening anywhere.  Some blamed it on the full moon the night before.  I heard only five measly fish where caught between two packed charter boats.

The odor of skunk was thick.   PEWWWWWW.   On the bright side I didn't hook and lose one today.  It was good to see everyone and the paddling was pleasant.

My neighbor went out in his pb today from Pillar Pt. He limited, but that guy can fish! Maybe it was better up this way. I'm not even sure where he fished; maybe Montara, but when I got home from work there were fillets waiting. Yum! That early season krill-fed salmon doesn't even taste like salmon. Light and sweet as can be.
The water looked nice this morning, then when I was returning home in the PM the south wind was blowing with a vengeance. Incredible difference!

Granitedive, I think you're right.  One guy on the radio at Moss got an OTW report from his buddy at HMB who limited with a nice 19 lber.  It sounded like HMB produced way more than Moss.  Hmmm.... I wouldn't be surprised if salmon start showing at Linda Mar soon :smt003

On a side note --- Would you believe that of the many boats in the bay that day, the DFG (in their gray zodiac) pulled up to me to check my hooks :smt012 .  Luckily, my barbless double circle hook rig check out just fine.  At least... they where very polite about it.
