good one :smt003

From what I've read, salmon don't become sexually mature until they spawn and die.  All these little guys people have been catching are just pups.

Said in good fun ... just stirring the pot.   :smt003

Regionally variable; off Australia, males mature at length of about 8.5-11 ft (2.6-3.4 m), females at about 11.5-13 ft (3.5-4 m); in equatorial Indian Ocean, 80% females mature at a length of 8.9-10.8 ft (2.7-3.3 m) and a weight of 134-22 lb (61-100 kg); off southern California, males mature at a length of about 11 ft (3.3 m) and at age 3-7 yrs, females at a length of 8.5-10.3 ft (2.6-3.2 m) but no data on age at maturity of females. Maximum longevity about 15 yrs.

I bet the fish caught in the derby was pupped this year....

Sure tasted good though.

Yep, this fish was just a babe...

Pups at birth are 45-61 in (114-155 cm) in length and 11-13 lb (5-6 kg) in weight; specimens 6.5-16 ft (2-5 m) long and up to 500 lb (230 kg) are common; maximum length at least 18 ft (5.5 m), and possibly to 20 ft (6 m).

Might have eaten its first and last meal all at once.

:smt097 Sounds like sourgrapes to me, I usually don't go around " killing puppies ",Tring to give a " Guilt Complex" or what :smt018? But I've heard they were great tasting and personally wanted to give it a try. Till now ( Since NCKA ) I've never kept a fish, bass by the hundreds ,stripers, trout ect, most all let go.  I felt I was due to try a few. I must also say, the grow rate on Threshers must be incredible if that was it's first meal. :tom

Little cranky...Been up for two days..... :smt076...Danglin

No,no  you caught the fish legaly and all is good.  I'm not upset, but just posting what I found in terms of size.

I'm not critical at all.  No worries mate.  And as I said before, thresher is one of or the best tasting fish that swim.  I'm not upset you took the fish.

Like I said man, no worries.

Sometimes I will post up stuff without the proper context.  I was merely trying to conviegh that the fish was most likely in its first year of life.

I was personally amazed that they were so large at birth myself.

No biggie, and like I said.....it was delish!

Enjoy that vacation!  My wife was displeased to see I didn't fish the tournament...

Kool Man, This win saved my butt. It was going to be impossible to get my wife to go to Rancho any time soon. I thought for sure it would be a solo trip next year....Guilt as my copilot :-(

She was hinting about everywhere that didn't include white sand beaches or fishing. Now, she and the kids are totally excited about going, and I'm still pinching myself.

If anyone is going out to Target Threshers, Post it up, I know I'm hooked on these beauties. One of the best fighting fish ever....Danglin

Sorry Guys,

A Thresher is really down far on my list.  Got a 25 lbs mooching for salmon on a party boat.  Probably 10 yrs ago.  Saw it jump about 7 to 8 times in a row.   All I could think that it looked like a sturgeon.  Deckhand bled and cut the tail.  I ate round the dark meat.

If you want to talk about a fish to eat then it is a Ono or also know as a Wahoo.  Only, got about 12 of these when I go Long Range out of San Diego.  But, I do not give these away.

Wahoo is very tastey.

They are a great fish to catch also.  They are called "Wahoo" for a reason, it is what people say when they hookup!
