since I live here I should know, but, I don't, does anyone have a suggestion for a rig for halibut in linda mar.

Check out this thread for some ideas.

I drifted for halibut a few times at LM.....last year I caught a small one (size of a dinner plate) with a whole dead squid just right next to the surf break. The divers seem to do really well - I tried fishing the same area where the divers go but can never seem to get 'em. IMO: The main problem when targeting the halibut by hook and line is the abundance of king fish robbing your bait :smt011 I think live bait could be the ticket at LM.....or get a snorkle, mask. 6 mil wetsuite, some fins :snorkel and a spear gun :smt063 (or a Hawaiian Sling)
On a side note:Chris / CPYAK caught a starry flounder yesterday - right by the nipple - but lost it by the yak.

I agree about the divers mooch, I saw a guy on Friday bring in a 20# Hali., but he had tanks. He got it in 12 feet of water, just past the surf line.

I think a great option for the Halibut after live bait will be trolling. If we follow the Crissy field method we can cover more ground and keep the king fish away with artificial lure. I think because there are so few Halibut in the bay we are drifting over nothing 95% of the time. If we troll we can go after them. Sort of.

I bet the bait is so thick in there (and kingfish = food) that the halibut are usually full and just lounging around in the sand. Try using a lively kingfish for bait. Maybe clip a pectoral fin so he flops around alot trying to stay upright.
Halibut at linda mar require a short but powerful speargun w/ reel and a large double-flopper point. A polespear won't work unless you get a perfect headshot - which is hard on a fish that you might only be able to see a single fin sticking up or a little crevice under the end of the tail.

Joe....if I were you, I 'd pay that diver (on tanks) a few bucks to yank the legs on those surfer dudes :smt077 - who messed with you - while they are on the line up. :smt118
-
he seemed like the kind of dude that would do that for free. , but Id still pay him anyway., maybe give him a set of large channel locks just to make it more, well, "secretive".
-
Joe - let me know when you plan on doing this "stunt"....I'd like to get this filmed and sell it to the local news :smt044
----you can also have him "deploy" some pigs blood when the "simulated attack" begins :smt077
I should have my own "you got Punk'ed" show...
-
Just deploy some pigs blood and watch it for real. :smt003
-
Joel, why waste the pigs blood on the surfers when we could be making some dinuguan with it?

Now that's some good stuff brother :smt023 Maybe I should bring some at the Elk tourney and have a little Fear Factor contest :smt045 (of course, I'd have to exclude Chuck,Alex,Elric,Kiel, you and maybe Josh from the contest)
