I love lings! they got such an attitude
Lingcod Attack! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWPKxhPL-Wc#)
-
now I know how my jig feels
-
Almost makes me feel sorry for all those little greenlings i've used for ling bait...... Almost
-
That is a male guarding the eggs. They get very aggressive in the winter when sitting on eggs. That is a brute of a male too. A 15 pound male is about the as big as they get. He is not that big but good size. That old guy has been in his fair share of battles look at the chunks missing from his dorsal fin.

That was awesome to watch, wish I could get down there with them.

I'm just getting into free diving an I can't wait to see my first underwater ling

We're lucky they only get as big as they do.
Can you imagine a 200-300 pound lingcod?
"a little shakin, a little tenderizin...down you go"

they would be more dangerous than the GWS itself......i wonder if they were larger sized way back when Meglodon swam the depths? it seems that everything in the ocean was once larger than today. = did caveman get gobbled up by sea monsters?

That video is why I want to dive AND why I dont want to dive all in one. Lings are like little pit bulls that never give up, I saw a video in alaska of someone pulling in a huge halibut with a ling chompin away at it. He wouldn't let go and they pulled both fish into the boat!! :smt005

Very cool vid like some one else said I tend to think he was gaurding eggs !

I have a friend up in humbolt county that was fishing for lings last summer, and hooked a ~33 inch ling, and had a ~40 inch ling that latched on to the 33 incher mid fight, and did not let go till it was in the boat... yeah they are pretty voracious.

Such an awesome video. Thanks for sharing. Those fish are bad a$$

On Saturday, we came across a cool 10# lingcod that seemed pretty friendly. It would come out as soon as we hit bottom & hang around for as long as we could hold our breath. Unfortunately my battery died on my headcam just as it decided to swim up and do a staredown with me from 2-3" away. :smt010
I kept thinking "what a friendly ling, he wants to be friends!" :smt004
Big Jim came up from a dive... "did you see all those eggs under the ledge!" :smt009
Faithful guardian, the lingcod kept coming out to challenge us... and we kept sticking around because we thought he wanted to play. :smt005

That's cool! A ten pound ling guarding eggs is a BIG male! This isn't his first rodeo and it is pretty late in the spawn season so he is probably feeling a bit lethargic from not eating. Two months ago he would have bull rushed you and made it very clear that he wasn't waiting for a tea party. :smt003
Seems like the entire coastal populations of lings are doing pretty well.

It was SUPER cool!! I had already shot my limit but when I paddled up and fuzz told me there was a big ling down there that was friendly I had to jump back in!! :smt003
Course, when I'm trying to look all cool in front of Harold and Nate my mask starts leaking water my first few dives down and I gotta come back up right when I get down to the big boy! :smt009 :smt010 :smt005 :smt044
Finally fix my mask and drop down next to harold and nate and see the big guys tail poking out...touch the tail and he turns around and puts his face right in mine!! Then over his shoulder, back in the hole, I see the white cauiliflower looking mass of eggs!!
He had no interest in food at all...even when a small fresjly killed blue was waved in his snout he wanted nothing to do with it...not interested in eating at all, just in protecting his babies.
Good daddy!!!
Second biggest Ling I have seen underwater...and was really cool to have such a long interaction with him instead of just shooting at him!!!
Thanks again to fuzz and spinal tap for helping me have that experience!!
:smt006
Sincerely,
Jim

If it was a huge male imagine the size of the female! his other half was probably a high 30 - 40" fish! or bigger!
I love the ocean!
