Hello everyone,
The NorCal HOW team has gathered and decided that our 6th, and possibly, last event for 2017 will be hosted at San Pablo Reservoir on Friday, November 10, 2017. This is Vet's day observed so hopefully we get a good turnout due to the holiday. We plan to try and accommodate approximately 20 vets that day. We will be needing some volunteers to take veterans out on the water as well as some to help with shore duty tasks such as carrying kayaks, prepping and cooking food, ensuring vets are rigged up safely with PFDs and rods, etc.
Few rules:
1. No Alcohol allowed at HOW Events
2. If you choose to bring your own kayak, it will be subject to inspection by the lake employees. They can be strict. Kayaks must be clean and dry, no water at all and no damp seats! We usually could use a few folks willing to take vets out on our tandems or your own as guides.
3. No SUPs allowed on EBMUD lakes.
4. Its technically a no water contact lake so just be aware of that. They haven't been too strict on us before though.
5. Please take pictures of the vets, but ask them if they're OK with it first. Some are not willing to have their picture taken, but those that are usually really appreciate the pictures.
If you think you can help join us, please post in this thread. If you know of any veterans or active duty military that may want to attend, contact Raydon. We'll also post up the event details on our FB page at www.facebook.com/NorCalHOW. Please follow this thread for updates on what we need from you guys as to timing of showing up, cleaning up, etc.

Wishing I could come. Working that day :smt006

I'm free that day and would be happy to do shore duty if needed. I don't know nothin' 'bout catchin' no bass in a freshwater pond so I'd be useless on the water, but let me know if I can help. I do know how to carry a kayak and cook.
-
that would be great, thanks! please send an email to raydon to let him know you're coming to help out!
-
I am working full-time for another larger contracting corporation now so there is a reasonable chance that I won't be able to make this one as it is on a week day.
-
I'll be their 6:30 - 7am
Does SP wave the kayak fee and fishing fee for this event ?
I know we still have to pay a day use fee.

Day use has been free but we need to pay for fishing. No inspection fee last time.

blind center, Parkinson unit, and traumatic brain injury unit. This is our last event for 2017 and I want to thank you in advance for your
dedication to our veterans. If you have any questions, let me know.

Well if just half showed up that would be a good turnout.
I am coming from Ft Bragg if anyone wants a ride thats on the way let me know.
What time do you want us there?

It was an great event. I had the pleasure of guiding a blind veteran. We took a tandem out, the weather wasn't pretty while we were on the water. It rained some but we were enjoying ourseleves. We were paddling around for an hour and 20 mins and it felt like 15 mins.
A big thanks to everybody who made this possible. :smt006
I took my daughter Angela and she had a great time.

Aloha Bruddahs,
Helped at this past Friday's last HOW event of 2017 at San Pablo Reservoir and was just blown away by the generosity, kindness, graciousness of HOW with major heavy logistics lifting for leaders, Raydon, Rob, Ben, Dan, et al for putting together a healing and uplifting event for Severely Disabled American Vets. There was a group from VA Palo Alto, group from Menlo Park VA who were mostly visually and impaired or blind. WE had Vets dating back to service around 1950, Korea, Vietnam and Desert Storm to Present. Even some of the Vets suffering from traumatic brain Injury showed up and had a great time.
It's good to know that these VA staff who attend are very dedicated to bring quality, life-enhancing outdoor activities for their Vets. Shout to VA Palo Alto and Menlo Park, you guys Rock!!! I was blown away how many incredible stories were inside these Vets, some of them, blind or partially blinds, or very physical disabled. I met a Apache Marine who enlisted in 1950 ( is in the photograph with me) and served in Korea as well as 82nd Airborne paratrooper with 80+ jumps under his belt, mostly night jumps.
The energy and feeling of the event was wide open as we were graced with a very warm Fall day with intermittent light showers, light wind and clearing in the afternoon. San Pablo Reservoir was beautiful!!!The Vets are welcomed with such love and generosity starting on with Raydon and crew"s hot breakfast and the lunch was highlighted by "Schicken"s/Marvin. showing up with his Native Son's BBQ pulled pork that was too de for. Was great to see you out there Marvin. I thoroughly enjoyed spending some time talking with you. Now I know why it's called Native Son BBQ!!!
NCKA Bruddahs just keeps putting out positive and uplifting support that is so needed during these challenging and sometimes precarious times.
