I've been reading the past Islander posts and the info is all scattered in different pages. So... can some of you prior Islanders share some tips here for us rookies?

Here are the basics that I've noted:
-pack light
-cash for pot, tips, and tab
-extension cord
-battery/radio charger
-bait tube/live well
-2 or 3 rods max
-2/0 and 4/0 bait holder hooks
-ocean stamp
-large jigs
-gaff
-rubber core weights 1/4 to 1oz(?)
-swim baits and associated weights
-labels/markers for gear

What else in terms of tackle? What other size hooks or weights? Anything else?

It's getting closer!!!  :smt006

I'd get a variety of sized hooks for different types of bait.  I'm bringing size 2, 1, 1/0, 2/0 live bait hooks, assortment of trebles and some octopus hooks to make squid leaders with.  Going with 3oz, 4oz, 6oz, and 8oz weights, knife jigs, lead heads, shrimp flies, sabiki's, swim baits,  and one of Pat's Super Secret Thresher Rigs  :smt044 Also got some crocs and smaller jigs to toss and retrieve.

List looks good. No need to limit yourself to 3 rods. I'm bringing 5 or 6.

Nice checklist, thanks for putting it together!

Where can I buy surface iron and yoyo iron? What weight and hook size should I get for these two?

Fiserhmans Warehouse at the new location probably still carries the irons. I've had better luck with the heavier ones for yo-yo-ing (want to get to the bottom quicker to begin the fast retrieve. Some people like the scrambled egg design; I've had luck with blue and white. I carry two of any given color in case it turns out to be the hot color but get one bit off or burned off during the retrieve.

You can also get them at the Fisherman's Landing tackle store.

The store at the harbor in San Diego has soooooo many of the surface/jig irons.  I still have the two that I bought for the trip I took in 2013 with the price tags on.  :smt044

Thanks a lot for the pointers, i will do a mini-shopping trip once I get there on Thursday.

One more question, I did not see any mentioning of fish finder. Do people use fish finders on the trip, or just fish wherever the mothership take us to?

If you have time you can stop by Charkbait in Huntington beach or squidco in san diego. Pretty sure the tackleshops at the landing charge you the last minute shopping convenience markup.

Definitely bring your fishfinder. You can charge your batteries in your room.

Definitely bring your fishfinder. You can charge your batteries in your room.

And if your fishfinder is a higher current draw, bring 2 batteries, and swap out on the charger at lunchtime.  If you're unsure, bring an extra battery.  You could conceivably be running your electronics 12+ hours in a day.

And bring your wheels if you have them. They will help with loading the kayaks. You can put 'em back in your car after loading the yaks.
