Title: Trout on Steroids - Shadow Cliffs
Post by: DieHardFishing on February 07, 2018, 03:17:17 PM
With all the main ocean targets being out of season, I took the kayak out to shadow cliffs for a quick morning workout and ended up doing pretty well on some quality stockers. Trolled grubs from 7-12:30 for 2 solid fish around 6 pounds and 2 smaller fish around 2 pounds. Met a few other NCKA people out there, one of which landed a nice one that looked to be around 7 or 8 pounds Check out the video here:

Thanks for watching and I hope you all are staying busy while waiting for salmon and rockfish season to open back up!

What do these stockers taste like? I have ate Berryessa rainbows but they are a different strain and taste great with nice pink/orange meat. I've heard these can get quite mushy and the meat is an off white color. What's the deal?

Lassens are a strong orange color.  Nice meat.  DFG fish have been getting better quality recently as well.

Yes Lasson trout produce a nice orange edible meat.  Picture of filet from a month ago.  (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180208/c1fb9c18baaabbad01880294e7f37214.jpg)

wow nice this looks nothing like the planter i caught at quarry last week.

they probably add some color to the feed to get the orange, certainly is more appealing.

Not exactly sure why but they cut and eat better than white meat Dfg planters.  And the bigger one have nice fat marble like a salmon.

Dang nice size!! I would go to that place but the price is getting too prohibitive. I think it was 18 bucks last time for everything. My annual fishing license was 43.

They add crustaceans or the shells to the feed to give it the red color. Crustaceans give ocean going salmon the red color as well.

that's cool.  i've always wondered as you see it on the label at the grocery store with farmed salmon, steelhead etc.

I'm so jealous.  Went out to ShadowCliffs two times with my son,  no boat, but we fished from shore and got skunked each day.  I'm even more sour because it's $10 each day.  I'll probably go back and try trolling.  Nice video though!

Nice save on the rod falling off btw.  I was thinking to get those rod holders would you still recommend em?

Hey guys, thanks for watching the video!

In my opinion, they aren't as good as salmon. However, like what others have said, they are better than the small DFG planters.

I would definitely give it another try trolling. When I was there I didn't see a single fish caught from the shore. Good luck!

Nice save on the rod falling off btw.  I was thinking to get those rod holders would you still recommend em?

Yeah, I would recommend those rod holders. That was my fault for almost losing the rod. Got too excited with the fish on the other side, lol.
