Pay it Forward Paddle
July 17th, 2010
8:00 AM at the Santa Cruz Harbor Kayak Launch Ramp
$25 suggested donation

A friend to many here at NCKA, inspiration and fellow NorCal Kayak Angler was diagnosed with Cancer. Joel “Mooch” Lotilla  is one of the founding members of NorCal Kayak Anglers , and has been an extremely positive influence in the Kayak Angling community and an inspiration to anglers, paddlers and friends for many years.

The members of NCKA have responded to the news of Mooch’s diagnosis by banding together, creating a PayPal account to accept donations to help with the cost of medical expenses, and donating any and all profits from a series of fishing and kayaking events to the MLPA, “Mooch Life Protection Account” (a pun on the controversial Marine Life Protection Act acronym). The PayPal account for the MLPA has been posted to the website so that anybody can go to www.ncka.org <http://www.ncka.org>  and make a donation to Mooch.

The A-Hulls, a group of big hearted residents of NCKA are organizing an event to support Mooch right here in Santa Cruz. The A-Hulls  are very passionate about helping organize an event that will not only generate funds for Joel, but also celebrate the freedom and joy that paddling provides, and raise awareness and support for Joel and all those affected by Cancer. The first annual Pay it Forward Paddle hopes to accomplish all these goals!

On July 17th at 8am a group of paddlers (all forms of paddlers welcome!!) will meet at the Santa Cruz Harbor Kayak launch and will head out on a 5 mile course around the Mile Buoy and eventually back to the harbor.  A suggested donation of $25 is requested, and paddlers are encouraged to collect additional “sponsorships” for the cause.

We will have at least one support boat on hand to assist paddlers as needed, and some form of post paddle BBQ/celebration at Twin Lakes State Beach next to the harbor.

Those who wish to pre-register can do so via the Pay it Forward Paddle PayPal account on www.ncka.org <http://www.ncka.org> . POLEPOLE IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON THIS..

For more information, please contact Brent Pass at 408-309-6791 or email scbpass@att.net or just post questions here.

If you decide you would like to join we can provide you with the flyer template to print out as well as a form for collecting sponsors if desired. Any and all are welcome, so bring your friends!

PAY IT FORWARD is described as an obligation to do three good deeds for others in repayment of a good deed that one receives. Such good deeds should be things that the other person cannot accomplish on their own. In this way, the need to help one another can spread exponentially through society, creating a social movement with the goal of making the world a better place.

Any additional ideas for the post paddle beach celebration, post em up guys, I heard Andy say something about some cooking.... YUM!

Our own Allen  Bushnell of NCKA and The Lets Go Fishing Radio Show will be help getting the word out on his weekly radio show up to the event, tune in guys!

Every Thursday Night 7-8

Don’t know ya personally Joel, but lets do this, you got what it takes from what I can tell!

I am super excited about this!!!!!!

The paddle is gonna be awsome and no matter how much money we raise for Mooch (in addition to all the money already flowing to the MLPA) I think it is going to be a great way to celebrate and honor Joel.

Also, we want to have a concurrent walk from the harbor to Cap Pier for the non-paddlers/family members...Cap Pier/Beach is a great place to kick it and there is plenty of family fun to be had!!

I will post up a map and details about the walk in a bit...

THANK YOU Brent for taking the lead on this...I know Cancer is a subject that you feel very strongly about and I am honored that I get to participate and help out with such a cool event.

Super special thanks also to PolePole and Scallen for their support, wisdom and assistance.

A-hulls...I love it when a plan comes together!!   :smt003 :smt005

Sincerely,

Jim

Anybody who wants to be in a skiff and take pictures of the paddlers as they round the mile-buoy and be on hand to support any paddlers please post up and let us know or send a PM.

The skiff will be one of those Capitola Boat and Bait skiffs and we will need at least one person on there with a VHF and a camera!!

Sincerely,

Jim

Thank you, Jim - I'll be trying to bring the fam and they'll not settle for less than a cush suite with a pool nearby.   :smt003  I am confident, however, that you and I will share a coldy while admiring your new ab wall - BBQ or one of those tasty looking  blackened fish will likely come into play as well.  Hotel w/ pool w/in walking/stumbling distance of your place?

Hhmmm....not a ton of options right in Capitola Village, and I don't think any of them have a pool and are probably not that reasonably priced:

The Venetian is literally AT the Pier and the beach is kinda like a pool:

http://www.capitolavenetian.com/

Capitola Hotel is about two blocks from the water and right on the main drag with the bars and restaraunts:

http://www.capitolahotel.com/

Capitola Inn is conveniently located and a short walk to the beach:

http://www.thecapitolainn.com/information.php

Depot Hill is right between my house and the beach, but looks pretty fu-fu:

http://www.innatdepothill.com/

Probably most cost-effective (and the only one I know that has a pool) is the Best Western over on 41st (2 minute drive or 10 minute walk or bike ride to beach/village):

Hope that helps??

Sincerely,

Jim

It's really cool to see how this thing has come together. I feel lucky to be a part of it. Ya'll make me proud. But I know Mooch would do the same for me.
Kinda ironic that it's going down in Mooch's favorite place to fish = Santa Cruz  :smt044
Looking forward to it guys!

Thanks, Jim!  You're better than AAA!   :smt003

I'll start working on the Bosslady and hopefully will make some reservations next week.  Anybody got a paddling machine that I can use?  I'd love to ride on a T140 or T160, a boat like Big Jim's, or something else long and quick.  I can bring my own ride, but borrowing would be real nice.  I can bring all my own OTW gear and personal items - paddle, wetsuit, PFD...etc.

I've gotta say, looking at trying to get down there for this event is feeling like the next proper development in my kayak life.  Thanks, Brent and Jim, for heading this up, and thanks, everyone, for being so supportive of our bro, Da Mooch.   :smt056
