My buddy (new dad) who lives in Rohnert Park asked me to teach him how to fish. He's very fond of an idea of father/son bond time while fishing when he's son grows up a little. I'm thinking of taking him out to Lake Berryessa since it's pretty close to his home and from what I hear it's pretty good fishing for trout and bass. He only fished a couple of times in his life (late 30's) and never caught anything. He doesn't even know how to tie a hook. I'm planning to teach him the basic knots, different lures, technics, different species, regulation, etc, from the shore (hopefully yak fishing down the road). But I never been to Lake Berryessa so I would love some pointers. Bass fishing from the shore sucks so I'll be targeting mostly trout. If someone can point me to general area for trout fishing at Lake Berryessa, I would greatly appreciate it.  :smt001

A bunch of us of were there about a month ago at Steele Canyon fishing campell cove and did pretty good on the trout and bass. The trout were hitting everything from bass plugs to spoons,  and hoochies 10-30ft down. But we trolling on yaks of course. Your not gonna have much luck on the trout on shore up there but could catch bass and crappie.  Oak shores day use area is a good area to walk the bank for bass and fish for catfish. Get out there early if you go before the lake lice come out (private boaters). Let us know how you do :smt006

I fished bass at lake Berryessa 8 seasons from shore and had a lot of success pretty much anywhere shallow (1-15 ft). Fluke works well this time of the year. Either let is dance on the surface with fast retrieval or jerk it subsurface. Popper will be great in about a month or so. Be prepared to walk a lot. move 3-5 ft for every cast. Good place to try are Oak shore, first bridge coming from south, schoolhouse. My wife and I will be launch our Hobie outfitter for the first time there at Oak shore this coming weekend.

I did pretty well where the mouth of Steel Canyon opens up to the Main Lake.  Caught a lot of medium sized smallies and some nice Eagle Lake Trout using Rapala Jointed Shad Raps.
