Title: Unusual Rockfish Lures
Post by: scottymeboy on March 28, 2018, 03:26:46 PM
With Rockfish season right around the corner,
the fish itch(strong desire to go fishing) is hitting me something bad!!! So I find myself making homemade lures. I was at a swapmeet last weekend and picked up some odds and ends and put these together...
Am I the only guy out there who makes stuff  that I hope will catch rockies and Lings?
Let’s hope they work :smt002

Tight Lines!

Wrenches are my favorite especially when you can get five or six for a dollar at a yard sale

Any old timers recognize the first lure attached to the swim bait? I have some left in my tackle box...from about 1968.
Here is the hint...a piece of pork rind was attached to the lure, on a spreader with the weight provided by a 4oz bug-eye lure....and I still have some of those also.
Just finished a 10 hour day, then a 19 mile road ride... followed by a road soda (22oz Race Five). When I sober up I will shoot some pictures and names of the lures, Ron

PS. The 9/16 box/open end with a treble/squid combo should slay em!

Do lingcod prefer a standard wrench or a metric one?

In American waters they prefer a standard wrench...

wait for a sale at Harbor Freight , you can buy them in bulk   :smt002 :smt044 :smt044 :smt044

I dunno, even used as lures, somehow they're still going to find a way to break and send my knuckles into the engine block in my car.

Great ideas.   I am sure they will work.  Love the wrench.
I have been tying flies with doll or wig hair and the ling and rf love them.
Sometimes I have been attaching my flies to any heavy junk for extra fast sink.

There’s a dory boat captain out of Pacific City Oregon that uses a chunk of concrete with a hook on it and nails monster lingcod off the deep reef.

Are you sure concrete catches lingcod and not ROCK-fish?

I think if you could recreate that in the shape of Slim Pickens from Dr. Strangelove, I'd be in for a dozen.

I noticed some struts in the metal junk pile at work and they turned into these Homemade Ling Bars.
The big one is 9 in.-8 oz.  The small one is  5 in.- 6.5 oz...
A piece of squid , a little jiggin and it should be Ling on!!!
Hope they work...
Should know in 1 1/2 weeks :smt002

We did a junk jig team challenge Team C.O.D versus  INSAYN Fishing Team. Rules were only hooks, snap swivels, and line allowed no other traditional tackle allowed. Here’s a few of mine.

Plastics Lures that’ll possibly snag and litter the ocean floor??? Maybe we should limit our waste down to lead and metal hooks.

scottymeboy, do you always put a trailing hook on your swimbaits?  Does it work well and not ruin the action of the bait?  My thoughts behind *not* putting a trailing hook would be to sift through the small bites and get the bigger fish with the larger bite...

Hey Jackson
No I rarely put the trailing(stinger) hook but thought it may help my hook up rate...I’ve had alot of chewed up swimbaits and figure it may help ( and it has) catching fish that don’ get the jighook.
Not sure of the swim action??
I’m experimenting all the time with random stuff and ideas.... hoping someday to get into the 40” club :smt002
