Title: JUMBO Dungies, 5 keepers in one pull
Post by: DieHardFishing on December 28, 2017, 05:55:43 PM
Another trip out on the kayak and but his time crabbing for some Dungeness crab out of HMB. Only put down one pot but it had 4 keeper Dungeness and one rock crab that I could have kept but decided to throw it back since I had plenty of Dungeness already. Tried to do some fishing as well but the fishing sucked this time around. This was my first successful crabbing trip on a kayak. Make sure you subscribe and stay tuned for the second part of this video where we cook up these crab. It is going to be delicious.

Cool video.
Really liked the visual between a male and female.
A couple of notes. I didn't notice (not saying it wasn't there), but i didn't notice any rotten cotton (destruct device) on the trap.

From DFG (dfw):
Quote
Crab traps must contain at least one destruct device made from a single strand of untreated cotton twine size No. 120 or less that creates an unobstructed opening anywhere in the top or upper half of the trap that is at least 5 inches in diameter when this material corrodes or fails.

It's also a good idea to have a clip weight on your crab trap line if you are using floating line. This way it doesn't lay on the surface to possibly get tangled in a boats prop. Bad for him and bad for you if you lose your pot.

Again, very cool video. Thanks for posting.

Love both the videos!  :smt007 I will be crabbing from my yak for the first time soon and can only hope I even get one. I think I will try making a few rolls with my hopefully fresh caught crab(s) too - great idea.  :smt003
Thanks for sharing~

+1

I've been using these mini spring clamps with a 5 oz lead sinker zip tied through a small drilled hole.  Let out the pot line + a little slack, wrap up and secure the excess rope on the buoy, then clip the line weight a little bit down the line to sink the slack.  I'm sure there are lots of ways to do it...

didn't notice the cotton either.

RE: weighting the line: any plus/minuses to using leaded line vs weighing down something that floats? (other than price, I guess).

I'm always worried about high tide burying my float..so if I'm gonna use that weight I should clip the weight on however many feet the differential btwn the tide I'm dropping in to the high tide?
