Dustin, I changed the end date in your post to the 3rd, which is what is on the Islander site.  It also makes sense as we will have 3 full days of fishing, 31, 1, 2, and back early morning 3rd.

Yup, I think I actually fixed the date in one of the posts from the other thread, then copy and pasted a copy and pasted date that wasn't updated.   :smt002

We're shoving off in a few hours. Most of the boats are reporting limits of YT, limits or near limits of Dodos, and a smattering of YFT.

Wish us luck!

I hope they got a worthy replacement for the geezer.

It took two of em to replace Geezer, and in my opinion they still came up short. The food was good, but I liked Geezer's meals better.

We came back with 311 peanut YFT for 24 anglers. We repped NCKA well with Polepole catching the most fish by far, me putting the first tuna on the boat and also taking 3rd place in the boat jackpot with a 18.6lb yft, and Bushy just being the coolest, sexiest, cat on the boat.

I caught 14.

5 on the troll, 4 on bait on the slide, and 5 on a mint\white JRI surface iron. Threw the popper for awhile but never connected. They were also hitting the flatfalls and yoyo irons.

This sized tuna were a blast on my Blackhole 801h and Lexa 400.

Unfortunately I only took a few pics. I'll try to post em tomorrow.

The counts at the dock were high on yellowtail, with good numbers of dorados, and only a few tuna.  However, the yellowtail were all 4# dinks.  The captain heard of a good yellowfin tuna bite, but but it was a far 16+ hour run.  But he decided our best option was to make the run, so off we went on Sunday night.  We didn't reach the fishing ground until 3PM Monday.  The seas were angry and the bite was slow as we continued south with the boat only getting 11 for the day.  Did we make the right decision?  Were we in for a tough bite after a long run?

After a rough night of jogging into a 5 foot swell and 20 knot winds, we start off day 2 in the same general for the same slow pick.  The captain worked his way to the north again where the Pacific Queen was getting a decent bite.  We get to the area about mid-morning to a better pick, lots of troll stops, but only a few on the bait.  It was good enough that we got 114 for the day.  Things are looking up and the seas were settling down.  I got ~8 today, including a small dorado.

What's to do for day 3?  If we stayed in the area, we had to leave at noon to make it back to San Diego in time.  If we ran all night, we could get to the rat yellowtail, but even that bite died in the weather of day 1, and the paddies were all broken up and would take time to rebuild.  Captain John made the decision to stay.

Day 3 resulted in ~64 tuna by 11:30.  The day before we had 84 by lunch, so day 3 was starting out slower and we had only 1/2 hour left.  We then hit a 4 banger on the troll, and all hell broke loose.  The tuna were boiling all around the boat, and would continue to do so for the next hour.  We landed well over 100 in that time, then absolutely had to leave.  The deckhands brailed bait to keep the tuna boiling as the Royal Polaris headed our way.  We handed off the bite to them before motoring off.  They were already hooked up as we were leaving.  I wonder how they ended up doing on that school.

What an epic bait stop to end the trip, probably the best bait stop of my life!

The first of many stories ...

On day 2, I was up at the bow yo-yoing an old school scrambled egg Iron Man 5 jig, when some of the others laughed at me, and kidded that I was trying to catch yellowtail.  Well, I got one on it.  But I didn't have them convinced.

Early on day 3, I did the same, yo-yoing at the bow.  I proceeded to catch 4 in 4 drops.  There were no more laughs.  This was great as the stern was getting to be a cluster fuck, which is why I went to the bow in the first place.  Well, half the boat joined me at the bow, which was now crowded.  After the 11:30 jigstrike, I switched back to dropping bait in the corner at the stern.  Half the boat was now at the bow, so the back deck was fairly clear.  I railed 8 fish in that stop, many times getting bit instantly as the bait hit the water.  I ended up with a trip total of 22 yellowfin, 1 bluefin, and a dorado.  In total, the boat ended up with 311 fish for 24 anglers.
