I've had salmon bust 25# line, but only because I was horsing in a big fish.  :smt005

I don't use any topshot though, all braid and the only mono is the 3ft on the lure.

As for mono, izorline, big game and pline are all good.

Just loosen your drag and try to be more patient. :-)
And fluorocarbon topshot is a waste of $ in my opinion...because salmon in the ocean can’t tell the difference. And fluoro is not very “stretchy” by design AND it takes way longer to biodegrade (4000yrs vs 600yrs). Unless you’re using a dodger & hoochie, then the stiffness of flouro would be better than standard limp mono. But even then, I’d just run a short 8ft topshot or normal leader.

Where do you guys find flouro in 30lb test?
I have been having trouble locating any decent sized spools, even the small leader spools aren't easy to find.
I've been using maxima ultragreen mono, but think I would prefer flouro for abrasion resistance

what do you mean jammed up? Ya gotta move the line over with your thumb if it builds up too much on one side.  Or rotate the rod.

I'd go full mono. I mean I did say I have a topshot, but when fishing shallow up north I never get to my braid.

If you're using a lever drag don't fill up the whole reel in order to leave room for it to accidentally build up in case you're not paying attention.  I switched over to levelwinds so I don't have to bother
Yup, lever drag, not paying attention...gotta thumb that puppy and it's an added task but necessary.  I took a bunch of top shot off to allow for some space.

To top shot or not to top shot that is the question.  And as others mentioned are you using a downrigger A downrigger limits how much active line is out. I don't use a downrigger and when I used to troll with mono I would end up with an incredible mess due to line twist. Not a problem with braid. How much top shot? If you are using a downrigger and you have 30 feet beyond the clip I would use about that much. You want the knot to be clear of the rod. You don't want it snagging on anything when its under pressure as in when a big fish is ripping line.

Eh Bruddahs,
My brother who has fished for salmon for many years now says that he doesn't use fluoro, just leader line mono which is stiffer than regular mono, but not as stiff as fluoro. He also says that it is a lot cheaper. I guess he must be right. He's always limiting on salmon when other guy are coming empty of charters. This past Friday, he was out Bolinas on a charter with 12 people. The entire boat caught just 6 fish and he caught 2 of them, pretty good size 15-20#'s.
I guess he knows what he's doing!!!
Aloha,

No topshot here.  I reccomend 30-40lb Maxima or Sufix.  No flourocarbon for salmon.

Me neither.  All mono.

Sometimes salmon slurp a chove right down their throat and the line gets right up on one of those sharp teeth.  I've broken off a few nice fish this year using the same line and leader configuration that's caught lots of fish including threshers up to 100 pounds.

As I read about fluorocarbon, the more I find it not "all that".

Fluoro has its applications/place , think of it as a tool . Might not need or use it all the time buts it's in the tool box if you do .
Deal, in balance...flouro is my friend :smt006

25 pound test moss green PLine CXX is what I use, and I have never lost a salmon to a failed knot or line breakage. Leaders are tied up with 30 lb test CXX for a little extra abrasion resistance.

Save the braid for rockfish, IMHO... For salmon fishing with barbless hooks, you WANT your line to have some stretch.
