Two years ago our beach camp was "raided" at 0530 by the Mexican Marines in the search for totoaba. After several pots of coffee with the commander, he explained that the Mexican government with help the our government have stepped up the enforcement and protection of the vaquita and the totoaba. Later that day it was rather intimidating to have a cutter with a 20mm mounted on the bow pull up along side your kayak. We were not aware that a couple of marines had been left in an abandoned building down the beach from our camp. Turned out to be a good thing because they ran off three malo hombres that pulled into our camp while we were on the water. Just last June, camped at the same place, a tin boat pulled into camp and tried to sell us a 30 lb fish. We passed, they dumped it, it washed up on shore by our camp. It was a totoaba missing its swim bladder. We drug it off into the desert for the coyotes and buzzards. You don't want to be caught with a totoaba.
