looks big....and heavy....might sink your yak   :smt100

IMO: I prefer keeping a separate GPS unit - so I can use it other than kayak fishing =  backpacking, mountain biking or snowboarding.....finding Victorias Secret  :smt061

Shipping weight is not the weight of the unit.

It is the weight of the box with all the accessories and is a high guestimate at that.

I think a friend of mine has one, I'll ask him for a review.  I seem to remember that he really liked it.

I, however, agree with the Mooch.  I like my units separate.

Here is the reply I got.  I just asked him how much it weighed as a follow up.

Hi Chris,
Yes I do. It is a little large due to being a combo but my reasoning was that I would rather have one unit than two and it makes a good backup unit when out on a private boat as well as the primary for the kayak.
Can't say I have dunked it to test its waterproof claims but it has got plenty of saltwater on it and works fine a year or more after getting it still with just a wipedown when I remember.
The gps uses Mapsend software and comes with a street based map to which I then added the Bluenav software. Via hookup to the pc you can switch between maps depending where you are going which is fairly quick and simple.
It has an auto-distress button which transmits gps position and an emergency signal if in danger and also has the 'direct-dial' option (MMSI) which basically lets you have private conversations with others over the vhf who have the same capability without having to broadcast to everyone to find the one person you want to talk to. You get a free id number when you register and just need your buddies number to then 'dial' them. Seems cool but don't know anyone with it to test it as yet - LOL.
Signal power seems good - I can use it at home in Chula and pick up traffic from the ocean at IB at least - not bad for a handheld.
I would recommend it - its big but robust and I trust it when I need it. Let me know if I cna tell you anything else.
Cheers,
Paul

It is fairly hefty and weighs about a pound I guess and is fairly long due to the antennae which doubles the length. I got a waterproof case for it from Jim Sammons and just clip it behind me on my crate where it is easy to listen and then reach for it when needed. I also got the small hand-mic for it which I should probably use more and would be much easier to clip to my pfd. You would definitely feel it if you wore it on your vest. I may think of mounting it on the deck at some point, then with the hand mic it would be perfect to just reach for that and talk at will. Mind you it has about as much dust on it as my golf clubs at the moment - when's the last time I went ocean kayaking????????

This is the weight response.
