Gonna try launching from Rockaway for some crabbing.  It will be a new launch in probably not so tame conditions.  Planning to launch a little after 7A.

12/21@7:00A. Conditions are fantastic...if you like to surf. :smt005 Decent swell, drizzling, and the tide is coming in. Gonna wait till 8:30 to see if conditions improve.

Gluck.  Go to the far south end of the beach to launch.  Going for rockfish at all?

I have been silent for a while here not going out much anymore due to big waves. I take my dog to Rockaway Beach a lot to play and there were photographers there yesterday filming surfers with cleaner surf with overhead waves with about 7 to 8 foot faces (overhead). Linda mar and rockaway have been too big and sloppy most of the time. Seems like the surf is changing from a few years ago when there were a lot of flat days in December and January too.

Please, please please, have someone on the beach video your launch and landing!

If you end up at Taco Bell, pop over to NorCal surf shop and say Hi! to Uncle Pat.

FYI, when the sweel is large the crabs go deep, deeper than 100 feet, or bury themselves in the sand. Otherwise they get pushed around, just like crab pots. Its not worth crabbing in big seas in shallow water.

ITM, several surfers came by and said "You're going out...in this. Good luck" or something like that.

@9:30A There were periods of calmness followed by waves sending water almost to the terraced dirt area.  And then I launched, in the apparent calm, and then I was hit by a small wave that came out of no where.  The wave turned the kayak sideways and the yard sale begun.

Nothing too dramatic really I was only in 3-4 feet of water at the time but ended up losing my fav Smart Wool beanie and my brand stinking new Scotty Trap Ease crab puller.  Oh, and I dumped and retrieved one of my hoop nets and "caught" a bunch of mussels so no skunk other than the smell still permeating from my clothes from the  skunk-meets-dog incident.  :smt006

I'm looking forward to the calm, chill ocean days of Summer.  :smt007

Thanks.  After this morning I have a strange urge to both learn how to surf and troll for trout at my local lake.
