Saltwater is the cure for everything that ails us,
sweat, tear or the sea.

Gotta wonder if that was the gentle giant that Justin saw a week or so back when diving the cove.

First and foremost, please don't judge divers by the actions of a couple rogues.  No one is more pissed about the situation than the spearfishing community!  Divers on Spearboard have been working with officials to catch the perpetrators based on information from both divers and kayak fishermen in La Jolla.

One of the defining characteristics of spearfishing is selectivity.  Rather than catching fish, then releasing the short or undesirable ones, we are able to discern which game we want PRIOR to pulling the trigger.  As with any group of sportsmen, true divers embrace this principle... and the frustration of a situation like this is maddening.   :smt011

What bugs me the most is the level that this has been blown out of proportion - a sensationalized media scapegoat.  On any given day, BSB are errantly hooked by fishermen all over socal.  Despite best attempts to release them, assuming a mortality rate of zero is absurd.  Of course, a released BSB that dies somewhere underwater... isn't a good news story.  They also don't comment on commercial by-catch laws which allow commercial fishermen to legally bring BSB into the markets.  In no shape or form do I think the diver in this case is anything less than 100% guilty - I believe he deserves everything coming to him; however, the media is catering to an un-educated public who will likely not discern between the sport and the individual...

On a side note, here's an example of the fishing releases on bloodydecks, report from 2 days ago:
http://www.bloodydecks.com/forums/inshore-islands-fishing-reports-southern-california-usa/72980-wsb-limits-catalina-morning-other-species.html
"That nite we caught & Released an estimated 200# BSB. The gaff in the lower jaw was used to guide her through the water. She started to kick so we hope she survived."

From those I know who have eaten BSB , they are pretty tasty.

Here is an interesting photo of a fish which looks a lot like a BSB being fileted on Randys Fishing Trips website out of monterey, maybe its a giant black Rockfish?

What the heck is it?
