Any one have any tips for fishing the delta from a kayak? Places to stay away from? Places to launch and fish...
Any one have any experience trapping crayfish from a yak or boat?

Like: Don't anchor in the middle of the river...

Thanks in advance...

I've fished the Delta in the past (from a 16 ft. aluminum boat) - Had success at Franks Tract with stripers. Just look for gaps between the Islands and fish it when the tide starts to move :smt023 Throw a hair raiser where the current flushes out from the gap and jig it all the way to where the current slacks off.

One thing to keep in mind = Be careful fishing in the sloughs = bass boats, skiers, jet skiers LOVE to gun it when they hit some turns  :smt011

Good luck and paddle safe!

Mooch gave some good advice for stripers.  There is also some very good LMB fishing all over the Delta.  Fish parallel to the weeds and tules and cast back into any little coves or indentations along the banks.  I like Frank's Tract.  Be careful in the narrow sloughs, some mighty big power boats are found all over the Delta and I wouldn't want to argue with one over right-away.

Good stuff here, also always keep an eye on the wind. Right now the delta is relatively calm still but in another month or so it really gets blowing. Come summer you can expect 10-20mph winds almost always often with gust to 30-35mph. Early morning and late evening often quites down a little but only in winter do we get calm wind free days. Just after noon the wind usually starts picking up - almost always blows in from the bay to the central valley (cool air rushing in to replace the hot air that is rising in the central valley). Not trying to scare you or anything I generally paddle in anything up to 20mph with gust to 35 without much hassle. You just want to plan ahead for the wind, it can be quite a workout paddling down river into the wind with a rising tide. In fact good tip here you can fight the wind and you can fight the tide but fighting both just makes it work. I like to paddle into the wind on a falling tide so the water helps you out a bit and then use the wind to drift fish back to the put-in that way you only have to work one way. Also there are better places than others when it gets windy. On a real windy day try to stay away from sloughs that are lined up with the direction the wind is blowing.

Originally I got into fishing to fish.

Thanks for the advice fellas. I really appreciate it.
Plans have changed due to weather, will fish Saturday, most likely the Pittsburg area. If it gets too windy we will beach out yaks on an island or slough and fish from shore.

good advice already.
I fish the Detal...Frank's Track a few times a year. I work the tules and the rock wall.
Why Do I paddle a kayak instead of a float tube or a pontoon boat? I like seeing where I'm going not where I've been!
Paddle safe and wrap'em tight.
