Title: [SITE] Soften the hard sell please
Post by: polepole on June 03, 2015, 04:21:14 PM
Been seeing more and more people posting stuff like the following:

1) Check out this other kayak fishing site or facebook page.
2) Consider a guided trip with me.
3) Buy my goods.

And have been getting more complaints about it to.

This site is not a site for one to troll up more visitors to another site.  Nor is it a site for you to use for your own marketing purposes (unless perhaps you are offering an NCKA specific special deal).  While we do enjoy patronizing site members, it's becoming increasing subjective in terms of what is allowed and what isn't.  And we don't really want that either.  So all we ask is that you all soften up the message a little.  It pretty easy actually ... ask yourself if what you are posting is answering the question being asked.  If not, then your hard sell is on.  Kindly turn it off.   :smt002

Thanks.

I was contacted by mods here regarding posting links to fishing reports on my blog. I understand the issue you have brought up and appreciate the rational soft sell request. Just to clarify my blog is completely non commercial even though I believe Wordpress will display ads to those clicking on my blog. I use the blog to post my fishing/travel stuff because it provides a central place for me to store these adventures. I used to post long detailed posts to another private site but the site crashed and all was lost. I post only to private clubs such as here and Fulllspeed and often put a LOT of effort into my posts and enjoy sharing intel and lies. Let me know if that is cool.

This a great website you have here.

VK you can still tell me about sales.  I like spending money on cool stuff I wouldn't normally know about.

I get it...just soft sell it.  I am not one who scours the Internet for deals but do like the occasional posted link.  I got downrigger balls for $2 each and would not have ever known if someone didn't post.  But that wasn't selling items from ones own business so probably ok.

I agree with Pole Pole.  Lots of folks pushing their wares/services here.  Maybe it is time to sell advertising  space on the site for those who want to commercialize.

Is there somewhere we can refer to where the rules are specifically delineated?

Like if someone is moving to eureka and I suggest friending our local facebook page, run by someone who isn't me and I don't get anything in return, is that bad?

How about if I suggest hiring a local guide without any expectation of any type of kickback?

What is the difference between a hard sell and a soft sell?  I always took a hard sell to mean that someone was persistent, making more than one attempt at a sale directed toward a particular person/event.  I guess not?

Whatever you want people to stop doing should really be spelled out, because I can't tell if any of this is directed at me even though it might be.  I dont think VK should stop doing anything that he has been doing, it has been nothing but useful.

I get how eric dripping a link to his page without prividing a full report here is crossing a line, but how about rob who fully laid out his report and pics and everything?  Surely that is okay, right?  Even if he put it in 6 different places on the interwebs and hopes it generates business?

I guess I just don't get the rules that you are trying to lay down.  It isn't very clear.

We really don't want to make hard rules for this.  Otherwise the rule would likely be "no posts of a commercial nature", and we really don't need to go there.  For the most part, people know when they are pushing the limits.  If there is any doubt, don't do it.

And no, it's not directed at you Doug, unless you're trying to sell me some legal service to spell this out in no uncertain terms.   :smt006

+1 or make a subscription based subforum for things like that

If I have crossed a boundary by my posting for sale items or any other actions regarding my employment , and it has caused any discord ,I want to make it right.

I have a habit of becoming exuberant over fishing , fishing gear and tackle. My intent is/ was to share that excitement and I forgot about  crossing that boundary.

I respect the site, moderators and all the NCKA brothers and sisters and if it messes with the Chi,Karma or Spirit of NCKA I offer my sincere apologies.

Respectfully,
Vic/VK

If I were to use you as an example, I don't see any issues.  Offering up sales/deals to NCKA member has never been frowned upon.  And the rate and which you do it is every once in a while.  So yeah, no biggie.

If I were to give other examples, links to other sites is usually frowned upon, unless referencing copyrighted material that you don't own, then posting a link is the correct course of action.

If someone asks what is the best color of doohickey xyz and the response is check out my thingamajig abc instead, well, what part of "what is the best color" is that answering?

It's cool to sell in the classified, as long as it's not overdone.  You guys don't want to overdo it anyways, as you'll do more harm to your own sales than otherwise.  If I think back to some of the more successful garage ventures here, it hasn't been those that toot their own horn.  It has been those that have offered up a solid product and others toot their horn for them.

If my fishing reports are part of the issue then I'd ask how they're different than they've ever been.  Yes, I posted a link to my dysfunctional blog, and I thanked a friend/mod for pointing out that other members have been criticized for it in the past and then I promptly changed it.  I also refer to how I'm a guide in the process of giving my report.  There's usually lots to read in my reports, it's all true, I come from the heart, and if people don't want to read it they don't.

I don't plan to change a thing other than not posting a link to a blog.  If I'm out of line then please say so in this open forum, and I'll cease posting.

Maybe you mods/admins can PM the offending parties and let them know so the non-offending parties can stop wondering if their actions are offensive?

Dunno...I just like posting and looking at pics and vids of fish being killed.

And I might add, a half dozen people have already PM'd me asking if it was them, in addition to the 3-4 that asked questions here.  So I guess at least some peeps with some amount of commercial interest are at least thinking about this now.  But if you are still wondering, feel free to PM me.

Fair enough...but then you're assuming that the "offenders" will read this thread, realize you are talking to them, and change their behavior....

While at the same time you are making people like VK and AbKing question if their actions and participation are "offensive" or not....which you've since clarified they are not....

Up to you guys, but I bet 95% (at least) of folks who are active members of this community would prefer to be told to knock off a behavior/action rather than an ambiguous thread leaving them unsure if their actions are offensive enough to have people complain about them....

Just my 2 cents.

I don't see the problem.  I'm not going to chase anyone down, at the same time those that are wondering are asking, and judging by the number of inquiries, the message is being heard.  Again, this isn't about singling anyone out.  And for the most part here at NCKA, group conscious rules at the end of the day.  Enough of the group has heard, and in the end I have no reason to believe that the right thing won't be done.

Of course now I have to figure out what to do about you posting a picture of a naked dude with an undersized ab.

can I still sell my stuff that I shed every so often

old bike-fishing-kayak misc --like my c-list links with an ncka price cut from the standard c-list ad?

and can I still link random kayak deals i see ,or, friends ads linked that are selling stuff?

is this cool or would admin prefer to not have this?

i saw it done so did a few threads -but felt weird ,like maybe being self serving

thanks -sorry if its off topic some

You're all good, bro.

I think simply putting up links to your C-list stuff would be frowned upon.

Taking the time to post the description and pictures of what you are offering here along with the CL ad is welcomed and appreciated.

First off, how do you know that I didn't send a message?  You don't.

Second, that 95% is just plain wrong.  Having sent a number of such PM's over the years, I'd guess that 2/3 are appreciative and the other 1/3 is argumentative and defensive.

Because where do you draw the line?

You know, every year we (admins) discuss what the commercial policy should be here.  And every year we come to the conclusion that it more or less just works as is, so no firm policy is needed.  Every now and then we have to send out a reminder not to overdo it, and we're fine with that.  Things more or less just work as is in this community.   :3some:
