I have been using my old Ugly Stick and Penn for years. After looking at the Trevala posts I think I am going to try one of those with an Avet reel (more on the Avet later).
After looking at the many different rods I figured I would ask you guys what you use. From what I have read it is the TVC70ML 7 foot ML Medium Fast 20-50 pound. I think I would prefer a 6'ish pole so I was thinking of the TV66M which is a 6'6" M Medium Fast 30-65 pound. The jigs I usually use seem better suited to the Medium pole.
I usually use 6 ounce jig heads for lingcod because of swell/current so I was just wondering if the lighter pole would handle the 6 ounce jigs. Any first hand experience would be appreciated. I have never fished with tackle that light before going after lings and rockfish, it looks like fun. I went to Dicks to see if they had any Trevala rods, they did and I was impressed.
I have also never used a two piece pole for kayak fishing. Has anyone had any problems using a two piece? Might be better for stowing during rough launches and landings.

I have the 2 piece trevala that I love no problems at all. Brings in the Big lings great!

I usually try to get a one piece 8ft rod, the reason is simple. I want to be able to control the fish all around the yak if the fish decides to circle around. The one piece seems easier for me, for some reason I have a tendency to pitch apart a two piece rod.

I use the TVC70ML with Truth SG (pretty similar to the avet) spooled with 50lb braid. It’s incredibly light and strong. Perfect for long day on the kayak. Pull the trigger you won’t regret it.

My favorite travaila is the "S" (green) series in MH.
Much lighter and way more sensitive.
I pair that with either a curado or lexa 300.
Also,
Be cautious of the lighter actions in the travails series, the have a very slow action making it difficult to set the hook .... more suited to salmon fishing.

That's what I have. Seigler sgn and 30braid. How is the clicker for trolling? I have to just touch the drag lever up from freespool to get some tension unlike "bait" on the avet.

I was looking at the "S" model. It is $180 though, and the MH is rated at 50 to 80# test. I am thinking of using 30 or 40. I usually just target sand dabs up to lings. I may just go with the Medium?? Then I just saw the thread this morning on slow jig fishing...oh joy another pole! :smt002
I saw the Seigler, I'm still undecided, I would like to go American so I could help someone keep a job. I was looking at the Avet SX G2, a little more drag than the original. There are so many choices it is a bit confusing but this helped figure out what the differences are. The first 20 min explained the smaller models.

I've got the sxj 2speed, why 2 speed, trippin' I guess...the g2 seems the way to go but I would never need 20 lbs of drag. I barely need 10lbs...oh, love the avet by the way...

I use the same green series 6’3” MH casting. It has a longer butt section that gives more leverage under the arm pit. Yes lighter too. I matched it with a Revo Inshore

Trevala S are pretty dope I have rarely break mines out. Only use it when I’m on charters. The normal Trevala covers just about everything round here just fine on the kayak.

With 6oz jigs go with the medium heavy.

I’m sure everyone has a personal opinion as to what they like and normally use so I’ll throw in my thought too just to muddy the water :smt044
I use the 66 medium trevala with an Okuma low profile line counter reel. 30 lb braid for line with a 25lb mono leader. 6-6 is long enough for me to work around the front of a revo 13 and not too long to get in the way.
I also use a 70 light trevala, but it is really lacking in the power department with heavier jigs and deeper water. I have found it to be a great trolling rod and downrigger rod though.
Works well for everything I’ve used it for locally. Salmon, rockfish, halibut, stripers. I usually fish 4oz jigs in 100 or less feet. 6 oz jigs some days, and 2oz jigs shallower.

Just another FYI,
The grey (F series) travala rods are a slower action than the green (S Series). You will find the green rods rated 30 to 80lb will set hooks much better and have much more power pulling ling's off the bottom. With the grey rods you may find it best to step up one action.

Well to keep things simple and on the lower price range I think I am going with the 6'6" Medium for now. That way I can check out light tackle gear. I have been looking at the Seiglar, they look nice. I may just go with a level wind but they remind me of those old Zebco's when I was a kid. At least I kind of have an idea of what pole I want.

The Shimano Trevala 2 piece rods does not break down in 2 even pieces. 1 piece is just the handle, with the other piece being the rest of the rod. So it does not stow much better than a 1 piece rod. I would stick with a 1 piece rod which stows easily enough on a kayak.
I love my 7' Trevala MLs. They are more than enough for any rockfish or lingcods. I also use them for halibut and salmon trolling, and the occasional thresher shark. The 7' length allows me to swing the line over the bow of my kayak if the fish runs under the kayak. Not sure if that is easily doable with a 6' rod, unless you got a short kayak or long arms.

This! I use that rod, too. A 6' or 6'-6" would be a bit too short for me. The 7' single is just right on my 14+' yak to be able to lead around to the other side if needed.

I have the 6’6” mh, one piece Trevala and I love it!! The mh is rated for 110 -240 gram lures (3.88 - 8.5 ounce lure). I grab this rod for rock cod/lings, tuna/yellowtail up to 50 lbs, and use this rod offshore in the Gulf of Mexico every year. I don’t just grab this rod for yak, it’s my main offshore rig. I run a tekota 600lc reel. I highly recommend this rod for jigging, flicking iron into schools of busting fish, or trolling it. Since it is designed as a jigging rod, that’s where it really shines - a big ol hex bar working the bottom for that monster ling.

I have a 13 foot Trident and have been using a 7 foot rod. I'm going to check out something a little shorter, my short trout rod can still make it around the bow if I really stretch. And probably going with the Medium since I use 4 and 6 ounce jig heads.
I really have to catch up to you guys. I have one trout rod, one kayak rod (soon to be two), one surf rod, one boat rod, and one mooching rod.
Looking forward to getting the new setup!

I fished the ML and caught rockies,salmon to oversize sturgeon on it. Works good under 4oz butterfly and swimbaits jigheads. For the heavy 6oz up I would do the MH, but why fish that heavy?

Current, if I didn't use 6 oz in some spots we go the 4 oz will drift, about 80 feet of water. Maybe the MH is the way to go, just trying to keep it light as possible.

What Mark said! If the drift is that strong, as I am in a paddle yak, I usually move to a more sheltered area, shallower or call it.
The ML is super fun to work with. I've used an MH a little but in the conditions I was in, liked the ML better. I have friends that only fish salt with broomsticks and they love them. All about what you prefer.

I ordered the MH so who knows if I will like it, I'm sure I will. That's the problem, I've been swinging around a broomstick for years so I don't know much about light setups.
I'm good to go and look forward to April 15th...
