One of my co-workers lives on the banks of the San Lorenzo and took a pic of this fish that has been splashing around in front of his house for the past few days. I think it is a steelhead but would like a little verification. He lives in Boulder Creek which I think is fairly high up the San Lorenzo.

Next question is can I go catch it?

Billy....I catch & release 'em above and below Stevens Creek. The Law is: stream fishing opens on the last Saturday of April (I believe). To catch 'em, use a yellow coach dog rooster tail on an ultra light rod loaded with 4# mono - replace the treble hook with a single siwash hook and pinch the barb. I strongly recommend catch and release when fishing for these natives. They're too pretty to keep.

Oh....and always fish them from down stream - coz they face up current and spook easily. I LOVE STREAM FISHING  :smt007

Oh yeah C&R all the way. You can't tell from the pic but he says it is pretty big. He says it sounds like a dog slashing around in the creek.

The San Lorenzo is a C&R only stream. And only open to fishing Sat, Sun and Wed. Also there is a flow restriction that the river has to be at a certain volume. You have to call a DFG number to find out if the flow restriction is lifted for the week you are going.

O yea, you also need a steelhead report card to fish it.

Thats cool, I won't go harass it. Do you think it is a steelhead though?

Sure looks like one with that big square tail.
Group IQ is inversely proportional to the size of the group.

A Steelhead always knows where he is going, but a Man seldom does.

From that photo I'd also say that's a steelhead.

Yeah... it looks like a nice steelie to me. I used to fish up that way with Stuie a few years ago before he tried to kill me at the gorge. Never went back... plus fishing that river is just tough. Not a lot of fish going up that system anymore... not like the old days.

Nice steelie pic, Bill. Steelhead are truly beautiful fish.

Now, where the heck was she when I was spending hours and hours flogging the river during steelhead season?!
This was a very tough year with such little rain. Not many fishable days. And the fish that did make it up through the gorge were stacked up in pools for the poachers and snaggers to unethically target.
It IS cool to see that they're still up there this late in the year, so maybe there was some successful spawning.

The steelhead season on the Central Coast runs from Dec 1 to March 7 each year. All of the coastal watersheds around here are strictly C+R with barbless hooks. Some are "artificials only" while other allow bait. And you can only fish on Wed, Sat, Sunday, legal holidays, opening, and closing day. Some of the rivers have low-flow closures in effect (the San Lorenzo doesn't have a low-flow restriction but IT SHOULD). Oh yeah, and you need to have a steelhead report card in your possession (filled out).

Here's to hoping we have a better season next winter!
Cheers!
