Title: 50+ Age Learn Kayaking Safety
Post by: eastonkayaker on December 13, 2013, 09:45:03 AM
Noticed this in local paper. I am over 50, many of my friends ask me how they can try kayaking/fishing, figured there are some older, distinguished fishermen out there looking at NCKA for options who prefer to start on nice calm water.

After you learn kayaking on Lake Chabot you could fish it, bass, trout and catfish.

Hi My name is Frankfishing a 62 year old Kayakoholic. It started the same way as most, Lake Chabot then I graduated to a larger area Lake Del Valle.
Still looking for an even bigger rush I hooked up with other Kayakers ( I don't call others Kayakoholics) one friend was the paddler formally known as Scallen. He took me to the hard stuff and I got hooked and descended into the madness of Kayakoholicism. The Bastard took me to the Bean where the Landlord resides.
I just can't quit on my own anymore so instead I paddle with others.
Welcome to the Madness and it's :smt004 very addicting.
You will know you are among us by our gang sign right hand in a fist with pinky finger pointing downward.

Understand about the the free part, but all kinds of people out there, some don't like to infringe on others time, some prefer to learn before they join a group for fishing, some prefer taking an organized class. Just another option for someone who hasn't figured how to take their first paddle.

So, this was Frank late 50's....Not 1960's-  Years old fifties.  gnarly spot cool as a cucumber.  Does ANYONE have a good copy of Frank on the CG Copter Hoist from his SECOND time out at BH??  I want a good copy.  Remember, with the propwash below him?

Seriously.  It's about fun mostly and adrenaline a bit, too.  Safety is lways 1st.  Taking classes or going out with a guide (ahem) is sometimes a good idea.  I use guides when I'm in a spot with which I am unacquainted sometimes even nowadays, and I have a good amount of experience (also an old guy)

Our oldest paddler at the shop is 87 and she paddles hard. I'm working on my certification to teach kayaking now. Taking a class is a great idea and would put your paddling and safety skills ahead of a lot of others.
