same thing happened to me once in a plastic tote.  now i try to be a little more careful with my batteries by keeping them in their own boxes.

I just had that happen to me coming back from Shelter Cove this year.  One of the metal poles for my trailer fell across the leads of the battery while in the storage compartment of the trailer on the windy road back.  Luckily it just killed my new 8aH battery and didn't burn my trailer to the ground.

I had an incident a few years ago maybe worth mentioning,  After a day on the salt, I unplugged my FF and stowed it to keep it clean and dry as I hauled gear to the truck, I usually took great care to keep the plug clean and dry too but this time I just let it hang til I got back from the truck, it landed in the yak cupholder that had an inch or so of salt water in it. 12v and salt water, just about ruined the plug in a matter of minutes,

Scary scenario. Now to figure out which Allen experienced it.

Well many people think Volts but It is the Amps that cause all that arching. I worked at a forklift dealership. A mechanic was working on a 36 volt fork lift. some how he gad grounded his hand while on the positive terminal. He almost blew a hole through his hand. So even a small voltage battery with a whole lot of amps can hurt you.

Bare hand won't do that in a DC atmosphere unless he touched a conductive (metal) object to ground.

Did you not miss the part where I said he grounded his hand. it was on the positive terminal. I saw the wound and we all thought what a stupid move. This guy may have done it on purpose as he was a little different. My point was it is AMPS that gets the fire and heat going. Amps is like pressure in the water pipe. To put it in layman's terms. You can't fight a fire with 100 gal per min if there is no pressure behind it.

The worst part was, I kept smelling that smell and KNEW I should recognize it.  I was overcome with the usual obsession for a post-kayak fishing burrito and nap, I guess.

After charging I always put one piece of electrical tape across both terminals and write the volt and amp hours remaining on it after testing.

When I use the battery I put the tape on the side of the battery. Then when I'm done using it I put the tape back around the terminals in two pieces.

This will prevent arcing and helps me remember the condition of each particular battery.
