I tried searching the forums, but didn’t come up with anything.  I’m new to kayak fishing and looking at options for clothing during the winter in NorCal.  I’ve done some steelhead fishing and have waders and a rain jacket (and insulation)

Does that sound like a reasonable setup for the kayak or unsafe due to waders taking on water?

Thanks for the help and I can’t wait to get out there

Wes

Thanks.  I read that thread, but was interested in additional opinions, experiences, etc.

Some people use waders and do not have any problem from taking on water. What I wear will change with conditions. Fishing Tahoe year round I wear my wetsuit. That is because of the water temps. Fishing in freezing weather might require a wetsuit or drysuit. In average winter conditions around the bay I usually just add layers under my rain suit so I stay warm.

PS: Do a search for waders in safety, general talk and gearing up and you will find several threads.

The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.  ~John Buchan

My go to outfit for local fresh cold water fishing are the Kokatat Tempest jacket and pants.  The jacket comes with latex wrist gaskets that keep water out.  The pants have socks to keep your feet dry. Mine are about 9 years, lots of stains but fully functional.
For saltwater I only wear my Kokatat Angler drysuit.  All take layering very well.

A paddling jacket works well over the Tempest Jacket on mild days or if temps aren't too low.

waders can be a death trap and can make it more difficult to self rescue.  :smt009

As a newbie, I just went thru the same dilemma.  Waders/drytop,  drypants/drytop,  full drysuit.  When a local store (Outdoor Emporium, Seattle) had a 20% off  sale on the Kokatat SuperNova Hydrus Angler Drysuit ($545),  I purchased the suit.  I plan on fishing the salt year-round,  and in my area the water is always killer-cold.

There are some good sales at Outdoorplay.  They are selling a Stohlquist,  Amp Drysuit for $472.  Looks like some good deals.

Depending on the conditions you can dress like you are going skiing with waders and a tight belt over it. Paddle jacket of course.

I have plenty of ski experience, but that looks cold
