Well this just sucks...I was peddling out about a mile offshore yesterday and my Mirage 180 drive stops working. I popped it out and noticed that the sprocket has no teeth, the area where the chain assembly drives the fins. Also disappointed to see that the sprocket is made out of plastic rather than stainless steel. What was Hobie thinking here?

Has anyone ever had this problem or know how to fix it?

That's a bummer. How long did it take you to paddle back in?

I was also worried about that when it broke on me. It was going to be a struggle using my arms (peddle drive spoiled here) to paddle back in, so went into Macgyver mode. I cut off a piece of cloth strap and stuck it in between the sprocket and chain to create enough tension for the chain to grab onto something. Luckily it worked, and even more luckily this happened after salmon season ended  :smt002

I did have a paddle but it was going to be much harder against the wind. I ended using a combination of peddling and paddling  :smt001

Guess there's a reason not to upgrade to a 180 drive.

What a ridiculous design. I mean how much weight do you think they saved versus having this problem.  :smt013

I just recently purchased a 2018 that has the 180 drive. I noticed the plastic sprocket right off the bat.

Will keep an even closer eye on it after this post.

Seriously...I don't get it. The GT drive used a stainless steel sprocket, so why not the 180?  :smt012 What's even more frustrating is that the entire spine assembly would have to be replaced to fix this which is like $290. Hope Hobie is listening...

Btw, the hobie forum recommends preventing pebbles/sand from getting near the sprocket or have your chain too tight.

The GT drive is plastic too.  I have replaced several sprockets, but mainly due to the mast breaking almost flush where it screws in.

I have never seen the 180 drive up close and personal and would not have thought the sprocket would be a weak point. But from the picture, it does look less beefy in the sprocket area, compared to my GT drive, or is that not the case?

The mirage drives consistently leave me unimpressed with Hobie's engineering. Lots of plastic parts that regularly wear out and abruptly break, usually somewhere offshore. I have a kit of spare chains, cables, pulleys, etc that I keep in the boat. Annoying but necessary.
May the fish be mighty and the seas be meek...
