Hey all,
I am looking to hook up-literally on Friday for some rockfish fishing :smt003
Let me know where you are going or if you want to plan something in the Santa Cruz-Monterey area?

I decided to get one of my last days in this season and went to MBK, water was surface was perfect, light wind and swell, no one out, but immediately noticed as I was launching that the Red Tide was the worst I have ever seen it in my 30+ years on the water. Nasty red thick stuff with less than a foot of visability. Hooked about 10 fish, kept a 12" gopher and two sandabs, released upwards of 6 RF all under 10". My lady hooked a Canary and a couple of small RF too. We worked the usually "loop" from launch to the red buoy, then towards the hotel and yellow can, then all the way back out to the yellow buoy and on to the Red Channel buoy, over to the Cannary Row kelp bed, and then back to MBK-I gave it my best shot. I ran into and met Bkayaking and said hello, he was not having the best of luck that day either. It was a great day to be on the water and paddle, hopefully the water will clean up with the swell that is in and the storm that is approaching this weekend.  Cheers Mike

Places to Launch and Camp / Lawson's Landing? Loking for feedback
« on: October 06, 2007, 10:35:36 PM »
I read some good info on this place and sounds good for camping, launching and fishing; sounds like there is even crabbing and clamming available? Any information would be appreciated.

General Fishing Tips / Fishing for Ling Cods in Mendocino
« on: August 09, 2007, 07:01:24 PM »
I will be going back to Mendocino soon and have fished the area for a couple of years now. In the past I have done pretty good with catching RF up there, but have not been so lucky with Mr.ling. I did catch a my first ling this year at the HMB derby on a shrimp fly with squid, but would like to utilize some of the many lures I have in my arsenal. Any suggestions on lures and tactics would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Mike

« on: August 05, 2007, 12:19:35 PM »
Going to go out at MBK on Friday 8/10 and plan to get there by 6:00am to beat the wind. I would also be just as interested to launch the Otter Cove-Coral Street area around the corner if anyone wants to go there instead. LMK if your interested in hooking up.

I won't be able to hit the water until later in the morning, but would like to meet up with anyone who will be fishing the areas. Solsrf1

We launched early to do a pre-derby recon of the MBK area. The conditions were perfect with glassy conditions, fog, and the slightest off shore breeze. I felt sure that my Hali-Mojo was ever-present and that we would both be rewarded with a nice butt. I did have a few nibbles, but it was not meant to be. We both did manage to almost limit out on sandabs and were into some pretty good rockies for a while. Frank caught the biggin of day- a nice fatty red. We both ended the day with a full bag of fish and a great day on the water. Reports from the staff at MBK: a kayaker recently landed a 38# halibut straight out in about 50-70' of water :worship

Met up with Alien and Big J. for a great day of weather and fishing. We were just outside the kelp beds of Capitola and Pleasure Point (live Oak) which is an area just west of the Capitola pier or between the S.C. harbor and the Cap. pier. I talked to a yak fisherman who is out there almost everyday named Rod and he reports landing several halibut and recently a 14# WSB, with many of these fish schooling in the 40# range all around the kelp. He reports that they are very finicky and are hitting on live bait that is plentiful out there. He reported and I witnessed no less the 15-20 harbor seals attacking a bait ball just inside the pier area 20 yards off the beach, which he collected anchovies in the 7" range. I met Alien and Janice and had only dropped for about a minute when my rod when off and I thought maybe I had a ling due to liveliness of action, but low and behold another semi-hog but circling under my boat. I don't know what it is with my 2-hook shrimpfly rigs and whole squid, but I had never caught a halibut on a halibut rig to date? I think I'll just stick with what is working for me for now. No luck other than some strikes and nibbles from my flat friends down there, but they are there and in about 40-50' of water just off the kelp beds. Later on when I was weighing my butt on the pier, I saw his brother a nice 21# in the cooler there with talk of more out there......Many thanks to Alien and Big J for some great company and Alex's sleigh ride ala Mr. harbor seal breaching off his bow-way to fight that little thief Alien. I am planning on fishing Bean on Friday 7/27. The long range forecast has the SW and NW swell on the decline and should present some fairly calm water out there. Am also open to venturing to other spots from Carmel north to Bean to fish if you are putting together any trips on this day. Mike

134
Anyone interested in meeting me at Bean to hunt some fish; I have not launched or fished this area before, but am confident that I would not be a liability to anyone willing to partner up for some great fishing. Solsrf1/Mike

General Fishing Tips / Opinions on drift chute application
« on: July 16, 2007, 01:43:06 PM »
Ok, so I have heard from many in our area that they tend to shy away from using a drift chute due to the "whitie" factor, that they attract Mr.W's attention. I have heard that in Nor Cal this happens, and I would like to hear from anyone who knows this for a fact or has had personal experience of this happening. I have considered adding one of these into my gear to help with the drift factor on windy days, but do not want the unwelcome visit from as they say in Hawaii, "the landlord"....    Mike
