See any bears on Taylor Creek chasing the salmon yet?  We're going camping up there in 2 weeks.  Hadn't planned on it, but maybe now I'll bring the yak.  Thanks for the report.

Yep, I'd say start at Sand Harbor and head South. Less access to the coast as you head that way so you'll have less people. If it's warm out and you reach Secret Cove, you'll see plenty of wrinkled old balls.  It's a nude beach.  My buddy and I were kayaking by there and a boat was on anchor - I was looking the other way, but my buddy said 'hey whats that?!'.  I look up and a naked old dude is bent over at the waist on the boat - ass facing us.  Gross.  Haha   :smt044

I have the Elite 4 Chirp with GPS... I've had it around 2 years, but just this past weekend started having issues with it.  It would turn on and none of the buttons were working.  I would unplug from the battery and plug back in and it would work for a bit then shut off.  I'm gonna clean all the plugs better and check my connections, but up to this point I've liked it on the kayak.   If I can't get it working right, I'll probably just get another of the same since I liked it.  I would get one with a gps.  It's been handy to mark structure, fish, crab traps and helped when at Albion one time when the fog rolled in thick and we couldn't see the coast anymore.  my 2 cents.  :-)

Recipes / Re: question about bodega bay crabs
« on: December 11, 2017, 03:40:18 PM »
I don't have a ton of experience, but when we boiled crab, we didn't care for it as much.  A few weeks ago we got some dungies and a couple red rocks at Bodega.  We steamed the fresh crab for around 12 minutes.  I had added some crab boil and salt to the water.  I was much happier with it steamed and thought it tasted like we had gone to somewhere like Red Lobster.  We cooked the red rock in the same pot as the dungeness and I personally thought they tasted pretty similar.  I just thought it was more of a pain for getting the meat out of anything else besides the large front claws.

When you say store bought - are you talking about the frozen whole dungeness from somewhere like costco?

My buddy and I will be camping at TC Friday night and heading out in the morning closer to first light.  I'd be happy with your 'bit of a drive' - I'm driving out from Reno.  :smt003   We were gonna drop a crab trap and be on to fishing.  My buddy has only been out a couple times and beginning to catch the fishing bug.  I'll have a radio on 69.  We're in a blue hobie and a red wilderness yak.  You're welcome to join.  :smt001

I've had the butter before and liked it, but I can live without it.  I'm usually driving back to Reno after, so that's easiest for me to clean and put on ice.   :smt001

I was looking at the various ways of cleaning live crabs and ran across this guys video.  Ridiculously quick and easy.  We just do this same thing using the front corner of the yak as soon as we get back to the beach and throw em on ice.

Nice Meeting you too Jeff  :smt001  Looks like you did way better than us. Nice thresher!  We gave up on the salmon and caught a small ling and a few rockfish.  We did have an awesome encounter with a couple whales though.  We were jealous of your AI.  You covered a ridiculous amount of water out there.

I like to sluice/ pan mainly the American River.  Looks cool, but I'd probably prefer to just sluice instead.  I've got one of these which make's it easy to go on far hikes up the river.  http://www.cabelas.com/product/Angus-MacKirk-Gold-Trap-Sluice-Boxes/1344834.uts?Ntk=AllProducts&searchPath=%2Fcatalog%2Fsearch.cmd%3Fform_state%3DsearchForm%26N%3D0%26fsch%3Dtrue%26Ntk%3DAllProducts%26Ntt%3Dsluice%26x%3D0%26y%3D0%26WTz_l%3DHeader%253BSearch-All%2BProducts&Ntt=sluice&WTz_l=Header%3BSearch-All+Products

Gearing Up and Rigging Up / Re: Elite 4 HDI Mounting on Revolution 13
« on: January 26, 2015, 05:21:38 PM »
I'm getting ready to do an install on my revo 11 and ran across this guys very detailed install of his Elite 4 HDI.  http://dizzybigfish.co.uk/hobie-revolution-kayak-fishfinder-mount/  Maybe it'll give you some ideas on your 13.  I'm going to do the same as him but I'll be moving it up just slightly so I can still throw my leg over the side easily.  I thought his battery bag was a great idea too.  Hope it helps.

No state income tax in Washington.  San Juans are really nice up there.  .....If you can put up with long periods of grey wet weather in the winter.

Living in Reno, the mountains are great but sure wish the ocean were a lot closer again.

Fifty years ago, Jim Whittaker became the first American to summit Mt. Everest.  This is a short 3 minute video that I find motivating and keep going back to on days when I feel like just laying around on the couch.  Helps me to get up and do something outdoors.  :smt001 Figured some of you might enjoy too.

Sure give's me even more motivation to want to get into spearfishing.
